George Ayoub - a tmo with a pathological fear glasses, which is unfortunate when you need them so urgently.

I sometimes get the feeling that Mr Veldsman is not in possession of the most incisive and astute intellect - able to identify and analyse, in the moment, all the salient points of a referral. Perhaps it's just my perception, but there you go.

Reasonably happy as an Ireland fan, Barnes is who we wanted to dodge given our record with him. Of the 4 named, Owens would have been my first choice but we could have done a lot worse than Garces.

I think the kiwis were hoping for him so they could banish all their hoodoos in one go.
He has been improved this RWC on his previous record. I guess it is unlikely we were going to get Owens, but would have preferred any to Joubert.
I have a feeling Mr Barnes was actually brought up in Wales??? The Chepstow boarders area...? Not that he has ever demonstrated any sympathy towards Wales...

Both sides should be happy with this appointment, good ref 2nd only to Nigel Owens IMHO.

It would of been nice to see Wayne Barnes refing the All blacks v France game.
Wonder what kind of greeting he would of got when he walked on the pitch?

Barnes went to school in Wales (Monmouth School) so he learned his rugby there.

It's clutching at straws to say Barnes is going to favour Wales because he was educated at Monmouth. You clearly don't know anything about the school.

His term time was less than two years.....
Irish slating Barnes are clutching at straws big time, especially when he is probably the best performing official at the World Cup.

Joubert!
Scotland fans have nothing but bad memories of him - he was in charge of that horrific Scotland-Wales game in 2013 where he blew his whistle every 4.5s, there weere 83 scrum re-sets, 174 penalties and the ball was in play for a grand total of 4 minutes. *

Re: Quarter Finals - Officials
Not a fan of Barnes, don't forget he ref'd our last RWC outing against the Boks and refused to go to the TMO to check that (now) important kick. Mind you, in a strange way he did us a favour, as if he did, we would have won and met the All Blacks earlier..
Looking at the other officials though, he is the best choice of a bad bunch.. Obviously we wouldn't have got Owens, so could have had from those selected to ref first, Garces or Joubert, of which neither stand out (IMO) and both have an slight SH bias. If we look at those running the line, who could have been picked to ref: Clancy or Doyle.. GOOD GOD NO, neither good enough at this level IMO. Peyper or Lacey, well Lacey again not good enough and my mind still not made up over Peyper. The Poite or Pollock, juries out... Finaly Jackson or Gauzere, both hit or miss, either have good games or shockers.
So on reflection, I reckon Barnes isn't a bad option....
Also, I reckon the final will be ref'd by Barnes.. Personally, I think Owens should have it if Wales get kicked out, but I think there will be pressure to see an Englishman play his part in the final...

Can't imagine too many Welsh or SA fans having a problem with Barnes.
As I said previously he's been on a curve over the last 18 months and is probably up there with Owens at the minute, both teams will know what to expect from the off and there will be no excuses about interpretation come post match.
I'd be worried (moreso now) if I was a Scot, Joubert has this tendancy to allow the perceived bigger team an easier ride of things, it'll take a monumental effort for Scotland to change his mind first 15 minutes. After 15 mins we'll know whos going to win the match, as Joubert will have decided lol

Well, the first quarter-final was very well reffed.
Let's hope the other 3 games are the same.

I thought the first 2 penaltys v Wales were harsh as North was on his feet for the turnover. That aside no problems

Re: Quarter Finals - Officials
In Barnes favour - he is English and the competition is held in England so it would give the home Union some comfort to have that representation in the final.
He is a poor referee though and would be the last referee the All Blacks would want to see blowing the whistle.

Owens is the best ref in the World (worst in the Pro12 )
Seriously, he is the best but you have to be able to play fast to keep up with him....as France found out!!

So Wayne Barnes, Glen Jackson, Craig Joubert - world rugby are running out of refs who wouldn't get a frosty reception while reffing Scotland!

He officiated the last world cup against Argentina.
Another coulda, shoulda, woulda, but Contepomi was incredibly offside to charge down Park's drop goal!

Re: Quarter Finals - Officials
So where is Owens for the semi-final appointments?
He's resting for the final I'm guessing.
"France's Jerome Garcès will whistle New Zealand's semifinal against South Africa at Twickenham (Sunday, 4am NZ time). He will be joined on the line by compatriot Romain Poite and Ireland's John Lacey with George Ayoub of Australia being the television match official.
England's Wayne Barnes will control Australia against Argentina the next day.
His assistant referees will be Jaco Peyper of South Africa and Ireland's George Clancy. New Zealand's Ben Skeen will be TMO."

I don't want Owens to get the final. Getting a bit fed up of the rentaquote mentality that follows him now.
