Anyone else remember the days where we couldn't score tries but we had a great defence?

The referee is probably feeling guilty about not giving a deserved red to the Scottish stamper in the first half.
Ooh I missed that, was it bad?
Not really. Kicked out at someone holding him and hit the upper arm. Not far from the head, then it would have been red.

Some extremely soft penalties there were too. Samoa got the rub of the green in the first half but can't buy a decision this half. Well until this final attack when Pyper seems to be desperate to create a close finale. Odd reffing today. Hell of a game though.
The stamp was because the Samoan was hanging onto his foot. Wasn't on the head or neck so yellow was fine.

Bet Scotland will be hoping Wales win next,
The Scottish defence will get ripped to shreds by the Aussie on today's performance.

Good win for Scotland. They'll need a week to recover from that! They'll be feeling sore for sure.

It is a shame, Samoa really did deserve to win that game. I do think that they was given some penalties that should not of been penalties.
But well played Scotland you did enough to win but was very lucky in my opinion.
If they give Man of the Match to a Scottish player they want shooting.

Great game tough on Samoa who would have won had the ref treated them fairly. Jaco did the same to Fiji in the first game.
Ray Lee-Lo was superb after having a quiet World Cup the Blues will be looking forward to having him in their ranks and how can't Fortuali get into the Saints team he was superb also?

Well done Scotland on the entry into the 1/4s There was a lot of work in there to do considering the Samoans kept coming back for more.
I guess the defence will be a major issue for Cotter now but it still takes loads of inner confidence to push back in that often frenzied game.

Re: Scotland v Samoa, 10 October
Hmm. A lot of selective remembering here.
The big physicality and the great broken field running looks great and is a crowd pleaser but it's only half the game. Scotland left at least 12 points in kickable penalties out there and there were at least 2 yellow cards Samoa could have received in that second half for high tackles and offsides. Kahn is a good captain and seemed to talk Peyper out of a couple of these awards. Incredible that their blindside stayed on the field.
Sure, the more exciting team lost. But the more deserving team? No, I don't think that's sustainable.
Samoan fly half or Ley-Lo were MOM for me. Both absolutely superb. Any clubs interested in signing John Hardie?
The bottom line is that we will give the Wallabies or Wales a bigger test than that Samoan team. Shock and awe is completely intuitive when you have nothing to lose.

Hoping for a Wales win now, partially because I'm fed up with Australia doing well, secondly because despite the controversial ending in the six nations the Welsh at Murrayfield were brilliant throughout and also and most importantly because the way you're injuries are going it'll be the u16s girls we face next week.

Selective remembering indeed! Scotland could have had someone in the bin or red carded for a clear out where the Samoan 7 was driven down on his neck. Hogg could have also been binned for a deliberate knock on.

Deliberate knock on is only a yellow if it denies a definite try, that far out you can't say that for sure, it's all academic anyway, the Samoans were out. We saw a team playing the biggest game of many of their careers and another playing effectively with nothing to lose, they could take risks Scotland couldn't, it was a game Scotland could have won 3-0 and it would have been worth celebrating, also with Scotland's dominance in the second half they lacked momentum simply because of Samoan penalties, if it had been the Six Nations there would have been at least two yellow cards. Also he wasn't driven down he was swept up, it was still a foul mind you but to say it was driven down suggests an intent to seriously injure and that is untrue and unfair

Re: Scotland v Samoa, 10 October
No, a deliberate knock on is a penalty try if it definitely stops a try. If it's cynically stops a try scoring chance (such as a breakaway) it is often/unusually yellow. However, we don't know what this ref would have given as it wasn't seen as a penalty.
I don't think he was driven down but was moved in a way that twisted and put pressure on his neck.

Yes but you have to punish the intent not the outcome, the Scotland players got lower and drove upwards, tell me how were you taught to ruck? It was unfortunate the way that he landed but it was just as much as the result of his body position and others around him as the drive. I don't question that it was a penalty but it was not a yellow or red card.HammerofThunor wrote:No, a deliberate knock on is a penalty try if it definitely stops a try. I'd hope so, the idea of going up against Charteris, Jones, Douglas et al with Tim Swinson isn't exactly uplifting

Re: Scotland v Samoa, 10 October
Wow. What a game.
After the SA game, I half-jokingly said we should start a petition suggesting that we practice re-starts. Now I am serious about it. How can we be so rubbish at such an important aspect of the game.
Anyway, a very mixed bag
Positives
Laidlaw ran the game so well that I defy Jimbopip and his wife, Schittferbrains, to say otherwise
Richie Gray had his best game for a while
Hardie is a really classy player
Samoa were a joy to watch
Strauss had his best game
Negatives
Have the centres and stand-off spent all week ignoring each other and then carried they it on to today. Awful defensive strategy
The ref. He watches TV more than a lardy-arsed Weegie coach potato. Man up and make a decision.
Denton's hands don't work properly
Ryan Wilson thought he was back in a kebab shop

Just saw a bizarre stat on the BBC pages. Lamont debut'ed against Samoa and got both his 50th and 100th cap against them too.
A committed guy compared to many others who have worn the national jersey. Nt necessarily that fittest, fastest or strongest but with an attitude that is a real example to the likes of Hogg

I don't think there's a big issue with Hogg's attitude, I think the red mist descends and he makes mistakes but he apologises soon after every time. We need to remember he was capped young and his caps don't reflect his age, compare his attitude to James O'Connor who was capped at a similar age and we're overestimating the scale of the problem, that said if his constant haranguing of referees doesn't stop soon, or these supposed isolated incident then there's a real problem.
