Scottish Professional players
First topic message reminder :
Was rather bored at work this morning and was thinking about how Scotland have a relatively small player base to pick from. I decided to compile a list of all the Scottish players
playing professionally that I could think of.

This is all the players that I could come up with, I put in a couple like Matt Russell who plays rugby league but a few people have mentioned as to someone who could make a very good outside back in Union and is still pretty young.
There doesn't seem to be as many players playing overseas as I thought there might have been. I have included players playing in the pro 12, Aviva, English Championship, Top 14, pro D2 and a few super rugby players that I could think off.
Does anyone know of any other Scottish or Scottish qualified players that I have missed.
Feel free to add to the list.
For me Tighthead is a little short of good depth and also wingers are a little short of top quality, more than I realised.
Overall though I think the depth and quality is a lot better than what it has in recent years and with a good amount of players coming through from age grade it should improve.

Shame. He's one hell of a unit.

Agreed, big shame. Good addition by Wales, particularly with Jones out of the picture and there being a big gap between Samson Lee and the next best tighthead.
I still hold out hope that both Nel and Cusack will prove to be useful for Scotland.

Re: Scottish Professional players
Was reading about the NRL season and came across Kane Linnett being talked up in a few articles. Plays for the North Queensland Cowboys and played for Scotland at the last world cup. Plays mainly at centre but can play wing.
He is a big unit at 6ft 4 and 17st. Looks a very good player at league scoring a good amount of tries and his defence is very solid.
The article I read also mentioned that he was also a very good rugby union player in his junior days but St George Illawara were the first team to offer a contract when he left school and went down the league route instead!

I think where we need to bring some players in is maybe for the back-row and possibly 10.

I would say that Rossouw de Klerk is starting to look better for Glasgow in recent weeks, perhaps taken him some time to get used to playing over here. Not sure if he's on a 'project player' contract or not? Nel took a bit of time to settle in to the game here as well but he now hopefully looks like a real asset for us going in to the World Cup.

Yes agree about De Klerk, who has certainly upped his game now that he has got the chance of some game time. I would like to see him stay and I think he is on a two year contract anyway. The Glasgow prop who looks vulnerable at the moment is Big Mike Cussack, who is still struggling to get fit and has not really shown much form in the games he has played. With the two young TH's showing some form now, there are not going to be many passengers in this position now.

Another excellent game by Matty Russell for Warrington last night in Super League, come on SRU, have a look.

Agreed, I saw the Warrington game last night - Russell continues to impress both defensively and with ball in hand. In terms of pace, vision and sidestep I rate him higher than Hogg . If he does consider a move to Union it will be a few years away yet, however having said that he still only 21.

He really can beat a man, fantastic step, I would say he would be sure to score tries in Union. Not sure what the etiquette is for approaching contracted players but I'm sure the SRU could informally approach Warrington and say that they would love a chance to speak to Russell if Warrington were ever agreeable to it. The SRU could also ask his agent to contact them when Russell's contract is due for renewal.

Re: Scottish Professional players
Unfortunately Russell still has 3 years left on his contract so would probably have to involve a fee being paid. Saying that Russell won't be on massive money at Warrington so wouldn't be a huge fee to pay.

If he's only 21 there's no immediate rush - maybe worth targeting next summer?

Re: Scottish Professional players
Definitely time on his side to get him across to union but I'd say the sooner the better. Would be the ideal replacement for Maitland/dth at glasgow.
Having had a look at Kane linnett as well I think he is definitely worth a look too. Would make a very good 13 in Union.

I really appreciate all of the effort Maj.
Let's keep this updated as long as we can.
Or at least, until you are rightfully given McKie's job.

Re: Scottish Professional players
Great updated list Maj. Lets hope Toonie and Sean Lineen have been in touch with Nick Fraser - he looks like a heck of a unit http://www.raysrugby.com.au/players/nick-fraser-3/
Interesting to note that Glasgow's new signing Greg Peterson played for the North Harbour Rays. I wonder whether he was ever SQ?
The Gordon Club seem to supply the North Harbour NRC team with a lot of players and there seem to be plenty of guys with extremely Scottish sounding names at the club: Cam Crawford, Hamish Angus and Tom (Tam) Matthews, to name but a few. A club to keep an eye on...

I see that Lachlan McCaffrey has signed for Leicester from London Welsh - did we ever find out if he had Scottish roots or did we just guess he did based on his name??

Having played for London Welsh, he'll certainly have the 'winning mentality' to fit straight in to our national set up if he is SQ

He's SQ but he also seems to be qualified to play for England, so he's got a decision to make. I would imagine he's registered for Leicester as EQ too

Re: Scottish Professional players
Miles. I may be wrong but doesn't each EPL team receive more or less funding from the RFU depending on how many EQ players they have in their squad? I'd imagine he's seen as EQ until he gets picked for Scotland or Scotland A?

Re: Scottish Professional players
Tbh not sure he would be that close to a scotland call up. Not really done much at any of his previous clubs. Big unit but isn't really able to put it to use.

I agree that he's miles away from Scotland too, but worth keeping an eye on. Leicester are no mugs so they must have seen something in him to sign him.

Sounds a bit like Keiran Low in that respect, hopefully he will develop his game significantly with Glasgow.

An extensive list, well done. How have you managed to find out if certain players are SQ, for example Bulumakau at Doncaster and Watkins at Bristol? I was wondering if Keiran Moffat the kiwi centre at London Scottish might also be SQ on account of his name?

Re: Scottish Professional players
Bulumakau was born in Fiji but was brought up in Scotland where he has lived most of his life. George Watkins is either a parent or grand parent, article about him ages ago online.
I did wonder about keiran moffat but I;m sure when he signed for LS they said he wasn't Scottish qualified.

Thanks. London Scottish should put a little avatar or similar next to SQ players profiles on their website.

Re: Scottish Professional players
Another player to add to the list.
Ex Aberdeen Grammar & Heriots Lock/Back Row Murray Douglas is playing for Melbourne Rising in the Australian Rugby Championship.
His potential second row partner could be Australian Lock Luke Jones.
Nick Fraser is playing for the North Harbour rays again this season as well.

Have updated the list again with all the sq players playing pro in the main leagues for this season.
2 new additions are Sam McNicol at the Chiefs in NZ and Rob Thompson a centre playing for the Highlanders.

So going on the basis of players with Scottish names; are Ross Chisholm the Quins squad fullback and Lachlan McCaffrey the aussie Leicester no8 SQ?

If Chisholm is, his baby brother James (back row) is definitely one to watch out for

Re: Scottish Professional players
McCaffrey as far as I am aware does have Scottish heritage but isn't SQ because I think its possibly a great grandparent.
He is English qualified though.
I have heard Ross Chisholm's name mentioned before but not sure if he is SQ or not so haven't included him in the list of players.

Re: Scottish Professional players
I was reading about an up and coming London Irish centre who has apparently been outstanding when he's played in the Challenge Cup matches this year. SQ, but being touted by England.

Will add him to the list.
He certainly looks a very good prospect, seen him on the highlights programme and from the few clips he does look very good & extremely powerful for a 19 year old.
As the article says though its not like 5 years ago when he would walk straight into the team.

The advantage that we have though is that it will be a hell of a lot more difficult to get in the England team, and even the Welsh team. Especially given he is at a less glamorous club.
Maybe if they get relegated Edinburgh can swoop in for him.
I just hope we don't end up with another Shingler / Tomasso Allan farce if he does end up showing promise.
I suspect Edinburgh will be facing him this weekend so I'm sure the Scotland Exiles set up will keep an eye on him.

Re: Scottish Professional players
Certainly the more the merrier to challenge for a Scotland spot.
Suspect Wales and the Welsh regions will be interested as well. With Jamie Roberts getting a bit older they will be looking for a replacement for him.
Another player who may be Scottish qualified but not had it confirmed is Blade Thomson the Hurricanes back row/lock.
He is 25 and has been capped by the Maori. He is a very good player and for his size is extremely mobile and quick.
He would probably walk into most international teams but obviously being NZ he is stuck behind Kaino, Messam, Luatua etc.

Re: Scottish Professional players
Have updated the list again with Sam Underhill at the ospreys being confirmed as Scottish qualified. He is also qualified for the USA where he was born and England. Suspect it will be England he plays for, seems like a good young player but we are fairly well stocked at openside with young good players.
For those that are on twitter, the Scottish exiles twitter page is worth a follow, lots of good info on some of the young guys playing for Aviva academy teams.
