Rugby stag do ideas
Folks,
Looking for some suggestions for a stag do revolving around rugby between August-November time. Obviously there is plenty going on in those months, but it has to be:
A - Affordable (rules out picking up last minute tickets for the world cup!)
B - Have some sort of nightlife near by (I'm sure your local rugby club's 7s tournament will be great fun, but if your nightlife consists of one pub and a meal at the local carery, probably best avoided for a stag do! )
C - Not be in Scotland!
Unfortunately the ideal events are in May (IRB 7s at Twickenham, Bournemouth 7s festival), but that is both too soon to organise and too far away from my wedding (March 2016).
So here are a few of my ideas - please feel free to suggest others:
- World club rugby 7s, August (Twickenham)
On paper this events looks quite good, but looking at the pictures of the last few years the stadium has been near empty without much atmosphere! Has anyone been to recommend it? I've been in touch with them and they are definitely planning on doing it again this year.
- Premiership rugby 7s, August (TBC)
Again this looks like a good thing to go to, but depends on the location this year. Still to be confirmed.
- Ireland V Scotland world cup warm up game, August (Aviva)
Getting tickets could be an issue for this, plus I've already been to Dublin 4 times, and for 2 stag do's!
- World cup warm up games for random nations
I think Kingsholm and Welford road are hosting warm up games...
Any other suggestions? If anyone has any non-rugby related suggestions too, that feel free to pass them on.
Thanks!

Re: Rugby stag do ideas
I'm pretty much in the same boat as you, getting married early next year and looking for a late Summer/Autumn Stag Do with a rugby theme!
Meeting my best man this weekend to firm up details but we are looking at two options.
1. If you have between 10 and 20 guys you can hire some pretty nice houses/apartments/cottages for a couple of nights for £100 a head. We're looking at doing this during the World Cup, on one of the knockout games weekends with plenty of beer, drinking games, sweepstakes etc. Will split the game watching between the pub and the house to keep costs down.
2. I appreciate you might revoke my membership for mentioning this but anyway...........
Our other option is Manchester on 10th October. Plenty of good drinking holes in that part of the world, we'd look to get a pub to show Scotland v Samoa group match on the TV during the afternoon then pop through to Old Trafford for the Rugby League - Super League final in the evening. Can get tickets for £20 each (puts the £50 minimum price for Scotland v Samoa to shame). Back into town for the night.
Don't know if League holds much water with you but I like to dip my toe in for the major events as the value puts "our game" to shame a lot of the time to be honest!
Hopefully a bit of food for thought, let us know what you settle on anyway! Cheers.

One of our warm ups is in Rome isn't it against Italy?
Rome is a fantastic place. I have been on a couple of rugby tours there.

Thank Jonny.
I'm not a massive league fan, but would watch the odd game. I'm sure it would be a great occasion though. Decent shout though!
Radge - I love Rome too and have been twice, but starts to hike up the price a bi.! Plus, I'm rubbish in the heat, and Rome in August is sweltering in shorts and t-shirt never mind whatever outfit they plan to put me in!

Re: Rugby stag do ideas
getting tickets for the warm up match against Ireland shouldn't be an issue. I'd hardly think that what is essentially a "dead rubber" match is going to sell out!
Plus it's in Dublin so you can get hammered without drawing too much attention to yourself

Played in this tournament about 6 years ago and it is one very fun weekend and wasn't as expensive as expected.
Have a few tournaments going on for the more serious teams but also had a few fun levels with a few stag dos entering.
Another mate went to Holland to take part in a 7s tournament with the rest of his stag party and had a blast.
For purely going to watch rugby I would really recommend a trip to Toulon, atmosphere there is amazing and lots of bars and eating places near the stadium. Apartments weren't too badly priced and could get some pretty big ones for all your group to stay so worked out fairly reasonable!

Re: Rugby stag do ideas
I'm not being funny, but do you honestly want a rugy theme, when you're heavily into that the rest of the year round?
For my best mate's stag do in Glasgow, we did go-karting, paint ball and hired a pool hall for a tournament.
It was awesome - largely because we'd simply never have done these things otherwise.
Just throwing that onto the front step and seeing if the cat licks it up. Or something.

if you end up having a stag do in Glasgow just be sure to avoid Barbeque Kings takeaway...
Re: Rugby stag do ideas
A non rugby related stag do I have heard is pretty good is hiring a canal boat. My mate did it last year and there were a lot of pubs along the canal route and was a pretty good laugh, only 2 people fell in and didn't hit anything with the boat despite being under the influence....not sure what the drink and boating rules are!

Just to say I went to the Club Rugby 7s and the stadium/atmosphere was pretty dead. Nowhere near as good as the Middlesex one.

Re: Rugby stag do ideas
Thanks guys.
GC, I know what you're saying, but I want to do something I like, and I like rugby! I've been to a few stag doos that are completely out of character of the person whose stag it is, and they've only done that kind of thing because they feel they have to! So a rugby weekend will be ideal for me.
I actually don't like go-karting at all - maybe it is because we always go the day after the first big night out on stag doos, but it always makes me want to ! I start off fairly well but then the feelings of wanting to chunder in my safety helmet start taking over and my performance suffers...!
My fiancée's brother and dad take part in a local shoot at an army camp in Edinburgh so was thinking, wherever I go, if we got back at lunchtime on the Sunday we could go do some clay pigeon shooting led by them. Will be a lot cheaper than going to a company to do it!

That's my concerns with the World Club 7s. It is the ideal event for what I'm looking for, other than the fact that they seem to get tiny crowds and there's no atmosphere! Will be a bit awkward if there's 15 guys in fancy dress and we're in an empty stadium surrounded by families and kids...
It has only been running the last two years I think, and the 2014 attendance looks bigger than 2013, but it is a bit of a risk to go there and end up being a damp squib...

Re: Rugby stag do ideas
There were groups of people dressed up, but I don't think it would be my first choice to suggest. Although I did go on the Saturday, whereas the final games were on the Sunday (IIRC). Maybe it was better attended then.

Whenever I've been to the IRB 7s in Scotland the first day is a lot more fun - people are up for it, whereas on the 2nd day people can't really be hooped any more and are hungover from the first day!

Re: Rugby stag do ideas
Another thought I had was to go to one of England's world cup warm up games, supporting the opposition obviously!
Again though I can see tickets being a problem as they only have two games at home, and it is a home world cup after all...
Apparently they are releasing ticket details later this month or early next month.

Can't think of any options you haven't already said, but having done a couple of rugby stags I do really enjoy them. Nice pub lunch, rugby, Indian or Chinese then pub\club. Unbeatable.

Just seen that the Barbarians are playing Argentina at Twickenham in November
http://www.barbarianfc.co.uk/news/barbarians-and-argentina-double-anniversary-celebration-at-twickenham-for-the-killik-cup/
Not the best time of the year, but certainly could be a shout!

It's 6 Super League games over two days including Wigan Warriors against Leeds Rhinos. I'm not a massive league fan but it would be a corker of a weekend followed by a night out in China town and Bijoux.

Majorca beach rugby tournament. Not sure when it is, but if the guys are up for it you can have a run out and then head off for the nightlife. Think it's in Magaluf.

Long time since I lived there, but there's loads of pubs, from 'Spoons to upmarket, a reasonable nightlife scene if that floats your boat and you can get fed in Timos Italian which is owned by Geordan Murphy and Castro.

Nottingham isn't far up the road and is a reasonably popular stag do location.

Mrs fES went to Uni there and whilst she's obviously not qualified to comment on Stag Dos, her immediate reaction was that it would be cheap. Right up your street then.....
