Twickenham travel guide
First topic message reminder :
Thought I'd start a discussion and advice thread for those heading to the Challenge Cup and Champions Cup finals - I've never been to Twickenham before so looking for some recommendations for
- Travel from central London and back again at night
- How busy trains / tube are
- Good places to drink and eat
- Anything else of interest
I'm going to the Challenge Cup final so any recommendations for the Stoop would be good too, but I'm sure there will be people on here going to Twickers for the main event so feel free to post recommendations for that too.
Cheers!

Well....you try to make them think the fare has already been paid.....
On a more serious note...I'd assume travel cards could be bought at Underground stations or shops?

The first part appeals greatly to the Aberdonian in me!
And, cheers, will look into that.

Re: Twickenham travel guide
If you're only down for a day then I would recommend a one day All Zone travel card. If you're arriving by train obtain a TC from the tube station. I think some train operators actually sell them on the train. It will cost £9 - £10 but covers bus tube and rail out to Twickenham.

When we are there for the day/evening we always get as Hound suggested the All Zones card covers you for all travel including to from Twickenham.

Cheers for that Hound. Yeah training it down from Edinburgh. (Going to be hellish on the way back, over 7 hours from Kings Cross to Aberdeen )
Shall pick up a travel card.

Re: Twickenham travel guide
I've just noticed that Twickenham is in zone 5, whereas Richmond and St Margarets are zone 4.
https://www.tfl.gov.uk/cdn/static/cms/documents/london-rail-and-tube-services-map.pdf
A zone 1-4 travel card is £12 and zone 1-6 is £17 - I'm assuming Twickenham is the best stop to get off at, and therefore we should get a zone 1-6 one?

I assume you are travelling after 9:30am. If so it is £12 for the 1-6 off peak travel card

Good point - thanks.
How much of a faff would it be getting off at Richmond to go to the Edinburgh fan zone at London Scottish, having few pints, then getting back on the train to Twickenham?

Re: Twickenham travel guide
I think London Scottish is less than a 10 min walk from Richmond station, so just a matter of trotting back to Richmond and hopping back on a train to Twickers, it will probably just be a lot more busy so leave yourself some time to get there

Has being in the "junior" comp been a help or a hindrance to that.

Re: Twickenham travel guide
Massive help.
As much as TJ hates it and thinks it is a waste of time, our season was looking pretty grim up until the first few round of the comp - we then picked up some moral boosting wins in Europe that gave us confidence going into the league.
There's still been some bad results, but I think if we had been in the main competition we wouldn't have had the confidence boost we needed for the league and still would have been struggling.
The only problem is player fatigue - our coach doens't know the meaning of the phrase 'player rotation' so most of the players will be running on empty come the end of the season. This might have a negative effect if we're needing to play in the playoffs for the Champions Cup.

Just realised the tube goes direct from my nearest stop (Tower Hill) to Richmond - happy days! Takes 40 minutes but will surely be quicker than getting the tube to Waterloo then getting on a train to Richmond.
Taxi from Richmond to the Stoop - sorted!

On that note, if anyone has one of those 16-25 rail cards, you can get a third off the travel card apparently.

Speaking of traveling about London, if you're feeling brave search #ClaphamJunction on twitter
Re: Twickenham travel guide
Ocassional lurker and London-based Weegie here. Thought I'd add my two cents to the info already in the thread.
-If you'll be coming down again at some point consider buying an Oyster Card. They're about a tenner and you pop money on it like the DART in Dublin and there's a daily cap. If you're travelling 1-6 its about £12. All you do is tap in and tap out.
-Watch for card clash. Contactless cards work like Oyster cards on the underground now If you do use an oyster make sure you're tapping in with the right one.
-Clapham Junction is the devil. Avoid at all costs if you're a tourist.
-Obviously travel before rush hour. Usually starts about 5ish.
-Some people prefer travelling to pubs in Richmond, some prefer Twickenham. I'm a Twickenham man myself. I say you're doing yourself a disservice not going to the Cabbage Patch.
-London Scottish are playing Worcester in the first leg of the semi-final playoff at 1:15 on Saturday if you're looking for something to do. The Scotch pies are incredible.
All the best to Edinburgh, I'll be rooting for you down the pub. And if anyone else managed to nab one of the free tickets to the Champions Cup game on Saturday I'll be the chap in the Warriors shirt.

Re: Twickenham travel guide
Eejit, nice first post. Welcome.
I've managed to bag the free tickets. I'm taking my youngest and my mate (one time understudy to W Carling esq at Quins) is taking his daughter. I hadn't thought of wearing my Warriors jersey but I can see it might be worth a giggle. Where are you sitting?

Cheers for the warm welcome lads.
Jim, we're in the east stand i think. I figured I mght as well wear the Glasgow shirt as it'll more than likely be the closest either of us see the Warriors at the champions cup final.
You'll manage I'm sure Glove but it really is a horrendous station and horribly busy all the time. Twickenham trains are usually platform 6 but watch which one you hop on. Some take ten minutes but the ones that go through Sheen are closer to a twenty five.

Re: Twickenham travel guide
Eejit, we're in the corner of the east stand section L21. down near the try line. My mate and his daughter are up in M25.
Young son is determined he's supporting Toulon. "Merci, Sir Jonnee" is all I've got out of him this week. MrsPip studied in Clermont for a year as part of her degree and I have fond memories of the town so I may be at odds with my boy.
Most likely I'll wait until I feel some kind of emotional connection with one side: probably based on whichever set of supporters offers me wine and croque messieurs in the car park.
