The 3 most iconic views in golf
Turned over my Pebble beach 2011 calendar yesterday and June's picture just gladens the heart. It's looking down the 9th fairway toward the green on a sunny day with the 10th stretching out Beyond back left and the pacific breakers rolling onto Carmel Beach from the right. A jawdropping gorgeous view but not dare I say one of the most iconic views in golf. The tricky little 7th is probably the most iconic view at Pebble And would probably be 4th in the list below.
For me the top 3 iconic/most photographed views in golf would be.
1. The 18th at St Andrews (with the R&A clubhouse & Hamilton Place in the background and Swilken Bridge foreground.
2. The 12th at Augusta, Golden Bell
3. The 9th/10th at Turnberry with the lighthouse and Ailsa Craig in the background.
What immediately springs to your mind as the top 3 iconic views in golf?

Re: The 3 most iconic views in golf
I agree with the first one:
1) 18th St Andrews
2) 11th at Vale De Lobo (over the cliffs) on the Royal.

There is a loo to the right of the tee, I don't know whether you use it before or after you hit your tee-shot.
3) 10th at the Belfry. Seve going straight at the hole from the tee.

Re: The 3 most iconic views in golf
1. Without any shadow of doubt, the 18th at St Andrews
2. 12th at Augusta
After that there are a lot of images vying for 3rd spot...
-View down the 13th fairway at Augusta, with the creek down the left and in front of the green.
-17th at St Andrews, the hotel, the bunker eating into the green and the road over the back.
-16th green at Augusta viewed from the back and looking down towards the water.
- Turnbery lighthouse.
-18th green at Carnoustie, with the clubhouse behind the green, and van de Velde standing in the burn in front.
-17th at Stadium course Sawgrass.
-18th green at Muirfield with the clubhouse behind it.

Re: The 3 most iconic views in golf
18th at St Andrews and 12th at Augusta definitely, not sure about the 3rd choice though. I guess a lot depends on where you come from. In the UK we have Turnberry, Royal County Down 9th fairway, 18th on the Belfry, Birkdale clubhouse and many more.
Our cousins across the pond however would most likely go for images of Pebble Beach, Sawgrass, the Church Pews bunker at Oakmont, Shinnecock etc.
The Japs might have something different altogether

Are you suggesting that in order to fully appreciate a great view we have to consider it from a Japs Eye perspective?

Not exactly a d4s cousin, but I'd add the par 3 16th at Cypress Point and the view down the fairway of the 18th at Harbour Town with the lighthouse in the distance to assorted views of Pebble and Augusta. And great call on the Church Pew bunkers at Oakmont.

Re: The 3 most iconic views in golf
pretty sure we had this thread on the old 606 site, and so will post the same views again:

2. http://goinglikesixty.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/morgan_bootay.jpg
3. http://www.publicpropertyuk.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Golf-hole.jpg
However there is a new contender for iconic hole:

Re: The 3 most iconic views in golf
Jas
I would not disagree with your choice.
There are many better views of a golf course, my favourite is a late summer evening photo of Cruden Bay GC showing all the humps, hollows and shadows of a setting sun.
There is also a fabulous misty early morning painting of Puttenham GC by Ron McGill. It is of a walk on the Pilgrims Way between two holes so there is no 'golf' involved other than for those who know where it is.
Finally there is an excellent painting by Jonathan Warrender of the 6th green on Gullane No1, very different from the hundreds of paintings and photos taken 20 yards away on the iconic 7th tee.
