Palermo vs Verona
(Valencia, Markovic) (Wickham)
Azzy’s view:
Two excellent teams on display. I felt that Palermo had the stronger line-up, with the two DMs a good combination and the front four causing Verona lots of problems. On the other side, Verona also had two good DMs and the strikers caused the CBs issues. The key area for me was that Palermo front four, who tested the aged back line of Verona with their pace and saw a MOTM performance from Enner Valencia, whose movement and running was outstanding. Verona’s goal was well worked, Sterling playing a long ball up to Toni, who fed Wickham slipping in between the CBs. All in all, two excellent sides but I felt that Palermo had that extra quality and the slight edge in tactical instructions.
PAOK vs Bremen
(Hunt)
Azzy’s view:
A very close game here, I felt that PAOK’s tactics were not particularly elaborate or thought-out and it allowed Bremen into the game more. Bremen had a clear game plan and PAOK’s more attacking stance assisted that, with Vilhena pulling the strings and Buffel and Beister having a strong influence on the game. Overall, Bremen had similar quality to PAOK but were more dynamic, picking up a deserved win.
Granada vs Genk
(Streller x2) (Depay, Klose)
Azzy’s view:
This was the game of the week, Genk with such great quality all over the pitch and Granada with the tactical setup to combat it. Genk took advantage of Granada’s weakness at FB, but that in turn opened up the game for Brahimi and Januzaj, who did as instructed and placed crosses for Streller to bag himself a brace. Had Granada not been able to call upon the Dutch CB pairing of Veltman and Vlaar, this could have been a straightforward win for Genk – but their resoluteness, and the sparkling performance from the Granada wingers, allowed them to sneak a draw.
Bordeaux vs Getafe
(Arias) (Totti, Kalou)
Azzy’s view:
Two great sets of tactics, Getafe throwing a surprise with the 3-4-1-2 which allowed them to stifle the two Bordeaux forwards and also combat the Bordeaux midfield fudge-fest. Getafe’s usage of Totti in the hole was inspired, as that was where the game was won and with the strikers occupying the CBs, Totti was afforded time and space. Bordeaux have the tools to win plenty of matches, as Arias and Maxwell were lights out in this game, but Getafe’s astute formation gave them the advantage in this game.
Twente vs Basel
(Quintero, Castaignos)
Azzy’s view:
When a team doesn’t show up, they get beaten. Well done to Hero for submitting tactics on time. As for Cherries, I guess the 4-0 win at the weekend is still fresh in his mind as he roves the streets of Bournemouth with Tennants Super at the ready.
- Palermo:
- Ujkani
Beck - Kongolo - Andelkovic - Pasqual
Schneiderlin - Barreto
Markovic - Canales - Perisic
Valencia
Overall
We're going to a more sturdy and defensive system today, and we'll have both the deep CMs mopping up in front of the centre backs. We want to hold a rigid formation when defending and then rely on bursts of pace and skill from our front four when we're attacking.
Defence
The back four are holding a tight line and the two CMs in front are patrolling the area and minimising gaps for deep lying forwards or attacking midfielders to pick us apart.
The full backs can get up the field to provide deep width for attacks, but they're not to go into the final third. If Valencia is on the shoulders then angled balls over the top are welcomed to release him behind.
Attack
The trio behind the striker are our main creative threats and they'll be a bit more fluid today in being able to interchange positions and break forward. They will all seek space but when they have the ball it's going to be high tempo attacking with an eye on getting in behind the defence with interplay and releasing the pacy Valencia.
If the defence is showing us up the wings then we're happy to whip the ball in, and intelligent positioning on the edge of the box may yield chances if they head it away.
- Verona:
- Howard
Janmaat-Demichelis-Distin-Van Aanholt
Sterling---Delph-Hallfredsson---Jese
Wickham—Toni
Tactics:
We're going to sacrifice the extra man in midfield for a striker to test out the oppositions CBs. Going to go direct this week, genuine route one, look to hit Toni so he can flick it on. Wingers and CMs need to maintain a high work rate for this to work and FBs generally more defensive than usual.
Attacking:
Look to hit long to Toni, he can flick it onto Wickham who should look to run in behind or down to a winger/CM from deeper. Both CMs box to box roles so 1 should look to get forward to support the attack. Wingers should look to run at the FBs at every opportunity. More reserved FBs but 1 should look to provide an overlap if possible per attack.
Defending:
Delph and Hallfredsson sit deeper and provide cover from midfield while wingers track back and cover the FBs. Demichilis and Distin to crowd out the striker(s). Numbers will be key for us, need good communication to prevent players from being isolated 1 on 1. Be patient if they want to maintain possession, don't dive in, let them overplay it.

PAOK vs Bremen
- PAOK:
- Injuries: Ergys Kace, Michael Gspurning, John Stones
Starting XI:
GK - David Ospina
RB - Miguel Vitor
CB - Karim Rekik
CB - Rafa Marquez
LB - Lino
DM - Emre Can
DM - Konstantinos Katsouranis
RM/RW - Sotiris Ninis
AM - Jorge Valdivia
LM/LW - Miroslav Stoch
ST - Alfred Finnbogason
------------------------------Ospina----------------------------------------------
Vitor----------------Rekik------------------------------Marquez--------------Lino
-----------------------Can------------------Katsouranis----------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ninis----------------------------------Valdivia-----------------------------------------Stoch
-------------------------------------Finnbogason------------------------------------------------
Tactics
Overall: Usually we like to be solid at the back but today I want us to be more attacking, Can play the more advanced of the midfield two with Katsouranis sitting allowing the FB's to get forward. Look to get Finnbogason the ball in the area, so he can do what he does best. Attack with pace, one/two touch football, don't dither in possession
Defence: Vitor/Lino be advanced but in defence be solid and narrow. Keep them ahead of us, don't let them in behind, so sit a little deeper.
Attack: Will be based off the counter attack mainly, look to spring through Stoch/Ninis. When we have possession look to get Valdivia on the ball to create. Three behind Finnbogason interchanges throughout.
- Bremen:
- Injuries: Jefferson Montero, Ludovic Obraniak, Melvyn Lorenzen
------------Wolf--------------
Selassie-Prodl-Badstuber-Alonso
Buffel-----Vilhena-------Beister
------Hunt-------Ekici---------
----------Petersen------------
We are playing a 4-5-1 this week with Vilhena in a central midfield role which will join the attacks and i want us to attack from the start using this setup. I want us to unsettle PAOK early and pile on the pressure.
Defensive Instructions: I want us to just sit as a back 4 with the full backs supporting the attacks at times. Stand your ground and look to disposes the opponent as quickly as possible. Make the opponent work for the attacks and make sure you stay as a block of 4 as much as you can. The midfield will help in defence as in defensive situations Ekici will drop into a block of 4 with Vilhena to provide extra protection.
Attacking Instructions: I want us to go out there and win this game this week, we are more than capable of winning this game and this formation should work well for us with Vilhena playing a central role in which he will join in on the attacks and look to slide the ball into the more advanced players. I want us to use the ball cleverly and make the build up's count. Look for the Petersen's runs into the box and look for his movement that he will be making inside the box. Ekici and Hunt you will both look to get at the opposition and use the whole pitch to your advantage. Beister and Buffel look to get down the wings at the full backs and cause problems for the opposition.
Kroos on for Ekici in the 80th minute and then Kroos will drop into a more defensive role alongside Vilhena.
Makiadi on for Vilhena in the 90th Minute.
Di Santo on for Petersen on the 90th Minute.

Granada vs Genk
- Granada:
- Injuries: Ben Davies, Dmitri Foulquier, Richairo ZivkovicBuffon
Nyom---Veltman---Vlaar----Lago
Marrone----Xavi
Brahimi------Klaassen------Januzaj
Streller
Subs: Fernandez, Fabinho, Murillo, Angulo, Recio, Ongena
General: Direct attacking football, with plenty of movement and quick passing.
Attacking Tactics:
Quick, pacey pass and move, not giving opposition time to settle. Streller is focal point, holding up the ball and allowing the midfield up to support. When the ball comes into the box, get on the end of them. Klaassen look to play off Streller. Look for knockdowns and flick ons. Xavi as playmaker, dictating our play. Full backs getting forward and overlapping the widemen. Wide players looking to cross from wide, aiming for Streller.
Defensive Tactics:
Back four to stay back. Xavi and Marrone to sit in front and protect, Brahimi and Januzaj to support FBs when we are defending. Pressing from the front to ease work load on midfield and defence.
Subs:
Winning on 80, Recio on, Klassen off 4-3-2-1
Losing on 80 minutes, Nyom and Lago off, Murillo and Ongeni on, go 3-2-3-2
- Genk:
- Abbiatti
Aurier van Buyten Barzagli Shaw
Gutierrez Diaz Aranguiz
Elia Klose Depay
BENCH: Spahic, Burn, Ngconga, Quaresma, Kumordzi, Riviere, Kane
TACTICS
This is the most important game of the season. We will look to go out and win, by not allowing them settle in possession with a high energy midfield, not letting them have any time on the ball with constant pressure. The back four will hold a line a little deeper than usual to counter their pace and not let them use it. When we have the ball, focus on attacking down the wings and go at their weak full backs. Our full backs have license to get forward with Diaz covering, and look to cut inside from the wings. Klose should sneak around the box and pounce on any oppotunities, and Gutierrez and Aranguiz should loiter around the edge of the box looking to take long shots or make late runs in. Riviere and Quaresma are options to come on off the bench to change things up if losing.

Bordeaux vs Getafe
- Bordeaux:
- --------------Carrasso
Arias -- Henrique -- Umtiti -- Maxwell
--------------Alonso
--------Besic -----Cheyrou
------------Rosicky
--------Sanogo - Pelle
Subs: Olimpa,Mariano,Orban,Belay,Vidal,Drogba,Bellion
Team Talk
Viva's side are fairly injury hit with Berba & Rolfes out so we're going to look exploit the centre of midfield today and dominate before getting the full backs forward once imposed to get balls in the box.
Defensive
- Umtiti to pick up Di Natale and keep close to him with his pace and don't give him half a yard to shoot, Henrique to stick to Kalou and look to bully him physically off the ball if plays up top.
- Arias/Maxwell to force the wingers down the line and make them cross it.
- Besic & Cheyrou to go out and help the full backs against overlapping if go down the wing, If not then Besic to get amongst the midfield and Cheyrou to cut the supply out to the forwards.
- If the full backs go up the pitch then Besic/Cheyrou to fill in dependent on which side it's on
Attacking
- Full backs to get up the pitch if we're controlling midfield and whip balls in for the forwards
- Alonso to play from deep sitting between the CB's to dictate play getting the ball long up to Sanogo/Pelle. Cheyrou to give the short option and look to pick out full backs getting out wide
- Rosicky to drift in the space between DM/CB's look to pull out Terry or Naldo for Sanogo to move into. If get the ball in the hole look to slip it in behind the defense behind the slowing CB's
- Sanogo to get onto Naldo and look to turn him and get beyond him in behind with his aging legs.
- Pelle to sit just off Terry and look to make runs across Naldo to open to space up, Look to get across the front post for headers/Tap ins
Subs: Vidal for Rosicky - To use pace to run off the forwards
- Getafe:
- Formation: 3-4-1-2Codina
Naldo Terry Lopez
Maggio Tiago Ledesma Kurzawa
Totti
Di Natale Kalou
Subs: Alexis, Arroyo, Mosquera, Sammir, Leon
Injured Players: Berbatov, Lacen, Rolfes
Team Talk
Done by research and Nando has already conceded defeat in the league last week, I want to destroy his teams confidence even more by taking the front foot. Alonso is the new man and I'll be targeting him stopping his flow. Kalou is our new man and I want him to buzz around the pitch so they can't pick him up and opening space for us. We'll use width aswell as central for attacking.
DEFENSIVE TACTICS
If Drogba plays I want Terry to pick him up, Naldo and Lopez to cover for Terry or pick up any other attacker. WB to force the winger on his weaker foot and cross from deep where we have 3 CB. Tiago like real life put pressure on Alonso slowing down his rhythm. Ledesma to help jockey your man and follow your man. Kalou close down the CB forcing them to hit it long.
ATTACKING TACTICS
I want my WB to pin the opposition wide men back, Maggio to offer us constant balls into the box with his crossing and running the width. Kurzawa use the ball more efficiently linking up with players pass and move and varying his passes. Ledesma look to control the game play balls to our Wideman who will make runs off the fullbacks or centrally go deep if they try and pick you up. Tiago just keep it simple son with short snappy passes. Totti the Don play in hole demand ball and create something for us playing in strikers or having a shot yourself. Kalou use your speed to stretch the opposition defence playing on shoulder or going wide. Di Natale play as predator look for space always stay on the move.
(Arias) (Totti, Kalou)

Twente vs Basel
- Twente:
- ------------------------Stevens-----------------
---Rosales---Martins Indi----Rojo----Schilder--
---------------------Rabiot----Clasie-------------
Muric----------------Quintero------------Promes
------------------------Castaignos----------------
Reverting to a 4-2-3-1 this week against Basel with the focal point being on Quintero looking to exploit Cherries tactics to play zonal defending at the back whenever two are attacking. If Blind is instructed to follow the AM then it leaves our CM to outnumber and control the game. He instructs Lovren to man-mark the lone striker so Castaignos is to focus on the other CB and for Quintero to also push through the gap left whilst the two wingers play a wide game to keep the fullbacks contained.
Defence
Aduriz usually plays as their lone striker with instructions to get on crosses, therefore a pairing of two 6ft3in CBs should hold him at bay, FBs to keep their wide options on the outside, not to go to ground and force them into crosses only. Our wingers to track back and help if they're pushing up. Rabiot and Clasie to provide a 2nd wall in front of the defence.
Attack
Quintero given no defensive responsibilities, simple instructions to cause mayhem towards their defence and the space left through the confusion caused in their central partnership as Castaignos drags Lovren into the other centreback's zone.
Subs: 80m Gauld, Mokhtar and James on for Muric, Promes and Schilder. Straight swap with fresh legs for the last ten minutes to exploit the oppositions weariness as they don't make subs.
- Basel:
- YOLOSWAG
(Quintero, Castaignos)
