Also the major news from the weekend was Bradley Smith will leave the Tech3 Yamaha team and join the factory KTM team for 2017-18.

Re: 2016 MotoGP season - GarrySA where you at fella?
An interesting start to the season, three different makes on the podium. One thing was evident the Ducatis seemed to have the edge on top speed. It's too early to predict a winner but Lorenzo seems to be back to winning form, even when he lost the lead to Iannone he soon fought for and won it back. Rossi was only off the podium once last season but already he has equalled that. Is he going to be able to hack it with these up and coming youngsters? only time will tell.Pedrosa will improve as the season goes on.If Stoner had decided to make a comeback on the Ducati, how would he have fared?

Result from Sunday's Argentine Grand Prix.
Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez powered to victory for his 50th Grand Prix victory. Yamaha's Valentino Rossi was second. And Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa inherited third after both factory Ducati's crashed into each other on the final lap. Reigning champion Jorge Lorenzo crashed out.

You'll have to start watching the races Jermaine.Argentina was quite an eventful meeting, first Lorenzo came to grief and was unable to continue, then one corner from the finish Rossi and Pedrosa were gifted podium places when the Ducati team were taken out by a mistake from Iannone robbing them of a certain second and third result. Rossi and Marquez were pretty evenly matched until the change over then Marquez definitely had the upper hand and powered away to win comfortably.

Re: 2016 MotoGP season - GarrySA where you at fella?
So the weekend just gone was round 3 of the 2016 World championship at the Grand Prix of the Americas(CoTA).
Marc Marquez continued his love affair with Texas as he claimed his fourth consecutive pole and race win, as of 2016 Marquez has won every race in Texas 2013-16. Jorge Lorenzo was second. Andrea Iannone, under massive pressure after taking out his teammate in the previous round rounded of the podium, in a race that could've saved his Ducati career. Valentino Rossi crashed out from second place early on. Whilst Andrea Dovizioso's luck showed on signs of improving after he was poleaxed by Dani Pedrosa on lap 2.
There's big rumors that Ducati are desperately trying to get Casey Stoner to return for 2017, should the brilliant Australian decline, Ducati have tabled a massive offer for Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo.

Incredible decision by Jorge Lorenzo to ditch the factory Yamaha team for the factory Ducati team. Whilst Ducati have made huge strides forward, the bike still needs an aggressive riding style eg Dovizioso and Iannone. Lorenzo are all his skill isn't an aggressive rider.
I guess Yahama will be looking over Pol Espargaro(who's always been contracted to Yamaha) or the Suzuki whiz kid Maverick Vinales.

Apparently Yamaha are talking to Vinales who has conveniently got a new manager. Stoner has been doing a lot of Ducati testing so id assume Ducati pretty confident for next year.

Would be incredibly harsh on both Dovizioso and Iannone if both are sacked. Both are very good riders. If King Casey returns and can return to the form and speed he had during his peak, he'll destroy Lorenzo.Fernando wrote:Apparently Yamaha are talking to Vinales who has conveniently got a new manager. Personally i can see Pedrosa coming to the end of his stay at Honda he's been very poor the last couple of season so Dovi could go there. I imagine there will be some tech3 rides and Vinales' Suzuki ride up for grabs.

Re: 2016 MotoGP season - GarrySA where you at fella?
Can't see Dovizioso going back to Repsol anytime soon considering they sacked him a few ago despite beating Pedrosa in the championship standings. Also Dovizioso can consider himself harshly treated as he had a firm offer from Yamaha in 2013 to partner Lorenzo, but Rossi took he seat when he quit Ducati.
It's tragic that the magnificent and wonderful Marco Simoncelli is no longer with us, as he would've been at Repsol going wheel to wheel with Marquez.
Should Repsol ditch Pedrosa(he had a firm offer from Suzuki with a considerable large wage packet) I'd like to see someone like Jack Miller on a factory Honda. The boy has serious talent.

Well it appears Marc Marquez has been contacted by Ducati & denied Yamaha links...That would be highly interesting...as his contract ends at Honda this year i believe.

Life in the old dog yet as the Doctor Valentino Rossi dominated the Spanish GP in Jerez. Rossi rolled back the years and showed he's still in the hunt for that elusive 10th world championship.
Yamaha have made Rossi a clear number 1 rider since Lorenzo's announcement to join Ducati.
Poor old Dovizioso suffered his fourth consecutive DNF.

Re: 2016 MotoGP season - GarrySA where you at fella?
I watched the race which was pretty uneventful. After half a lap Rossi had got in front of Lorenzo who was followed by Marquez and Pedrosa and that's how it stayed for the whole race with nobody looking like they would get past the rider in front.A faultless display from Rossi. Are Yamaha helping Rossi more than Lorenzo now that he has signed up with Ducati? only time will tell.It was obvious he wasn't going to catch Rossi and the Ducati team showed no sign of being a threat, but the season has only just started.

Jorge Lorenzo absolutely dominated the whole weekend at Le Mans and cruised to a very easy victory. Behind him they was all sort of carnage. Both factory Ducati's crashed out and both dovizioso and Iannone are likely to be looking for a new team in 2017. Marc Marquez also dropped it but still managed to get back into the points. Perhaps more significantly Suzuki made the podium with youngster Maverick Vinales registering his first podium in the premier class.

Re: 2016 MotoGP season - GarrySA where you at fella?
Interesting subplot came out of Le Mans that Maverick Vinales rejected a move to the factory Yamaha team, instead favouring remaining at Suzuki.
Reports in Spain suggest Yamaha have signed Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa.
Ducati have lost their patience with both Dovi and Iannone with the consistent crashes. Reports claims Danilo Petrucci will partner Lorenzo. Petrucci was mighty impressive in Le Mans securing eighth despite racing with a broken right hand.

I'm failing to see the logic behind Yamaha still having Pol Espagaro under contract when they sign Vinales to replace Lorenzo

Re: 2016 MotoGP season - GarrySA where you at fella?
Slight tangent but MotoGP legend and 2006 MotoGP world champion Nicky Hayden won a world superbike race this weekend just gone. It's staggering to think it was a decade ago when the Kentucky Kid last won a race. I'm personally delighted for Nicky as he was pretty much unceremoniously turfed out of MotoGP. As a world champion he deserved more respect.

Andrea Iannone will join the factory Suzuki team for 2017-18. Could end up a good move as Suzuki seem to be making real progress with their bike.

Valentino Rossi storms to pole position at Mugello. His first pole at his home race since 2008, also the last time he won the home race.

Re: 2016 MotoGP season - GarrySA where you at fella?
Best race of the season at Mugello especially the last lap. A pity Rossi's bike blew up early on, he and Lorenzo were having a great battle. Instead it was left to Marquez to provide the fireworks which he did in spades passing Lorenzo on the last corner only for Lorenzo to make an almighty effort and cross the line a wheel in front with Iannone completing the podium. Great stuff still anyone's title.

Agree with RapidRingsRoad but far the best race of 2016. Desperately disappointing for Valentino Rossi to suffer an engine failure at his home race, but on a side note Yamaha suffered to M1 engine failures within the weekend(Lorenzo suffered one during warm up) when has that ever happened before?
The Lorenzo-Marquez last lap duel was fantastic and I thought Marquez had snared the win, but Lorenzo showed the champions class.
Great result for Andrea Iannone, what better way to stick one up to the team that sacks you, get on the podium ahead of Dovi.

Valentino Rossi won the Catalan GP after a fantastic duel with Marc Marquez in Barcelona. It was a fitting race in the memory of the late Luis Salom. Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa rounded off the podium positions.
It wasn't such a good race for reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo after he was torpedoed by Andrea Iannone and both men failed to finish.
Marc Marquez has now taken over at the top of the standings and Valentino Rossi is back within a race win of the top spot.

An incredible race at Assen saw Australian Jack Miller win his first race in the premier class. In weather in can only describe as Biblical, youngster Miller showed what he has to offer in the future. A fearless ride from that Aussie when all the big names where struggling or crashing out.
The race was of two halves as the heavy rain forced a stoppage after 14 laps. Once the rain eased up the riders came back for a 12 lap sprint.
It was a bad day for the Italians in the field as Petrucci, Dovi and Rossi all crashed out whilst in the lead of various points of the race. Marquez seemed to be master of the conditions until he was passed by Miller 8 laps from the end. Marquez was happy to secure second and consolidate his lead in the championship. It was another poor day in the rain for Lorenzo as he finished down in tenth.
This race could be the point at the end of the season where it's won and lost. Marquez looks like the man to beat.

Re: 2016 MotoGP season - GarrySA where you at fella?
Scott Redding just failed to get on the podium as Dovi managed to get past him metres from the finish. Good thinking from Marquez's crew to fit slicks and brilliant riding from Marquez to get another top spot on the podium. Only halfway through the season though and any thing can happen.

Aside from Marquez domination, was a decent race

Ducati's five and a half year wait to get back on to the top step of the podium is finally over. Andrea Iannone won his maiden MotoGP race as he lead home a Ducati 1-2 at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. I wonder if Ducati are regretting sacking Crazy Joe...

Great Britain's 35 year itch is finally over after Cal Crutchlow powered to victory at a damp Brno at the Czech GP. It was the first victory by a Brit in the premier class since the legendary Barry Sheene won the Swedish GP back in 1981. I for one am delighted for Crutchlow, he's suffered a lot of back luck and should've been on a factory bike along time ago. With this victory he could one day secure a seat at Repsol Honda. Valentino Rossi battled back to secure second and championship leader Marc Marquez charged through the pack to limit his losses with third place. Ducati and Andrea Iannone looked set to win back to back races until his tyres ran out of grip on a drying track. Most concerning will be the dreadful performance of reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo, it's no secret that he doesn't fancy racing in the wet. But today showed him up big time as he finished 17th and a lap down after pitting twice. All good and well winning from pole position, but as a real world champion you've got to show some balls during the difficult times - Lorenzo never does...
Notable mentions go to Avintia Racing duo Loris Baz and Hector Barbera with a 4th and 5th place finish respectively on the satellite Ducati's.

Re: 2016 MotoGP season - GarrySA where you at fella?
Good to see new faces on the podium,Crutchlow well deserved his first top spot.I know some riders don't perform as well in the wet but Lorenzo can't expect to hang on to the title if he can't handle the wet track. I remember the late John Hartle rubbing his hands together when it started to rain while the riders were on the starting grid he was a master in the rain. With the next round round at Silverstone it's at least 50 50 chance of it being wet so don't expect Lorenzo to do well. The new steady Marquez is going to take some catching even though Hondas aren't the fastest bikes on the track anymore.

Re: 2016 MotoGP season - GarrySA where you at fella?
The brilliant Cal Crutchlow stormed to a sensational pole position at the British GP, the masterful Brit was near enough a half second faster than Valentino Rossi. If Crutchlow doesn't get a factory Honda ride within the new 12 months it would be very disappointing. I feel Crutchlow has a world championship within him in the correct machinery.

It was a dry race Jermaine so Lorenzo can't blame the weather.Vinales was just to fast for the rest and once in front was never troubled.Crutchlow was brilliant and deserved his spot on the podium. The Maniac did his usual thing and slid off whilst in second spot and Marquez lost his chance of a podium finish when he left the track for the second time in the race.

I was coming off a massive bender, and the vision was pretty impaired I think the bartender was a little peed off with me and was humouring merapidringsroad wrote:It was a dry race Jermaine so Lorenzo can't blame the weather.Vinales was just to fast for the rest and once in front was never troubled.Crutchlow was brilliant and deserved his spot on the podium. The Maniac did his usual thing and slid off whilst in second spot and Marquez lost his chance of a podium finish when he left the track for the second time in the race.

Weekend just passed was the San Marino GP at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Before I get on the race details, in my opinion the most important event of this weekend was the official retiring of Marco Simoncelli's iconic #58. Fitting it was at the charming Italian's home circuit. I still can't believe he's been gone for nearly 4 years now

Pedrosa remains the enigma that on his day he is peerless yet his confidence is brittle and his slumps are alarmingly bad. Valentino Rossi secured second place at his home circuit and his out going teammate Jorge Lorenzo came home third(Lorenzo had set the lap record during qualifying). With 5 races remaining Marc Marquez has a 43 point lead. The interesting part of that is that Honda's bike development isn't really yielding much improvement any more and Yamaha have the fastest bike. But without a Marquez DNF, the chasing pack have no hope

Great win for Dani Pedrosa,I enjoyed his aggressive pass of Rossi and his face at the interviews after was classic "what am I doing here listening to those two prattling on,I won the race so get over it".No mention of Iannone at all,was he injured after his fall the week before or have Ducati tired of his falling off and stopped providing a bike for him?

Re: 2016 MotoGP season - GarrySA where you at fella?
Marquez must now be odds on to take the title after his latest win in Spain. He didn't do it the easy way after an early mistake dropped him back to 5th after he took chances before his tyres had warmed up but fought his way back passing the Vinales and the two Yamaha riders in the process. Lorenzo won the Yamaha battle which leaves Marquez 52 points in front so he can have two DNFs and still lead by two points.Pedrosa had a bit of trouble with grip and only managed a 6th spot from starting from 7th on the grid.Japan and Malaysia next month but it doesn't look like it's going to go to the wire unlike last year.

This championship win will be a different type of victory for Marc Marquez. in 2013 he was the young exciting speed freak. 2014 he basically destroyed all comers. Now in 2016 Marquez's consistency has won him the championship. All the marks of a truly great, multi dimensional rider.

2017 likely to be Valentino Rossi's final opportunity to land that elusive 10th world championship. Yamaha undoubtedly have the fastest bike at present and with Lorenzo off to Ducati that's one rival out of the way. Marquez unquestionably the favourite but Rossi is the best bet to beat the Spanish sensation

Dani Pedrosa suffered a broken shoulder in Motegi and as such missed the Japanese GP and also missing this weekends Australian GP at Philip Island. Former MotoGP champion Nicky Hayden will ride the second Honda in Australia. Delighted to see the #69 back on a Repsol
