Australian Open Day 10-14 - Djokurray! And others! :P
First topic message reminder :
Well some of you hardcore mob will no doubt be up watching the first round matches and even up first thing if your boarding the Fed Express. I will be utilising the power of Sky+!
So we have Federer, Nadal, Murray, Berdych, Gulbis and Dimitov all in action on the men's side.
On the ladies we have Halep, Sharapova, Bouchard, Ivanovic, Kerber and young gun Bencic.
Should be an action packed day.

Ah ok, thanks.Silver wrote:It Must Be Love wrote:Does Murray still have a negative H2H vs Berdych, or has he managed to turn that around ?
Nope, still 6-4 to Berdych.
Berdych has a habit of troubling Murray, but I think in Australia over a BO5, I'd give Murray the upper hand.

Muzza breaks back when it was needed to trail 4-5 in the fourth set.

Dimitrov brain freeze as usual. He has the worst shot selection at crucial moments. He has the shots but doesn't have the mental strength. Murray is playing well and is much more solid

Very poor firm from Murray not conceding that point! Very bad taste, clearly had lost the point

No different to Dimitrov for not conceding the point in the second when the ball bounced twice.

Andy Murray wins in fourth set. Match of the tournament? Perhaps. Murray has 16 slam quarters on the bounce now. Well played Dimi though - it takes two to make a great match.

Good match. Would have wanted Dimi to win, the silver lining is that Andy probably has a better chance against Rafa. Hopefully he can take care of Kyrgios easily.

Sorry I disagree. Murray should have won in three sets as the second set he did all the running and chucked it away. If you mean for more entertainment for the fans then yes I would agree.

Kyrgios came back from two sets down against Seppi, which would indicate a tough fight on the cards.
A fifth set would have been nice. Good to see Murray fight through.

Andy Murray now moves up to joint 8th in the Open era for most wins at the Australian Open going up above Mats Wilander and Andy Roddick going level with Wayne Ferreira.

Kyrgios played a couple of 5-setters already and Andy is a much tougher opponent than what he faced so far. I am sure he will give his best, but I would be surprised if he troubled Andy too much, and shocked if he beat him.laverfan wrote:summer blues wrote:... the silver lining is that Andy probably has a better chance against Rafa. Just studying the Murray Berdych H2H in more detail now; interesting that away from clay Murray hasn't done too badly. I remember their USO 2012 match, where Murray came back.

The return is the key, Kyrgios relies quite heavily on his serve, especially is hes (likely) knackered, and Murray returns well. I expect Kyrgios could get a set with some inspiration, but it would be a famous night if he won.
Now Rafa-Berdych
Berdych in four, Ive punted on the big Berd to win big this year and im sticking.

I think Murray will destroy kyrgios! Straight sets written all over it for me. Murray is playing well and he will keep making kyrgios hit the extra ball until the errors come .

Ferrer vs nishikori tomorrow, can feel a 5 setter coming there. Really hard to call but I think slight edge to Kei in that one

I want Berdych to beat Nadal. He's going to lose at some point in this tournament anyway given how rusty he is, and I'd prefer it to be against Berdych than anyone else.temporary21 wrote:The return is the key, Kyrgios relies quite heavily on his serve, especially is hes (likely) knackered, and Murray returns well. Losing to Berdych for Nadal is the most harmless loss.

I agree with him. Maybe three if Berdych can get the first set.
But then I also think Raonic is going to turf out Novak, so don't listen to me - I'm an idiot

What makes you say that? Cannot see Rafa losing to Berdych. Berdych is too predictable and not mobile enough. His big shots alone are not enough to unsettle Rafa.
But if you are correct, he should pay Vallverdu his weight in gold.

Murray skipped the 2013 french open, so the sequence was broken.

Right rephrase it then - in the last sixteen slams he has competed in he has made at least the quarters. And you were right natural talent does win out in the end.

Of the GS's hes played in, hes made 16 on the bounce. Otherwise you might say 16/17, which is still brilliant

Yup, sorry Craig but that streak is dead and buried. Well...I guess he's currently on 6, which is something. Honestly I'm impressed he made the QFs of every slam last year, given his back/form.

So Murray's made 7 consecutive 1/4 finals....

Disappointing by Grigo. Such a big chance to make a 2nd GS SF and he lets it pass away, the guy holds forks for weapons where you need to have bazookas. Come on Nick

Just finished Murray v Dimitrov on sky+. Great match, both played very well. Murray played a bit better. His movement was absolutely superb. He looked as agile as 3-4 years ago.
I think he'll beat Kyrgios in 3 or 4 sets. Is he back up to slam winning level, a high enough level to take out Rafa and potentially then Novak? I'm not sure.

And I recent memory Nadal's beaten Federer 5/6 times enroute to winning majors. Nadal's beaten Djokovic as well. Djokovic has beaten both Nadal and Federer in the same event.

What he can't afford against Djokovic and Nadal is for the first serve to be off.
Dimi did return some of the big first serves and that doesn't bode well when you consider Djokovic and Nadal will certainly get better purchase on the returns.
Murray needs to attack those short balls much more. Can't hang back against them two.

I do recall someone having won every slam they had by beating the no 1 in the final. Cant think who it is though.
Or who won the last Olympic singles gold, or 9 masters etc etc etc
Disliking someone so successful, that intensely must be incredibly draining, id rather just enjoy the tennis and let the chips fall as they may.

I will leave you to ponder the answer to my question and I would be amazed if you can bring yourself to utter the answer.
The amazing thing to me is if people post here then I presume we are all tennis fans just like those crammed into the Rod Laver Arena tonight and they certainly felt regally entertained by the brilliant tennis on offer yet listen to certain posters on here and the negative vibe is terrible. I can only presume then that some of those posters will never be able to appreciate cracking tennis when they see it.
Enjoy the rest of your day - I know I will.
