Australian Open Day 10-14 - Djokurray! And others! :P
First topic message reminder :
Well some of you hardcore mob will no doubt be up watching the first round matches and even up first thing if your boarding the Fed Express. I will be utilising the power of Sky+!
So we have Federer, Nadal, Murray, Berdych, Gulbis and Dimitov all in action on the men's side.
On the ladies we have Halep, Sharapova, Bouchard, Ivanovic, Kerber and young gun Bencic.
Should be an action packed day.

This ain't a cruise, this is mud wrestling.
How Fed lets himself to be like this with these third rate players, is weird.

Granted, but at the same time to blow 3 mini breaks in a TB is not something I would've expected from Federer.

That is a big upset. I didn't expect that but credit to Seppi who believed right through to the finish. For Roger, well just further evidence that old father time is wearing him down especially in five setter matches.
Murray won 6-1 6-1 7-5. He was very good for two and a half sets but his level dropped near the end but got the job done.

Murray's luck seems to be in again. Once again Federer has been taken out for him. Will be the death of tennis if Murray where to be gifted a 3rd Major...

Credit to Seppi - anyone who's actually gone and seen him play will know he's a v decent player who has pushed many of the top players in the past, though perhaps lacked the self-belief to take it to the next level.
In the past Federer has won many a match from this position and squeaked through by the skin of his teeth - its only natural that this will balance out over time, and Seppi is someone who is good enough to take his chance on the day (eventually against Fed - he'd never beaten him before).
So, what happens next in that part of the draw - who benefits? Well, as decent a player as he is, Seppi will struggle to maintain his level in this match against another tough opponent - his 1st win against Federer may help his confidence for the rest of this year but may have taken a lot of him in the short term. Kyrgios is the immediate beneficiary - the young Aussie had a quiet time after his Wimbledon exploits last year and even took a part of the year off. However, he's coming into the form at just the right time and will thrive on the crowd.
Kyrgios plays Jaziri next who he should beat reasonably comfortably - and then it'll be Seppi in the 4th round for a chance to meet Murray. With the odd notable exception, Murray handles the young guns quite well but if his serve is off and he starts getting grumpy he could get blown away by Kyrgios.

Which clown thought Federer was the favourite for the title?
I didn't see the match but the stats look like it was as much due to Federer having a bad day as Seppi playing well.

Don't forget Dimitrov. Last time he met Murray at a slam he won easily in straight sets. I would obviously expect it to be much closer this time and either player could win. As we just saw with Seppi/Federer you can't write anyone off.

Somewhere in the world, there is a great evil David Ferrer angered, explaining how he has never in his life caught Federer on one of these bad days. Even Verdasco eventually beat Nadal

I think today is the day that the hope was overtaken by the reality. People can look for signs and reasons that Federer is back to his best, but at his age its always going to be a tall order for him to win any more slams.
I am not writing him off completely, but he has won 1 slam in the last 5 years.
An amazing career and a threat on his day whatever happens

We need some need blood in Tennis veins, correct, Jahu? Djokovic looks good, as does Nadal (at least playing a nobody, right KR?).
Dimi may not get through Murray, so Murray-Kyrgios, Nadal-Berdych. Come on, New Faces!

4 of the 128 men in the main draw were under 20. Ymer being the only one still holding a Juniors ranking.
Is about time that some of the WC were set aside for Juniors at tournaments to at least give them a taste of the tour?

Wow! Great win for Seppi, takes a lot of bottle to get over the line against the big guns - hopefully he can continue it into the next round. He even went to 5 in the previous round too, so doubly impressive.
A real shame about the godlike SF-streak being splintered apart, but even that couldn't last forever. Gracious reaction from Fed in the post-match interviews too. His slam winning days are over, now. How he bounces back from this particular loss will tell us a lot about what he wants to do with the remainder of his career.
Some good 4th round matches on this side of the draw, anyways! I think Tomic will take out Berdych, as well as the latter is playing. And if he does that, I expect him to beat Nadal too.

Can't say I blame you, Berdych has looked really good so far...wouldn't be at all surprised to see him make the final. I've just got a small (crazy) feeling about Tomic. Rafa will be up against it, irrespective of who gets through!
Just realised the Aussies have two players through to Round 4 - that's a good showing.

Fed no ways going to beat Kyrgious , Murray, Rafa and Nole to win the title, so wise decision to tank the match today, but all credits to Seppi for taking the chances.

Can I ask if you watched that match in its entirity.. because I did. Every last shot of it. TANKED?? are you serious.? he was outplayed particularly in the first two sets..Fed never came on court until the third. Why would he attempt to win the third set if he just wanted to quit.. or take the fourth to a tie break... ??? dear me any excuse is better than none

Gee whizz - I do not believe people questioning Federer's integrity in a desperate bid to protect his god-like status. He lost today busting a gut to win that match fighting off break points against him in the fourth set to get to a tie break after three hours of play. He lost because his best today was not the required standard to get the job done - end of story. It is also mean to suggest such a thing taking credit away from Seppi after he has lost his ten previous matches against Fed.
As for Gerry - hmm I wonder how many multiple slam winners have won all their slams beating the world No.1 in the final? Besides is it Andy's fault if Roger isn't good enough to reach the QFs and earn the right to line-up a possible match against Murray who still has to get there himself in any case.

Naxroy I hold my breath every time Rafa goes out on court... anyone at this stage could be too much for him
But it seems to be he is better playing the more established players than the unknowns..
Any further round is a bonus for me
