Monfils goose is nearly cooked here...I fear for his chances if he doesn't win this set. Still, these humid conditions the past 4-5 days are brutal...

No way - 2 MPs.
Monfils wins! Terrible final game by Dimi though, never nice to see a double on match point either.

That FH miss at 15-30, 5-6 then DF to lose the match makes you wonder if Dimitrov is good enough to win a slam. But, well done Monfils.

La Monf!! An uber-choke from Dimitrov but Monfils did well and was clearly the better player throughout that match.

That was awful, must be a real setback. He'll get a right bollocking off Rashid.

Any Federer fans who have never seen Bautista-Agut play, be warned: he makes a horrendous noise about half a second after he hits the ball.

Simon has such excellent movement, covers the court very easily and efficiently. I wonder if he'll outlast the bigger Cilic in this humidity?

Re: US Open Day 9!
Monfils is such an enigma...insanely talented but often mentally AWOL. He has the potential to blow Federer off court...however, you have to favour Fed's consistency.
Dimitrov...don't know what to say...I know he's ranked 8 in the world but there is just that all elusive 'X factor' missing...and it's a crucial deficiency re: slams.
Have to say, loved watching the re-run of Fed vs 35yo Agassi in 2005 USO final the other night. The quality was better than anything I've seen this year...makes you nostalgic for the old days instead of Petchy keeping saying these days "that was the best shot EVER". Er, no it wasn't Petch, and you seem to have forgotten all those amazing matches from yesteryear you commentated on.
Silver, Simon isn't called "Marathon Man" by his fellow pro's for nothing! He's like a Kenyan runner on a tennis court...he never, ever, tires. Cilic will 'blink' first.

Re: US Open Day 9!
Yeah that 1995 was great, super quick and all out attack, even for a baseliner as Agassi, it was nuclear from both.
Dimi was flat tonight, made Monfils look so much better then he was.

So torn... I want Simon to beat Cilic, but I think Simon has a better chance of beating Wawrinka... Undecided.
Simon must also be the lankiest 5'11 ever.

Re: US Open Day 9!
Yeah, not an easy match for Fed by any stretch, despite the ranking gap. But he should still prevail over 5. Really surprised Monfils got it done in straights today, and two 7-5 sets can be a sign of mental wobbles from the opponent. Not good from Dimi.
That 2005 final was great! I was amazed that Agassi stayed with him as long as he did. As you say, high quality hitting.
kingraf, winner of this plays Berdych. So I would assume you want Simon to win, so he can lose to Berdych (who has the best chance at taking out Federer)?

Oh right, Stan beat Robredo yesterday. For whatever reason I had Stan vs Fed as the bottom half. In which case... meh, I just want Simon to win.

Lets not under estimate Monfils, the way he is playing at the moment its difficult for anybody to get past him.
Le Monf to win this in straight sets, he will win 6-4 in the 3rd, Dimi don't have any weapons to beat Monf.
But if Monfils is knackered after this match he'll be a write off.
La Monf is playing with lot of confidence and will be a serious threat in the next match who ever he faces and that includes the GOAT.

Re: US Open Day 9!
I picked Marin to do it in 5... Simon is such a mega pusher who I would pay to see drop the rankings doesn't deserve QF's playing like that, and he won't be!
Grigor is a heartless player, no big urgency/emotions like he had at Wimby. Congrats Gael I hope you play a good game in the QF

Marin's 3rd time in the QF at USO, he lost the other 2 in 4 sets but surely has a better chance of progress this time

Re: US Open Day 9!
Thiem had three break points in the first game, not a bad start for the biggest match of his life. Meanwhile, Federer looks sharp as he breaks B-A to go 2-1 up.

Some really good points in this match! I feel for Bautista, he's not even playing badly at all but he's 4-1 down.
Berdych deals out the breadstick, ouch.

Re: US Open Day 9!
2 in 2 on bp's that is clutch by Tomas. Dom's serve is far below the necessary level to keep up with him.. 1st set 6-1.
And double break Roger, can probably have a snack and find him set and break up

Pity about the wobble, it was looking very tidy by Federer but I think he joined in the idea it could be an exho. Hopefully he'll knuckle down again 2nd set.

I really don't think Thiem is as bad as this Silver.. I watched him destroy Lopez in the back of my mind I knew Tomas would play a blinder tonight He'll be top 20 by next summer I caught a few points in the first 4 games now Berd is just rolling him down

Re: US Open Day 9!
If it's Berdych v Fed it'll be an interesting contest. Can Berdych overpower Federer before he takes all the time away from Berdych?
Tough call, it'll be down to who's game can hold up enough to the pressure of the others, and pose the earliest problems.

Ok, we found out that Thiem beat Gulbis from 2 sets down so.. might have a slim chance for De ja vu

Thiem is future masters/slams winner, can't call him rubbish based only on tonight's schooling. Bautista has benefitted from the draws, but has a nice enough game for his rank.
