I hope their not too rough on him to be honest, stupid mistake, but he shouldn't be made to carry the can for racism in rugby. A talking too and a general understanding across the rugby world that were not allowed to use the G word on the field. Sadly I think for World Rugby to take it this far I think something might happen.
I do wonder whether World Rugby might be looking to punish England in general, to be fair England got away with quite a bit during the 6 Nations, Mike Brown injuring the Irish player via stamping for example, and the fore arm smash. England pretty much got all the 50/50 disciplinary calls in their favor and more should of been done on some of those issues, so maybe Marler is going to take the rap for everything.

Are you being ironic Madge, that you're fed up of this dragging on but you're starting a new topic? Can't you just google it or look on the Beeb or Skysports.com?

The panel have not finished the post luncheon drinks yet. Once that is done they will start to listen to evidence.

Re: Any News on the Marler case yet?
I had to laugh at this. Welsh boxer Billy Joe Saunders said in response to the gypsy boy comment “Now other people might think twice about using the term in an offensive way. There is no room for any racism is sport; especially at the standard that he is playing. I was talking about it on the phone to my friend Tyson Fury last night and we are both disgusted by it.”
Presumably this is the same Tyson Fury who said all gays should be killed, ‘a woman’s best place is in the kitchen and on her back’ and threatened to have reporter Oliver Holt beaten up for accurately reporting his homophobic and sexist rants.

Not sure if your a wum but the reffing overall wasn't great. Eg. Tomas Francis incident on Cole showed lack of decision making by officials & assisted in giving Wales a sniff of a chance.

So are you saying that because he is English, he must be a racist?
Don't think you should tar each English man with the same brush. ok.

This is the same WalesOnline who did the article with Rob Evans who said '...Samson Lee, this gypsy.'? Curious how when a Welsh player calls him a gypsy it's a bit of banter but when an English player says the same it's much more serious. I hope the panel ask him why he said what he said, they will be duty-bound to find out who used the bigoted language towards him.

The same ban as Pocock got for dangerous play, and a fine to boot. It could have been worse, but this hardly reflects well on the game's administrators for fairness and consistency.
I presume the panel will now spend the rest of the evening looking for alcoholic drinks in a brewery.

Re: Any News on the Marler case yet?
Think it's fair enough. If the 6N's had acted appropriately then this would largely be forgotten about by now.
The World Rugby statement says:
The charge was admitted in its entirety by Marler and upheld by the independent judicial panel comprising Terry Willis (chair, Australia), Jean-Noël Couraud (France) and Alan Hudson (Canada).
Following a full review of all the evidence, including a detailed analysis of the broadcast feed, referee microphone, statements and submissions on behalf of Marler by his representative Mark Milliken-Smith QC, and World Rugby, the committee found:
- That Marler had used unsporting and discriminatory language towards Lee
- That by his actions, Marler had breached World Rugby Regulation 20 and the code of conduct and brought the game into disrepute
- That Marler was proactive in apologising to Lee at half-time during the match and that he subsequently issued a public and unreserved apology for his comments
- That Marler is a person of good character and had no similar misconduct charges

In respect of the sanction, pursuant to Regulation 20.10.1 (c), the committee determined the breach was serious and imposed a two-match suspension, and pursuant to Regulation 20.10.1 (b) that Marler pay a fine in the form of a donation of £20,000 to a suitable equality charity in the UK.
Marler is therefore free to resume playing on 18 April and he has a right of appeal within seven days of notification of the full written decision.

Can't really argue with the decision, though arguably the 2 match ban hits his club harder than Marler. What message does it send out to other players? Look over your shoulder in future to make sure there are no microphones nearby.
I can't help but think that Lee will get worse remarks on the field in the coming months from anyone wanting a reaction, all the attention this has attracted won't do him any favours.

having taken the case on, they werent going to let marler off. i have no problem with this outcome at all. GBP20k seems a bit steep though if hes only on 150k. seems like footballers get fined similar amounts while their pay is several million.
samuels in cricket world cup lost 1/3 of his match fee.
i didnt know rugby did fines even.

I do agree it does seem a bit over the top. But i guess it had to be some thing like this to make it all worth wile World Rugby stepping in like they did.
So now the bench mark is set Lets see if the next time some thing ;like this happens. Or a player gets reprimanded for eye gouging he get the same penalty as Marler as just been given.

Re: Any News on the Marler case yet?
2 week ban seems about right, i.e. lower-end for the offence with a reduction for good character and contrition (the apology once he'd realised he'd gone too far). Don't think anyone can complain too much, and had the 6N committee gone for this originally it would all have been over by now, so they're most to blame for it dragging on unnecessarily.
20k fine seems a bit steep given his reported salary, if it's 150k that's roughly 7 weeks wages. Don't mind the gesture (fine being given to an equality charity), but 5-10k would have been sufficient IMO.

I did read that 20k was 1/5 of his total fee for the 6N? If so, it's effectively one match fee. Fair enough to me. If that figure is incorrect, a bit over the top. Agree with the rest though, this is a fair enough punishment.

And that took SIX HOURS to work out? What the Frak people?
I guess they probably had to spend a few hours googling gypsies, then googling caravans, then a stiff drink after all that horrible business. Then lunch...
Actually 6 hours seems pretty quick!

The google search brought up some saucy-looking gypsy girls which resulted in 3 hours of sitting around the screen making dirty old man noises before deciding that Marler had acted in a derogatory fashion.yappysnap wrote:And that took SIX HOURS to work out? What the Frak people?

was it over lunch? As a Frenchman, six hours for a business lunch seems distinctly short...
@JD you could be right, forgot that Marler will have got match fees/bonuses for playing for England on top of his Quins salary. Losing his match fee/bonus seems about right then.

Yep. £15k per match, plus a bonus for anyone involved in 5 wins, to take it to £115k for the 6N. Quite incredible in comparison to their salaries.JDizzle wrote:I did read that 20k was 1/5 of his total fee for the 6N? If so, it's effectively one match fee. Fair enough to me. A player who plays a full international schedule will roughly double their club salary, maybe a bit more with win bonuses. The fine actually seems pretty well judged to me - in effect it's the France game and his 6N bonus.
I'd probably have been OK about the ban as well, if it wasn't for Pocock's 2 weeks on the same day. We're used to seeing the entry level ban halved for good character and remorse, but I think Marler's actions went beyond the usual - apologising in the middle of the match is not something you often see - and to end up with the same ban as someone who did something truly dangerous just seems wrong.
That said, it's probably more that Pocock's ban is ridiculously short for the offence rather than that Marler's is too long.
At least it's over.
