The first millennium began with year 1 (1/1/0001). To cover 1000 years it thus had to include year 1000. Thus the 2nd millennium began with year 1001 (1/1/1001), the 3rd with year 2001 (1/1/2001).

Aah, I see the defense. I think. To be fair though, there wasn't a year one, or two, or three either. The modern calender, which is essentially "The year of our Lord" only started being tracked in 525 and as such is a retrospective dating system, which is about four years off in any case. From a literal perspective, Anna Domini should be about four years back, and thus the millennium, had it been counted correctly in fact started in 1996ish.

Wikipedia gives Jesus' dates as 7–2 BC to 30–33 AD, so he could have either been probably about 40 or 30 or inbetween. Also he was born in June.

Yes, the new year is a pagan date, IIRC. The modern calender is essentially a compromise reached by Romans to appease the rising Christian population, and the established pagan religions (Pagan as a general term, there are in fact many different types).

Even the days of the week are pagan.

Saturday - Saturn's day.
Thursday - Thor's day.

Also, Sunday is in fact the first day of the week. Saturday is the Sabbath

This is really more interesting than arthropods. I might start sneaking more chronograph material into the culture cup. Which as I said, is interesting. For instance the Gregorian calender is in fact 13 days ahead of the Julian calender. I learnt this in Ethiopia, where they still use a version of it.
