The pre fight hype
Simple one really, with the Bellew/Clev fight approaching with it being ppv there will be pre fright programmes like behind the ropes etc do these programmes persuade you to buy a ppv show or do they have no effect?

Re: The pre fight hype
If they do them for this fight it might help. I love the pre fight hype, it's all part of the event for me. I like the pre fight analysis, press conferences, special ringside episodes, behind the ropes.
A big fight starts way before the bell so it might sway me.

I find all of floyd's behind the scenes stuff in the build up to his fights pretty boring these days though

That's slightly different as he just repeats "all hard work and dedication makes Floyd a dull boy... Who likes to preach about it".

Funny thing is, Tyson arguably the most marketable boxer since Ali, never had ''All access 24/7, behind the ropes'' etc yet his fights were always massive. I guess because he backed up the hype in the ring. I can remember watching his fights back in the day and being very excited at the very anticipation of a Tyson fight.
I did not need to know how he lived 24/7.

Don't forget Boxing was much bigger in the 80s.............Hagler, Hearns, Duran, Leonard, Curry, Sanchez, Camacho, Holmes, Spinks........Don't forget also that kid dynamite was on ABC pretty much up until he won the title................People got to see the Frazier blow out and all the other devastation....
Jacobs also cannily marketed him as the saviour of the Heavy division which was in a malaise (Though infinitely better than now)..
Jacobs also got him plenty of magazine and TV spots too..........
Jimmy Jacobs did a wonderful job with Mike..
No 24/7 but plenty of exposure.........That SKY and Boxnation types sorely lack over here..

He didn't need it. Boxing was still a mainstream sport (as opposed to the fringe sport it's turned itself into). Plus Tyson was one of the most exciting fighters of all time.

24/7 Tyson would've been TV Gold. With a man as unpredictable and odd as Tyson it would have been boxings take on "This Is Spinal Tap" as far as an informative behind the scenes look at the sport goes.

Interesting point re not knowing how they lived 24/7. I think seeing how mundane these demi gods of pugilism really are outside the ring hurts them in the long run.

Boxing journalists have been making the point for decades that covering a boxer who is in training camp is about as mundane as you get. Same routine day in day out. Same questions repeated over and over. Same answers over and over.

I really enjoyed the 24/7 for Hatton - Mayweather but anything else I have seen is pretty mundane.

Re: The pre fight hype
I quite liked the build up for the last Fury v Chis fight before it got cancelled. Seeing Chis doing hills with his fitness coach I started to realise just how much of a different proposition he would be for Fury second time around.
Also quite like Froch stuff, ignoring the usual "warrior" and "trenches" stuff I find his pre fight preparation interesting.
I quite liked watching Alvarez for the Floyd fight but the feeling he portrayed was that the fight meant everything and he was going to win or die trying, that certainly never materialized.

Agreed with Jbw, too much exposure can be a bad thing. I used to look forward to Broner fights, now I'd prefer him to lose or retire.

Re: The pre fight hype
Agree with DuransHorse, I can see myself buying Clev-Bellew. I think it'll be a good fight, I want to see it. I'll resent paying for it but it isn't much and if I go to the pub I'd spend even more.
I love the build up, especially for a fight like this one. No interest in Floyd's 24/7 any more but Clev & Bellew should be entertaining.

I'll watch the ringside tonight, I hope they pace the build up well enough. A little niggle can be a good thing but wall to wall Bellew between now and Nov 22nd (or is it 29th?) will seriously put me off. Having said that, the only way I'm watching this is if they have it on down the local. Not paying for it myself.

Re: The pre fight hype
The Ringside episode before Froch v Groves 1 definitely swayed me into buying it. Groves did a brilliant job of selling a fight that, was perceived as a bit of a mismatch, as a real fight that had a bit of the unknown about it.
Before that episode the match up hadn't really done anything for me but it after it made me warm to Groves.
I watched the Clev v Bellew Ringside yesterday and even though it was entertaining it hasn't changed my mind about buying the PPV.
I think you need to be fighting at a certain level to sell a PPV. We didn't really know if Groves could compete at World level so Froch was basically selling the first fight until the Ringside episode but we know Clev and Bellew's level (seeing as they were both beaten well at light heavy) and that's taking into account their previous fight being entertaining.
I think on the day of the fight the PPV selling will come down to the people who prefer watching boxing on a Saturday night even if there's a cost to it. I'm sure there'll be a good buy rate when it means watching 5 or 6 fights over X factor or whatever else is on.
