I second that. Not quite of the calibre of Thread X, but as I always say to Weegies, nothing wrong with runner-up.

Sorry to hear about Mike Blair retiring. Great scrum-half and his influence has definitely been passed on to Henry P. He did very well for us esp. during the RWC when hotter heads were boiling over. Is he The Toonster's successor in August 17 ?
Think he will get a huge ovation next Friday at Scotstoun as he became instantly popular with his attitude and all round good guyness !

I would be very happy if he turns to punditry too.
His columns for the BBC talk a lot of sense.
Juxtaposing Guscott and Jiffys' streams of drivel nicely.

Its not people from Edinburgh or the rugby team that I find so irksome. Its their dull, boring supporters (yes all 200 of them - is there that many ?). They remind me of care home residents let out for the day. Actually care home residents are a lot more animated. Anyway enjoy the 1872 Cup while you have it as you wont have much else to defend esp with only 11 home games nest season. Oh and enjoy the Challenge Cup next season - Siberia is supposed to be lovely in November.

I don't get the 'only 11 home games' comment, but does that include the games Glasgow will have to move to Murrayfield due to Scotstoun being flooded?

He's back
It's like Father Jack being asked if he's finished with that glass of whisky.
Besides The Luvvies on here are neither dull nor boring, as long as one is fascinated by the menu in Tom English's gaff and the dreadful shortage of domestic staff willing to pay reasonable amount for ironing one's Torygraph every morning.

Oh yes Tom English, isn't he the writer chappie?
Ah well, when we come through for the Final you can pour me a pint of Kahlua and Grenadine (or whatever it is you'rebuying drinking that week) and dip our Farley's rusks in it while you explain the finer points of high living and I sing , "When you're shaping to pass and you're knocked on your arse...That's Simone"

I'm back in sunny Edinburgh! After 26 hours of travelling home Brazil.
It is indeed sad about Mike Blair, however I am happy about him staying on at Glasgow. I reckon he'll be a class backs coach. And with Henners, Hart and Price fit he wasn't going to really play all that often so I think his role wont change too much. It's wonderful to see those three have such an astute mentor.
The Murrayfield Library is certainly a place where one has to B.Y.O.B.
Bring Your Own Banter
As for Tom Kitchen's burgers.... All I can say is; Burger Meats Bun.

On saying that Burger Meats Bun was pretentious and overpriced. So it will do quite well there.

I have one question. What the hell happened to BMB? Been there twice since it opened in Edinburgh and had a foodgasm each time. However, there beer list is all super hoppy uber-cool hipster beer that really wasn't so great. Delicious burgers, from what i remember!

Great thread Simply Mesmeric Try.
Edinburgh really seems to have gone all out on the burger places recently, with BMB, byron burgers, 5 guys, Boozy cow and Belted Burger all opened relatively recently.
Anyway, shame to hear about Blair retiring, but better to put his health ahead of playing a few extra games. Hopefully he learns a lot from toonie and goes on to have a great coaching career. He certainly seems to know what he's talking about so if he can translate that to coaching he should make a decent fist of it. I suspect he may replace Gregor down the line, but I would much rather he came back to Edinburgh, if he's any good, if not Glasgow can keep him.

Not to mention Wannaburger, Burger (*2), a Burger Meats Bun, "Just burgers and beers" and many many more.
Bread meats Bread is the best one of the new bunch imho. And it's very close to my office which is bad for the waistline., It's hardly "uber-cool hipster beer" either Mesmeric - pretty sure their house lager is universal pisswater with an "own" label stuck on it, Williams Bros is nice but hardly hipster - it's by far the only good thing to come out of Alloa, then they have a Brewdog beer (also hardly hipster, as much as they'd like you to think it) - no? I'm saying this from a position as a massive fan of super hoppy uber-cool hipster beers...
Still can't beat the Cambridge bar though!

Isn't that what you said about Al Kellock just before he lifted the Pro 12 trophy?
Just to clarify; that's lifted in the Nouveau Glasgeau style, as in "We've won it's ours", not in the traditional "Some thieving bugger's lifted my telly/microwave/ portable goods of your choice" style.

Since we're talking mince about burger joints with silly names: my favourite is Burgers And Cocktails in Brighton. It does what it says on the label. The burgers were tasty and the Happy Hour was from 5 till 11. I can recommend the Flaming Cocktails. The only downside is there's a Los Iguanas across the road so Fes would never make it.
Speaking of things Flaming; was anyone at the Flaming Groovies gig in Sauchiehall St last night? I only ask because Tom the Guitar's band were the support act and I was wondering how they got on.

There's also a place down a close off the Royal Mile called "Wings" - they serve about 100 varieties of chicken wings. Pretty sure they do buckfast ones for our Weegie brethren to feel welcome.

If you don't mind paying £14 for a burger (and a fiver for a pint) then I would thoroughly recommend Scran and Scalllie in FES' home town as serving the best burger I've ever had.
I thought a burger was just a burger but I was wrong - this took things to a whole new level!

Can't say I've been to any of them, but I'm reliably informed Belted Burger is pretty good, mate of mine (former TH) has been there something like 5 times in the last couple of weeks. Williams Bros do have a few decent beers. They are also on offer in High Spirits in Dalry, £1.69 a bottle, if anyone in that neck of the woods is interested.

I've been tempted by Scran and Scallie but just never really taken by the menu - if I want posh grub then I'd rather have posh choices rather than an "artisan steak pie".
Give my the foie gras terrine any day!
On the other hand, my local does £1.99 doubles and you can get a steak and chips for £7. I would certainly not vouch for the quality, and would never set foot in there past about 8pm. My other local closed down not too long ago after a drugs bust...
Spoons - Aldi usually do a good price on Williams Bros. £1.50 for any of them, I believe.

No RDW, it's comments like this that don't help the Luvvie stereotype.
BTW, did Mr Mesmeric Try really have a Brazilian that took 12 hours? Is he really Archie Gemmill?

There is a good burger place in Cardiff called The Grazing Shed, I went there to drown my sorrows after the 6N match this year, very nice burgers and some suitably mental combinations of toppings

I'd been trying to come up with a witty Brazilian remark for a while but am not quite smooth enough...

Bless me Father for I have sinned, (and take your hand out of my trousers, I'm not really an altar boy) but I have been promiscuous and posted on another site.
However, on the Glasgow Warriors Index I did mention that as far as a nickname for Leonardo Sarto goes, when he arrives, since we have a Simone (Favarro) we should call him Jean Paul. They'd make a good couple; in a Platonic way of course.
However, one of the posters just pointed out that they should be called the Weegie Luigis.

The best burger I've ever had was made by me. Some thinly sliced ribeye from the butchers chopped into small cubes (not minced). Mixed with some finely chopped shallots, a few panko breadcrumbs, an egg to bind and lightly seasoned with salt and pepper. Then cooked on a BBQ.
As for burgers out and about, Hollyrood 9A used to do the best one I'd had but I've not eaten there for a year or so. Great beer too without being filled with master baters.

Holyrood 9A is a great shout - very good burgers, although their 'death sauce' didn't kill me so I was quite disappointed with it. Was pretty spicy though!

Moving on from burgers to something a little more refined... the best steak I've had was at Iris on Thistle Street in Edinburgh. Really simple, lots of pepper and a bit of lemon juice. All topped off with some sweet potato fries and a nice fruity Pinotage.
I booked my table there four months early for me and Lady Bru on the day of the Pro12 final. Come and join if you're about!

For steaks I highly recommend Los Argentinos on Preston street, or McKirdies on Morrison Streeet.

I can't make up my mind which is more optimistic: your faith that the Warriors will make yet another Pro 12 final, OR your ungrounded optimism that the Hagia Sophia will continue to tolerate your "foibles".
p.s. If this Iris bird does proper chips and the steak costs less than your weight in Doubloons then I'm in. No nippy sauce though, I don't do foreign food.

Iris is one of my favourite Edinburgh restaurants. The swordfish is awesome there!
Kyloe does the best steak in Edinburgh I reckon.

Kylie does steaks too.
Kylie and Iris making me steak and chips. Now that's what I call a threesome.
