Blackwell wakes from coma
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/boxing/35962221
A little positive news story.
Blackwell woke from the induced coma on Saturday and by Sunday was talking to family and friends at his bedside, promoters Hennessey Sports have said.
Get better soon champ.

Brilliant news, just saw this on the BBC
Hope he gets better soon and can continue his career, if he so chooses.
They didn't mention any lasting effects either.

Seems the bleed was on his skull, not brain, which should make a substantial difference to his recovery.

Yes that's a much better situation from what I understand Toppy. Good to see he's on the road to recovery.
I hope David Haye's offer still stands.

That's a positive bit of news after what must have been a very scary week or so for the family.
Let's hope this scary episode sees people wise up a little regarding calling boxers 'bums' and 'duckers'. This can happen to anyone who steps in a ring.

Think Ducker is still ok. I.e. when they've clearly avoided someone and fought an alternative.
When it means chicken or coward or gutless etc then it is shameful.

Re: Blackwell wakes from coma
90% of the boxers in the world will fight whoever is put in front of them, in my opinion.
Reality is, a lot of them don't have much of a say and have people whispering in their ears telling them who to fight, what's best for them etc. You've got to remember, many come from poor backgrounds and aren't the most career savvy.
The sport we follow is messy, dangerous and rarely in the best interest of the ones taking the shots. But that's the world we live in.

Re: Blackwell wakes from coma
Boxrec says Blackwell's career is over due to this. Is that definitely the case?

The chances of him being given a licence to fight in the UK are nil and rightfully so.

Great news and hope his recovery continues. Any money raised by Haye should tide him over for a bit until he decides what to do next. Wonder what provisions the BBBC make for fighters whose careers are ended prematurely

More to life than boxing. He deserves to follow a career less punishing.

Yeah - once you get something like that, you're not getting a licence again. No doctor will clear you to fight, it's too big of a risk.
The bleed on the skull means that there's been a breach in the membrane somewhere. This means if he continues to fight, he's at a much higher risk of his brain swelling through thinner/damaged membrane walls. I'm no doctor, but I had something on a smaller scale and I'm not allowed to even light spar any more.

Suspect it's great news for his personal health, i.e. can make a full recovery, but his career is over - too much risk as per Jabby's comments.

This was reported from the start and induced into a coma for safety measures only.
Although, a head injury is always serious, the media blew it up beyond what it should of been especially with the historical Eubank story line.
Insiders always said he'll be fine but will never be able to fight again because he has suffered a brain injury.
I wish him all the bets and hope the boxing worlkd supports him as they have.

Fantastic that he is now doing well. Met and interviewed him the other month and really nice guy. Was a tremendous fight.

I've said it a lot when talking about Nick around but he can still pursue a career in boxing, just not the actual fighting. It's great he'll soon be up and about and I hope he can do something that continues to make him happy

Go one of two ways....He can believe he has been given a second chance and embrace life in a positive way...Or he can wallow in pity at the thought of all his hopes and dreams being taken away so publicly and painfully....

Blackwell has stated that he will not fight again but would like to remain in the sport in some capacity.
Be good to see him as a pundit.

Re: Blackwell wakes from coma
I like how his retirement announcement just came in the form of a reply to a fan. Proper low key, no fuss.
Reminds me of when Arcade Fire announced their new album replying to a tweet.
