Verdict
Djokovic v Murray : RG Final 2016
First topic message reminder :
Let's have a thread to discuss the final in advance.
And a poll for fun. Djokovic is obvious favourite so I've structured the poll in a way to make it more interesting. Not convinced by predicting set scores, you may as well try and predict the toss of a coin, so how about we try it in a different way.
If anyone wants to put a longer preview great. In the mean time a few thoughts.
Murray win:
First Brit to win RG for 80 years
Real opportunity to do career slam as would just leave AO which is winnable in the next few years
Djokovic win:
Career slam.
Non-calendar year slam - no-one has won 4 in a row since Laver
Novak enters the GOAT conversation

Couldn't watch final but what performance again to lose the first set and comeback. Finally, he will get credit he richly deserves. Watching Novak since he was teenager and now having him slayed his final demon all I can say is if this guy becomes president of Serbia it would not be surprising. A sickly asthmatic with a record for withdrawals has turned himself into the most dominant champ in the modern era

Have to get home for mom's birthday. No choice, mom needs her baby boy at her birthday dinner and I am the favorite of all 4, how could I not be

I think I may have been one of the two people who got the poll right (not 100% certain), but I did not expect that Nole would need four sets and still limit Andy to under 15 games.

Commiserations to the Murray fans on here. He has made huge progress on clay and all credit to him. What I really admire about Murray other than his tennis of course is his determination and his ability to keep bouncing back from these slam final defeats.
The guy has so much drive to succeed, for me I think he is just too hard on himself. He has the game without question but his tendency to have lapses at crucial times cost him dear. First game of 2nd set comes to mind, had he gone for the jugular and broke at the start of the 2nd set, who knows what might have happened.
I still expect to see Murray win another slam or two, he is simple too good a player not to and he would certainly deserve it

Could do with a little help from the rest of the field - must be some sort of record to play 10 GS finals against two guys who between them have about 30 GS titles. Where are the finals against (say) Berdych or Nishi?
Anyway, congratulations to Novak, who at least had to play well to get on top after a ropey first set. Now won 5 of the last 6 slams with 41 wins and 1 loss in a final, and managed something not done since Laver in holding all 4 titles at once.

I think Murray will, before he retires, win at least one slam where he doesn't have to play Novak, Roger or Rafa.
