Six Nations Committee: Can't afford one more replica Trophy ? Empty Six Nations Committee: Can't afford one more replica Trophy ?

Post by gregortree Tue 17 Mar 2015, 12:06 pm

Wales will not be presented with a trophy if they win the Six Nations on Saturday. Instead, they will have to wait until the following day when they return to Cardiff from Rome to receive what is a new piece of silverware this season.

The Six Nations committee has only commissioned one replica trophy and that will be at Murrayfield where second-placed Ireland take on Scotland. The trophy itself will be at Twickenham, where the leaders England face France. Wales, who are in third position with an inferior points difference to the top two, would receive only players’ medals if they defeated Italy by a sufficient margin to deliver a third title in four years.

A spokesperson for the Six Nations said the decision on where to send the trophy and its replica had been based on points difference. England, on +37, and Ireland, on +33, were ahead of Wales, +12.

The real one will stay at Twickenham anyway.

I suppose that's fair enough, I can't think of another time where there has been 3 teams in contention, none of whom were playing each other in the final game

Based on that its quite surprising to me that they've even had the foresight to have a second trophy

And its not like the trophy can be presented until the final game is over anyway, the fans in Italy will be long gone

Like I said on another post somewhere, just make six of the blasted things and give one to everyone.

That way everyone would feel included in the cup-hoist of self-importance. Right now the concept of winners only getting cups is probably politically divisive, maybe racist, definitely sexist and getting on for being exclusionary of majority losers.

I don't see how European Human Rights law allows it to happen.

Or better still, mimic my Old School Parties back in the b&W world.  The maxim back then was "Bring your Own" (party food, that is)  Even when we were tiny we laughed at the grim reaper contradiction in terms that was, as some of us couldn't afford a sweet wrapper never mind a sweet!

So maybe teams in contention should be allowed manufacture their own version of the cup and bring it with them on their bus...... or Cargo Ship if the egos are big enough Wink

Has trophy been devalued by over production ?

It's either lift the trophy at a hotel in Italy or an airport in Cardiff if Wales win, so no huge difference.

What I find odd is that Ireland will lift the trophy on the pitch if they win, even though they'd have to wait until after the England game and all the fans will have left.

Hasn't that happened before? Players still there, fans gone home. It wouldn't be a big fanfare deal with fireworks and music. It would be just a few minutes visual after the England game to show the Irish players doing the usual hoisting and laughing stuff, and probably wearing their evening night out suits.

Secret Fly, don't worry too much, the Irish lads may as well put on the DJs and get on with their evening in Edinburgh. England will take care of the trophy lifting later on.

Ah that's grand so.  We'll go ahead and have the drinks and England can drop off the trophy with us later in the week - send it over with O'Leary on one of his pay-for-the-wings cheap flights.

Thanks gregor.  It gets cold waiting in empty stadiums.

Has nobody considered the fact that if Wales win but England and Ireland lose, then points difference is irrelevant?

???

As in if Wales win and the other two lose, Wales win?

I think that might have crossed a few minds Scarpia?

Ireland won't lose after last week but England…most definitely this could be the shock result of the tourney, we haven't had one yet.

I don't think that was the shock result of the tournament, i think it will be on Saturday v England at Twickenham when France will do what they always do and decide to play rugby against an English side who seem to be at a crossroads.

GUARDIAN:
Racking up the points is suddenly everyone’s priority in the final week of the Six Nations, but the sharpest finisher in this year’s tournament will be wearing white. Jonathan Joseph has so far registered as many tries – four times in four games – as the Wales squad combined,

One man winner.

There it is then. Guardian Proof that England WILL score a try against France! But will Joseph's nailed on guaranteed try be enough to win the game? That's the bigger question.

Dear Secret,
Ireland are pushing England the closest. But Ireland do not have a great recent record in Edinburgh. No idea why that is. But there again Scotland have 'issues' still, and are desperately fighting to avoid the spoon. Hard to call that one. If England can TCUP and click with that 'final pass' which has been eluding them so far this tourny, then Joseph, Nowell, Brown, Youngs bros, might all be in with a shout of crossing the white line. Wales have a very long shot, but a shot. France will be in spoiling mode (robbed England last year with a couple of bounces). Such an exciting final day this year (exciting as in the permutations of outcomes, not necessarily as in brilliant rugby spectacle). I 'feel' that the real trophy has been allocated to the right stadium though. Good luck up north in the 'Burgh.

PS: "England have not had the chance to secure a Six Nations Championship at Twickenham since 1996, when Catt was a player. On that occasion they beat Ireland 28-15 to clinch the title in Will Carling’s final game as the England captain."

Yeah...nail biting day more than an exciting one - for most people. And even the supposed 'no hoper' sides (in terms of Collecting the Cup) have and sense a big role in the day. Oh what some of them would give to spoil a few parties!! Wink

Let the battle commence. Ireland have been getting ahead and containing up until Wales when they found themselves suddenly having to chase. But let's not forget that last year they were highest try scorers in the same contest. So you don't lose those abilities overnight. We'll see how we might play when we have to chase a target from the get-go.
