Drop goals Empty Drop goals

Post by lorus59 Sun 18 Oct 2015, 4:25 am

Now, it has to be said I am not a huge rugby fan or expert but I love watching big test matches and the World Cup. The one thing that I really don't like is drop goals. I think they should be removed from the rules. I think it's a cheap get out of jail card. I know England fans will say they won the world cup with one but to me that was a pretty shallow way to win it. Remember the quarter final back in 1999, when De Beer kicked 5 of them against England. I hated them back then and I still do.

Laugh Laugh Laugh Laugh
Remember John Smit missing a drop goal by a pole's length in the 2007 Super 14 final. Must have been from about 25 metres as well.

Wonder what's been up with the DGs this RWC? Only three or four successful, and I've Nicolas Sanchez, a kicker par excellence and Pat Lambie, himself an accomplished kicker put up some horrid attempts in the QFs. Okay they were both probably from 40 metres, but they fell 10-15 metres short!

I think the international game has moved on from the last two WCs which were much more conservative territory-focused affairs. Teams seem more confident in their abilities to get over for a try than just settling for 3 when they get into the oppo half.

Same message as ever. Until significant numbers of games are decided by drop goals there is no reason to touch them

There is nothing worse in Rugby than losing by a Drop Goal.
Conversely, it rocks to slot one from 30 or 35 to put the opposition out of their misery in the last few minutes.

Drop Goals are a thing of beauty, unique to Rugby.

You used to see Rob Kearney hit the occasional one from 45 metres out, you'd think "What the hell are you doing?! Oh, fair enough.."
