Montpellier:

FC Twente:

Montpellier  0 vs 1 Twente
                      (Castaignos)

This game starts out by both teams testing each other out and in turn is very even. By closing down Pirlo and not allowing him to get on the ball, Twente manage to pile on the pressure and they get a goal through Castaignos. Also the 3 central defenders managing Remy make it difficult for him to get into the game. In the second half Montpellier manage to get at Twente a bit in the wide areas but they don’t manage to get the equaliser that they need.

Miky’s Note: It was difficult to choose a winner in this game with both sides setting up in very solid ways. I just feel that Hero managed to bring Remy and Pirlo out of the game which to me are 2 of the key players for Montpellier.

Palmero:

Bordeaux:

Palmero  2 vs 0 Bordeaux
(Hernandez x2)

The 4-3-3 Palmero wider system seems to work well from the off and they have a lot of joy out in the wide areas of the pitch. The full backs supporting the wingers allows for Markovic to ping a cross into the box for Hernandez to finish it low into the bottom corner to take the lead. Only a few minutes after being exposed in the wide areas, Bordeaux get caught out by the pace of Hernandez who slots home another.

Miky’s Note:  2 good sides that have an entertaining match however I just feel that with Palmero sticking to the 4-3-3 from last week they will be able to take advantage of the pace and width of the pitch and with Hernandez poaching in the middle this is always going to be dangerous. Bordeaux go for the more aggressive approach which is interesting but I can only see Palmero winning this.

Genk:

PAOK:

Genk  1 vs 0 PAOK
(Depay)

Genk pile the pressure on from the start with PAOK sitting back and waiting to pounce on the counter attack. PAOK manage to give Genk a few scares on the counter attack but overall it is a pretty one sided match. PAOK hold Genk off until the 80th minute where Depay and Klose play a beautiful  1-2 beyond the tiring PAOK defensive line for Depay to slot it away into the bottom corner.

Miky’s Note:  Olly had the right idea I feel against arguably the best team in the league at the moment however I feel that after soaking up so much pressure for quite a long period of time, space will be shown and this is where Genk managed to break through and score. I like the classic 4-2-2 formation from Trebs and it gives an awesome balance to the team.

Verona:

Basel:

Verona  1 vs 0 Basel
(Barkley)

Verona play quick fast paced direct football which suits the players that they have which causes Basel problems from the start. Basel get some chances by trying to freeze Barkley out of the game but he manages to lose his markers and take a shot from the edge of the box which curls nicely into the top corner and turns out to be the winner in this game.

Miky’s Note: The quick paced set up from Verona suits the team very well I feel and in turn is able to win them the game. I think tactically GSC got this right and should use this system more often. Basel had a nice plan and tactical setup and it worked for the majority of the game until one moment of magic from Barkley made the difference.

Granada:

Getafe:

Granada 2 vs 1 Getafe
(Zivkovic, Veltman)    (Di Natale)

Both teams set up confidently with winning in mind, Getafe get at Granada early as planned and pin them back and in that period of pressure they manage to get a goal through Di Natale. Granada being the home team step it up in the second half and start putting huge pressure on Getafe and they get an equaliser through Zivkovic. Late on in the game at 1-1 Granada get a corner in the 89th minute and Veltman jumps the highest to head in a corner.

Miky’s Note:  I liked the attacking styles produced by both teams and I really wanted to give Viva a Draw or even a win because his tactics were brilliant, credit to Marky for covering for Afro brilliantly too and managing to pick up a win in his absence. I feel that Viva’s set up with 3 at the back could get exposed in the wide areas.
