Republic of Ireland thread
So this week sees the start of the euro qualifiers.
We start with an away game to Georgia.
Will be very tough for us to qualify.
If we can get 6 points, which will be the target from our first 2 games( Gibraltar h after Georgia). will be good.
Then we have world champions Germany a, can write them off as 2 defeats.
Scotland will be interesting to play, they have picked up a bit.
Poland will be tricky.
Hate to say it, but cant see us making it, but one thing is for sure we will give it a hell of a go.
Also with the great Irish support behind the boys, we may surprise a few.
So C'MON YOU BOYS IN GREEN.

Ireland were comfortably the worst team at the last Euro's.
I agree I don't think they'll make it.

It's way too tough a group for ROI.
They make England look like tournament challengers. International Football in the British Isles is in the toilet.

Re: Republic of Ireland thread
Well we will ceratinly be looking at taking wins over Georgia & Gibralter.
Looking for a win at home to Scotland and something away.
Poland will be tough, loss out there, maybe get a point at home.
Germany as I said is a write off, 2 defeats for us there.
Germany to walk the group.
Anyway its gonna be exciting, hope to get to a game or 2.
Hoping to see Grealish in a green shirt before the qualifications are over.

I'd agree Germany could put out anyone and still win group.
Poland most likely next favourites, Scotland third, Georgia and Ireland battling for 4th.
ROI have fallen so far in the last 6-7 years that they are now on the minnow level.

I would say Scotland/ROI/Georgia battling for 3rd.
Minnow level, really.
We're pretty bad, but I would like to think we are above the likes of Faroe Islands, San Marino, Gibralter, etc.
The Scotland/ROI games am hoping will be good games, looking forward to them the most.

Think they will be good games, but you'd have to fancy Scotland to do better. Scotland have improved in line with Ireland's regression. Strachan has done a great job with a small pool of "talent".
Both teams though have a habit of struggling against worse teams.

Great result. Nervy game, but one we needed to win.
McGeady, quality finish.
Good win and with Gibraltar to come to Lansdowne Rd next, we should be looking at 6 points from the first two games.
Great stuff

Goos start in what will be a tricky tie for anyone else in the group. Didn't watch the full match so can't comment on how we played but couldn't be any worse than what was served up in recent times.

Oh well the next set of qualifiers are here. We should have what it takes to beat the mighty Gibraltar at home. Then we go to Germany away. I will take a point from this game but think they may edge a victory. Good luck to Scotland and Wales as well and obviously goes without saying lets hope England and Northern Ireland both get a good beating J

Hoping we can get a decent score today.
Don't think we will put the 7 past them like Poland did.
A win is a must and to add to the goal tally.
If this happens, hoping the other 2 games are a draw, so we will be top after 2 games.
We may well be in foR a tough ride tuesday night.

Well 7-0.
Great stuff.
First off, yes it was Gibraltar. You can only beat whats in front of you though.
Top of the group going into what will probably be our toughest game of the qualifiers on tuesday.

Well, with Germany losing, they will be even more up for it tomorrow.
We need need to put in a hell of a performance to get something I feel.
Trickier now with the way Poland have started. If they beat Scotland, they will have 9 from 9.
Still a way to go yet though and they will drop points along the way.
Need Keano to keep banging the goals in.

Re: Republic of Ireland thread
Fkn great stuff.
Thought at 1-0 would lose.
Our never say die attitude again.
Wessi could/should have scored earlier.
Would have taken a point before.
Second in the group, 7 points from 9 is great.
Next up Scotland away, another tough game ahead.
We can enjoy this.
McGeady is quality.
Great play from Myler, filling on at right back.
Great spirt from Ireland.
Super John O'Shea.
Very happy tonight.

Re: Republic of Ireland thread
so let's have a think, is this new format really galvanising minor sides & platini & that bald gianni geezer were right all along. or has the new format just made the big teams complacent & they think they can lose three or four games & still qualify. it's been an pretty funny start to this campaign, results are all over the place. typical england get the easy group & miss out on any competitive action whatsover to really test us. congrats ROI on tonight.

Re: Republic of Ireland thread
I just don't think there are many top European sides atm, Holland can't defend, Italy scrapping along with their worst generation in decades, Germany have a lot of very very young players with a number of players missing, Spain still bedding in a number of new players but really could do with a change of coach i feel. But it's enjoyable anyway! Kind of feeling Gibraltar experiment has been pointless though. Played two home games and have scored zero goals, 17 conceded and three losses.

I feel Germany could put 10 past them.
Scotland will probably put 7 on them again.
Just a case for teams to rack up the goal difference.

Gibraltar had their league season held up which meant none of their players have played any football. They were never going to get any points in this group but this certainly hasn't helped.
By the way Gibraltar did beat Slovakia in a friendly, who then went on to beat Spain.......

Might have been answered ages ago on here but ... what's the point in Gibraltar having a team appart from annoying Spanish folks? I know its not worst than San Marino but where did it come from and will we be graced with exciting teams from IOM or CIs in the future? It's not like there isnt already not enough countries competing right now

also odd that Gibraltar aren't recognised by fifa so can't compete in fifa world cup qualifiers, but are somehow deemed recognised by Uefa...

Ah, fkn disappointing. Stupid free kick to give away which lead to the corner.
Great finish from Maloney(learnt that at Villa).
Well done Scotland, fair play.
Must say Marshall is one of the top keepers in Britain for me.
Poland home next. Must win.

So, Poland home sunday night.
Got to get the 3 points.
Going to be a tough game no doubt.
A loss and we will be 6 points behind them.
Would expext nothing less than wins for Scotland & Germany to.

Re: Republic of Ireland thread
Ireland all disjointed because either the team are carrying out the gameplan wrong, or O'Neil is selecting the wrong players.
Keane and Hoolahan both want the ball into feet in the middle - Ireland seem intent on knocking it into the channels and long. If you're gonna do that get Daryl Murphy on.
Needs sorting either way at half time
