Re: Ireland U20s 2017
So a total of 41 names, 20 forwards and 21 backs.
There are 9 half backs and 12 outside backs which would indicate a lack of certainty over the back division selection.
Leinster are providing twice as many forwards as backs - Munster the opposite
Landsdowne alone have provided 5 forwards - Ulster only 2
Ulster again are providing less than 15% of the players.
Ulster have Rory Butler with Ballymena playing in UBL 1B, the rest are in 2A - Leinster have 13 in 1A and only one outside while Munster have 9 from 1A sides and the rest from 1B.
Please IRFU send Mike Ruddock to take over the Ulster Academy?

Hopefully that's a good sign that there is a young backrow in Ulster with potential
He'll be a great asset elsewhere when hes deemed not good enough by Ulster

Re: Ireland U20s 2017
Matty Rea is 23 now so will be leaving the Academy without ever having played for the first team. Some accounts suggest Marcus is the better player.

Re: Ireland U20s 2017
Marcus Rea was Ireland U19 captain last season so he is highly rated.
The backs this year are said to be very good. They have a lot of highly rated backs to call on.
Not sure about the forwards. That's usually a wait and see thing. The quantity of players is there so you'd hope the quality will be too.
Some names to watch out for
- Backs, Lyttle, Larmour, Kelly, Hogan, Nash, Johnston, Stewart, Hurley, Dean, Tommy O'Brien
-Forwards, Doris, Coombes, Gallagher, Rea, Cooper,

Rob Lyttle already has a few Ulster caps and looks like a quality player, McPhillips was back up last year to Bill Johnstone who ended up getting injured and McPhillips acquitted himself well.

They're the most 'talked about' players. Doesn't mean the others are not good as theres usually a few come in under the radar. The backs are supposed to be very good this year. Big question marks over the front row. Apparently Leinster U20 starting props didn't make it while their reserves got in ahead of them. As usual expect changes throughout the season.

Munster beating Edinburgh makes it 3-0, all close games though with the Scots blowing leads late on

Re: Ireland U20s 2017
Good win for the Paddy Ógs. It wasn't a classic but I wasn't expecting it to be. First big game of their careers, a step up in level from what they're used to, new combinations and it was P!$$ing rain.
Ireland scrum and lineout were well beaten. That's something they have to work on. In the loose the pack looked good. The hyped backs not so good.

Colm Hogan, Jordan Larmour, Gavin Mullin, Ciaran Frawley, Calvin Nash, Johnny McPhillips, Johnny Stewart, Joey Conway, Tadgh McElroy, Charlie Connolly, Fineen Wycherley, Oisin Dowling, Cillian Gallagher (captain), Paul Boyle, Caelan Doris
Replacements: Adam Moloney, Rory Mulvihill, Matthew Burke, Jack Regan, Gavin Coombes, Jack Lyons, Conor Fitzgerald, Tommy O'Brien
Colm Hogan switches from 11 to 15 for last week's captain Jack Kelly who didn't have a great game defensively but presumably must be injured as he's out of the 23 altogether? Another one of Prof's 'most talked about' Calvin Nash starts at 11 after starting in the senior Edinburgh game last week.
Charlie Connolly starts instead of the Ulster tighthead Peter Cooper who drops out of the squad altogether with Matthew Burke called up to the bench.
The only other change is Gavin Coombes comes into the squad at the expense of Marcus Rea, who must have picked up a knock in training as he was hardly long enough on the pitch to do so last week.
Cillian Gallagher had a good game last week so it's not surprising to see him take over the captaincy - must be a while since a Connacht player led an Ireland side... Jim Staples?

Golden, Caelan Doris was probably the stand out player last week and McPhilips got motm. McPhilips is an excellent kicker.

McPhilips definitely looked a far more rounded player than last year.

Leinster are finally producing a good back rower then? Ulster should be tapping him up already.
Looking forward to seeing Larmour and Nash play. I have heard a good things about them.

The match against Italy was similar to the match against Scotland. The forwards were dominated but still came out with a slender win. Larmour with 2 cracking tries.

Was just reading the above article about Kelly and Lamour helping out in full squads training which is good to see.
" More recently, he was voted by his peers to captain the Ireland Under-20 team." Is the captain normally picked by the squad? I'd have thought it was the manager.

Really disappointing that this wasn't being shown anywhere except in the ROI. Ireland won 27 - 22 but how did they play?

It was like backs against forwards. The Ireland backs were a class above. The pack struggled physically although they got stuck in well. The scrum was dominant especially in the first half but fell apart when Cooper came on and conceded a penalty try.
Tommy O'Brien was motm. Looks like a star player. Larmour is another who stood out.

Thanks Prof!
They seem to have been shipping a lot of injuries, so it is testament to Carolan that the team is still competitive. At this rate of attrition they will be up against it in the Wales / England games, but OTOH it will stand them in good stead for the summer.

Re: Ireland U20s 2017
Head coach Nigel Carolan has named the Ireland Under-20 team, sponsored by PwC, to face Wales in Saturday's U-20 Six Nations clash at Parc Eirias in Colwyn Bay (kick-off 6.30pm). There are three personel changes and two positional switches.
In the back-line, Jordan Larmour will wear the number 15 jersey, having played on the wing in the Ireland U-20s' opening three wins over Scotland, Italy and France.
Tommy O'Brien, the try-scoring man-of-the-match against the French, moves from the centre to the right wing, and Calvin Nash will again captain the side from the opposite flank.
There is a new centre pairing as Jack Kelly returns from the shoulder injury he sustained in Scotland to join UCD's Ciaran Frawley in midfield.
Scrum half Jonny Stewart will again partner number 10 Bill Johnston, who kicked 11 points in Ireland's 26-25 World Rugby U-20 Championship pool win over Wales in Manchester last June.
The front row remains unchanged, with hooker Tadgh McElroy packing down with props Joey Conway and Charlie Connolly, while Fineen Wycherley, who made his Munster senior debut in Cardiff last Saturday, returns to partner Oisin Dowling in the second row.
Flanker Gavin Coombes, one of three Young Munster players in the starting line-up, will make his first start of the campaign on the blindside. Paul Boyle and number 8 Caelan Doris complete the back row.
Ahead of the RTE Two-televised round 4 match, Nigel Carolan said: "The management team are very happy with how the side is progressing and developing so far in the Championship, but there is another big test ahead of us this Saturday in Colwyn Bay.
"Wales have been going well in the competition, and despite a loss to England, they had a very big win against Scotland in the last round so they will be coming into this game full of confidence.
"We've had a good two week build-up to this game and had another good (training) day with the senior side last week, so for us it's now about getting out there and putting in a performance."

They lost 41 - 27. It was a high scoring match against a good Welsh side, with plenty of action. They're progressing nicely towards the U20 world cup which is in Georgia this summer.

Re: Ireland U20s 2017
Ireland U20 Head Coach, Nigel Carolan has named the Ireland U20 team, sponsored by PwC to face England U20 this Friday evening in Donnybrook at 6pm.
There are two changes to the starting side that took on Wales on Saturday evening. Gavin Mullin returns from injury to wear the number 13 jersey and John Foley comes into the side at flanker.
In the backs, Jonny Stewart and Bill Johnston resume their half-back partnership, and outside in the centres Ciaran Frawley will line up at inside centre alongside Mullin.
The back three again sees Captain Calvin Nash on the left wing with Tommy O'Brien on the opposite flank and Jordan Larmour at full-back.
Up front, Joey Conway, Tadgh McElroy and Charlie Connolly form the front row, with Fineen Wycherley and Oisin Dowling packing down behind them in the second-row.
The back row will see Foley win his first U20 cap alongside Paul Boyle and Number 8 Caelan Doris.
Ahead of the St. Patrick's Day fixture, Nigel Carolan said "It was disappointing to come back from Wales without the win last weekend, but unfortunately some things just didn't work out for us on the night.
The players have dusted themselves down from that game and are now looking forward to Friday night's fixture.
England are coming to town with the title in the bag, but the players really want to finish the campaign on a positive note, so we're confident that we can put in a big performance in front of a home crowd on St. Patrick's Day."

I think this Ireland side can give them a good game. They're only starting to click and have the ability to run in some tries. It's conceding tries that is the problem.
