Irish Provinces NEWS & GOSSIP thread 2015-16-17
What it says in the title - a place to put all bits of news not worth starting a thread for the Four Proud Provinces of Ireland such as new signings, interviews that maybe of interest to others etc.
I've just added on 17 as its not a huge thread.

Munster sign Mark Chisholm from Bayonne on a 2 year contract to try and fill the large hole left by Paul O'Connell.

Looks like a very good signing - seems that Toulon had short listed him if POC didn't go to Toulon.

Looks like a great signing for Munster. Will probably get fed up with the weather within 6 months and do a Kane Douglas though.

According to some reports, only last week, Toulon were interested in signing Chisholm and Bayonne were expecting him to remain with them. A hugely experienced player who was the Bayonne captain for the last three seasons.

He can't make the excuse he didn't know about the weather anyway. He was on the 2010 Australian NH tour and would have experienced the horizontal rain at first hand in Thomond Park (he wasn't playing in it though) when Munster beat Australia. Seems he is a good friend of Paul Warwicks as well.
Only Aussie we've had so far that found the weather 'difficult' was Will Chambers (and he was a back - from rugby league)!

Brumbies players all want to come to Munster because Laurie Fisher was always talking it up when he went back there.
Its great (and useful) that ex-Munster coaches all seem to leave on very good terms (including Rob Penney who tweeted that he would love to come back to Munster a few weeks ago).
It seems Rob is now also helping to coach the Japanese U20s.

Does Chisholm fill the last NIQ spot for Munster? Presume the other provinces have filled their spaces already.

The way it is now:
BJ Botha (til Dec)
Mark Chisholm NIQ
CJ Stander (IQ in Nov)
Tyler Bleyenthaal (project)
Francis Saili NIQ
Gerhard van den Heever (project)
Might be a dispensation because of Paul O'Connell leaving a year before his contract was up. Most worrying is BJ leaving though.

Is there not some Piutau(?) fella meant to be heading to Munster. POC being released early has to give them some latitude.
Pick up a TH after the rwc possibly? Would Ross move down possibly? Even if he did it still looks crowded having Moore and Furlong that close in age both in the same province.

I thought it was only 1 project player per province? Going by your listings Munster have 3 at present?

Top signing in my opinion. One of the few leaders on and out the pitch for Bayonne during the last couple of years. The salary he was on made it too difficult for Bayonne to keep him in prod2.

It doesn't matter how many of the NIQ's are project players. The old quota was 4 NIQ's plus 1 project. All 5 of the NIQ' s could be project players if the province wanted that.

Same way as saying that they can become IQ. I'm not sure who the Project is after CJ (Tyler or Gerhardt - probably Tyler as Gerhard will be IQ next year and Tyler will have 2 more years to run.

Leinster are very slow about announcing Leo as the new head coach. I wonder what the delay is? Anyone got any info?

Last I heard they offered him a 2 year deal. Id suspect they are trying to settle on the full coaching ticket before announcing anything.

You'd imagine though it would help to have a named head coach when recruiting.

Crazy offering him the position. Very little coaching experience and their forwards didn't look as good last season as they did under Gibbes.

The Provinces and Clubs to get an extra €4m from the IRFU
The IRFU have announced their “strong financial performance” in the 2014/15 season will allow them increase funding to the provincial and club game by €4 million.
Honorary treasurer Tom Grace, speaking at tonight’s Annual General Meeting at the Aviva stadium, pointed to an €8.7 million surplus due to “continuing strong ticket sales, new broadcast agreements and the prize-monies generated by the national team thanks to their success.”
Coincidentally, the union received almost €4 million for winning the Six Nations this season. SuperRichProvinces

You've got to wonder why the Welsh Regions didn't see any of the money going back to them when they won the Six Nations. No wonder their regions are so financially fecked.
Munster lost to Grenoble tonight.

Interview here with incoming President of IRFU who was formerly the Chairman of PRCG (Professional Contracting Review Group) who brought in the one player per position and brought in David Nucifora as Performance Director. Some interesting stuff here.

Alan Tynan (Leinster sub academy) scored a goal yesterday in All Ireland semi final in the win over Dublin. It would be some double to win Hurling Minor AI and Leinster Schools Cup in the one year!
Other news about schools stars - Bill Johnson (18 year old outhalf) and who won the Munster Senior Cup with Rockwell this year came off the bench for tyler bleyendaal after 30 mins v Grenoble. Seems to have been fairly impressive - just lacking physically. Apparently kicked very well. Bleyendaal also made his debut for Munster and seems to have been impressive until he was taken off with a bit of a strain (precautionary).
Comments generally were that Grenoble are no great shakes (considering they are starting in Top 14 next weekend).

There's no wondering to be done. One man decided that only 1 team at the top of the tier in wales was worth pulling out all the stops for. Now the game in Wales is a decade behind where it should be.

What I don't understand is why it taking so long to pay off for the Mellenium Stadium. Am I right in thinking it cost 100m fifteen years ago?

That was a fortune back then. Between inflation, interest, much lower sponsorship, ticket prices etc the WRU wouldnt have the money they now have. Even the Scots have only recently completed or nearing completion of paying for murrayfield.

The IRFU have paid off their share of the Aviva (about 70m) and that was only a few years ago. I think the IRFU saved up first! Still, the IRFU have similar income to the WRU and runs 4 pro teams. The SRU don't have the same level of income as IRFU or WRU.

So with Darcy only on a short term contract and presumably not going to the World Cup, will he keep playing for Leinster until its over or will he just retire? Not like hell be injury cover. Well hopefully not.
Could be good to have someone around with a bit of experience but at the same time he's taking away game time from players who will be there for the rest of the season.

Leinster might need him. It seems Shane Monahan had the option of a short term contract from both Leinster & Munster so they must be (or have been) looking for some centre cover for the RWC.

He'll hang around during the world cup as injury cover and then retire. Been a great servant and as the commentator said the other day, its his 16 years playing for Ireland. 16!! Incredible thinking about it.

Cullen has been named as Leinster coach. Kurt McQuilkan has had his contract extended to 2 years as defence coach. John Fogarty as scrum coach. Girvan Dempsey as backs coach while Richie Murphy is on Ireland duty.

Feels that way. Dempsey would have a better cv in place to take on the head coach role than Cullen in my opinion.
Basic skills and passing went to pot under MOC. Don't see any part of this coaching ticket changing that. Cullen was a talismanic lock during a most successful period of time but he was a person for the pack to follow rather than someone who led strategically.
He also seems to have been left unblemished from being part of the MOC team. All the blame is being put onto MOC, which I do myself, but is that right, the whole coaching ticket didn't seem to be that decent.

It was more a 'no one else wanted it' kind of appointment.

Fair. I wasn't slagging Cullen, it's just that a high profile team like Leinster once had masterminds like Cheika and Schmidt at the helm - Cullen seems to be a bit of a slight stepdown and I don't think he has equal credentials to some of his predecessors. I thought MOC did well with what he had.

Its a bit of a poisoned challenge - very high expectations of a Leinster coach and as Rob Penney would say, I'm not sure whether they have the 'cattle'.
It didn't help that MOC got no support from his bosses (Nucifora or Schmidt) either, who hung him out to dry.

Rightfully so. MOC was a disaster. He had most of the Ireland squad that won the 6 nations playing bad rugby. He openly wrote Ian Madigan off on air and then refused to play him even though they only had the very limited Gopperth.
