Team of the Millenium
With close to 15 years since the turn of the Millenium, what is the best team your club could put out from the players to play for you during that time?
What this has shown me is that Liverpool have had pretty shocking strength in depth over the years.
Reina
Finnan - Carragher - Hyypia - Riise
Alonso Mascherano
Gerrard
Suarez - Owen - Torres
Subs:
Dudek
Skrtel
Babbel
Hamann
Murphy
Benayoun
Kuyt

Always liked Finnan, a very good full back who while not fantastic attacking was very good defensively.

Some strange choices there hammersmith.
Irwin over evra? Dennis was 35 at the turn of the millennium (season wise) and had only 2 seasons with us then.
Yorke over rvn? Dwight had 2 season post millennium scoring 13 times - doesn't really compare to ruuds 150 goals.
Stam over vidic when he missed half of his only millennium season with us injured?

Re: Team of the Millenium
Well if we are ignoring what players actually did for us this millennium and just going by name we could include blanc and veron, after all they were great players at one point.
Forlan a double golden boot and golden ball winner. Pique got a full set of trophies for club and country etc etc.
Anyway my line up would be;
Vds
Neville rio vidic evra
Ronaldo keane scholes giggs
Rooney rvn
Special mention to Hargreaves and tevez (the swine) for contribution to 08 cl campaign.

Re: Team of the Millenium
Struggled between keane and carrick as Roy was superb from 98-01 and adapted his game to injury after that performing well until 04, hit his best form was around the millennium was definitely before it.
Harsh on carrick to be left out.

Surprised that Hazard is getting in these Chelsea teams ahead of Mata. I know it didn't end great for Mata at Chelsea but I think he played better for Chelsea than Hazard has done as well as being more successful considering the Champions League success.

I think I'd put Joe Cole ahead of Mata. Juan only had one good season. As good as he was in 11/12 a lot of it had to do with the older players and the defence. Was Ashley's last good season. Ramires and Ivanovic were non stop.

Re: Team of the Millenium
I really rated Helguera, injuries curtailed his career a fair bit but as a defender he was far superior to Ramos who wouldn't be regarded if a) he wasn't spanish and b) he didn't play for Real Madrid.

Maybe you're right mate, I was a little young at his romp, and I do like Ramos, who for me is a Tim Tebow-type player, not always the best technically, and sometimes comically inept, but he does have a habit of popping up on both ends of the field at precariously desperate moments. Sense of the occasion is very important.

Re: Team of the Millenium
Give it a couple of years KR and Varane will be in that team.
My Utd team
The back 5 picks itself - they went so many games without conceding a goal one season it was unreal. I'm not really one for sentiment but Giggs gets in because of who he is. Scholes and Keane are the best players in their positions in the PL era. Ronaldo & Rooney had a great partnership and I'd be tempted to put them up front together but RVN is my favourite player of all time so he has to get in. I was debating whether or not to put RVP in ahead of Rooney though.

I'm siding with kingraf for throwing in a Tim Tebow reference.

Giggs was only 27 at the turn of the millennium - are you really saying he did nothing in the 13 seasons he played post 2000 to merit being in a best Manchester United side?

Re: Team of the Millenium
have to have giggs in there, nonsense to say otherwise. apparently being top quality week in week out isnt standing out these days, while it was a bit of a sentimental pick and he probably wasn't THE player of the year in 08/09 he was certainly up there after being great throughout the whole season. its only after the likes of giggs and scholes have retired have we've seen how much we are missing them already, even when they werent "standing" out they were still miles better than anything we have in this current team.
anyway, i agree with most teams but perhaps one probably controversial difference. id have tevez over RVN. hear me out! ruud was a poacher, a brilliant one but a poacher none the less who needed it to be put on a plate for him. all the time ruud was there we were a pretty poor and predictable team. wasnt till ruud went that we improved. ruud could never have played with the likes of a ronaldo.
tevez meanwhile was a ultimate work horse who while not always shining his hard work created opportunities for other team mates as well as chipping in with some big goals. tevez was a main player in the 08 champions league winning teams as well as us winning titles, luckier than ruud in that he had a better team to play in but still gets in because he contributed to us winning trophies while ruud did not. think the 08 team is worse off with ruud in than tevez. the front 3 in 08 worked perfectly

I'd rather pick Park for those reasons than Tevez who wasn't a key player for us, it was all about Rooney, Ronaldo and the defence during that period, he had his moments but we would have won those titles without him.

Re: Team of the Millenium
you do realise that rooney only scored four more goals than tevez over those two years. people big up rooney because he's english. people undermine tevez as a player because he's a horrible little traitorous rat but rooney wasnt much better than tevez while he was there. remember saying the same thing at the time (until he moved to city that was!)
certainly wasn't all about rooney

Rooney's overall performances were far more important to our success than Tevez, he was the main creator of our play and did just as much donkey work as well, the main workhorse was of course Park anyway.

will have to agree to disagree, i feel rooneys remembered more fondly simply because what tevez did afterwards
wasnt just park who was the work horse, team was full of them which contributed us to us being a great side, hargreaves, park, rooney, tevez and even brown all worked there arses off which left ronnie to do what he does best

In fairness even Ronny worked his balls off during that two year period, often left up top on his own in the big games and did admirably.
We will have to agree to disagree, was never impressed by Tevez but with the side we had at the time it's easy to overlook certain players.

I'd have to agree with C & R, for all his ability as a goalscorer he added very little to the team beyond that and we were a far better team without him than we were with him.

He carried us to the pl title in 02/03.
Team was rank bad for a few years after that and post ankle injury he became a bit of a parody of himself.
One of the best strikers we ever had.

I think RvN is underrated by the majority. Cant remember who is was against were he ran with it from the halfway line, took it past a couple of players and cooly slotted it home. Not the goal of a poacher! Seems to be referred to as a poacher just because of his great finishing.

game was against fulham, wrecking my brains but cant think of too many more like it
read a stat somewhere that he only scored one outside the box for us, that fulham one was still inside the box when he finished

"It was in his last season at Old Trafford where he achieved the unthinkable. On the 19th November 2005, van Nistelrooy scored his one and only goal from outside the box. His only previous goal from past the 18 yard line was for PSV Eindhoven when he lobbed the ‘keeper from just-before the halfway line."
