The Trump Presidency
First topic message reminder :
Well, since the last thread got terminated, I thought I'd open a new one as I think Trump's Presidency is potentially quite an important event (one way or the other), so we should talk about it.
Let's at least try to argue points raised rather than sling any personal insults (not that I mind).
To kick off, what on Earth is that Kellyanne Conway doing promoting Ivanka Trump's fashion line and does the Donald seriously think it's OK to weigh in as he's done??? With any luck, some legal eagles will tear Conway down somewhat and someone (anyone!) will convince Trump to stop tweeting. In fact, does anyone in the Administration know what they're doing? A less suitable press officer than Spicer is hard to imagine but to be fair to the guy, it must be difficult fielding media comments when he's having to make it up on the hoof.

More historical nonsense. Go look up the French military's win/lose ratio through history. Why do you think most other militaries are organised on a French model and where do those officer ranking names come from do you think?lfc91 wrote:Being better than England at football is like being better than France at war...

The sort of thing that's often said by those 70 years separated from the actual events and the preceding 10-20 years. You're applying today's morals to an historical event.Hammersmith harrier wrote:navyblueshorts wrote:Don't be daft. For a bit of balance the Dresden bombings was also terrorism.
Enough of this actually, can we keep it relatively close to Trump and his comedy Presidency?

You don't need to be around at the time at all, it was an act of terrorism that is not viewed as such because the belligerent was on the so call 'good' side, it is an unjustifiable act. It's akin to dismissing 9/11 because Al Qaeda live by a different morality, it would be despicable to suggest that wasn't an act of terrorism.navyblueshorts wrote:The sort of thing that's often said by those 70 years separated from the actual events and the preceding 10-20 years. Coincidentally I actually read an article a few days ago that painted the French as the most successful military, historically. Interesting read.
What you are missing though (either deliberately or otherwise) is that what I said, was a joke. Based around the fact that in recent time (Franco-Prussian war onwards) the French have developed a reputation as being the first to surrender in a war. I made light of that and compared it to England's recent failings at football. Hope that clears things up for you pal.

Cheers ta. Written text often misses the funny nuance. Clearly you knew the background, but many don't and trot out the 'Cheese-eating, surrender monkeys' nonsense from ignorance.lfc91 wrote:navyblueshorts wrote:More historical nonsense. I'll say again, back to Mr. Trump and at least loosely relevant commentary please. Start a thread on the morals of nuclear weapons, carpet incendiary bombing or what America has meant to the World if it floats your boat.

It's the navyblue debating method, hoping that starting off a post with 'nonsense' or 'Jesus wept' somehow negates the other person's argument.

1. We didn't ask the Japanese to bomb Pearl Harbor.
2. The Japanese happily used good American soldiers for bayonet practice and were happy to see them starve..
3. The Japanese were warned about the bomb and told to surrender unconditionally..
4. The War was crippling the US Economy..
5. The bombs shortened the war and saved allied lives not just American ones......
A Government's first priority is to protect its own people..
6. If Britain had dropped them you'd be arguing why the bombs were a good idea..
7. Truman didn't know how powerful the bombs were..
8. I don't like Sushi..

No, true enough. Although I think it's reasonable for me to draw that conclusion based on Trump's history of utterances. To be fair though, he may very well not believe what he says and simply thinks saying what he would describe as positive things about him and his Presidency is something he must do.TRUSSMAN66 wrote:navyblueshorts wrote:Excellent. Huff post Trump Favorability rating..
Favorable.......42
Unfavorable...52
GOP Senators in contested seats will need to look at poll ratings like these if and when judgment day comes..
42 percent isn't crisis point.

Trussman the crisis is far deeper than the ratings! The credibility of the office about which you care so deeply and the country's reputation in the world is at stake. Coupled with the sharp increase in international instability that is leading the likes of North Korea to start pushing the envelope because they know they're dealing with an incompetent US administration that can't even get its' stories straight. The world is watching, in disbelief.

Ah but your indifference to Trump is tacit approval and frankly all I see on here is posts supporting that, while you claim not to be a supporter. Intelligent Americans are shouting form the rooftops about this fool while his base still think he gives one iota about them! And trust me, I am amused not frustrated, its like watching a rehearsal of the Muppet show, day in day out the gift that keeps on giving.

Re: The Trump Presidency
As for the polling, unless Trump restructures the US economy within 3 years and manages to reinvent the production process for primary industry and manufacturing to cut the costs of production sufficiently to make Made in USA a viable prospect again, he's going to find a lot of double crossed voters want to export him. IMO he will refuse a 2nd term and Ryan will take over anyway, no sign the Dems will fix house and come up with an alternative to his brand of populist Realitypolitik. His only hope to me seems to hit his easy targets - Nafta and the Wall because in the latter case, rather as with Brexit, you can get a lot of simple minded people to vote for you if you substitute the real issues with a fake agenda about immigration and tap into humanity's love of ganging up on other ethnic groups.

GSC wrote:My guess is more people taking shots at Amurica in general. We all have a little patriot.
Patriotism is far too deeply entwined with militarism for my liking, especially in the USA. For the rest of us who know the future is global and the nation state concept is a lame duck as we move forward into an era where geography will be secondary to economy and the militarily powerful nations are doing their utmost to stretch their influence.
I'm reminded of Eisenhower's remarks about the waste of money spent on war that ought to be spent on education. He was a shockingly bad general but that for me was a timeless and prescient observation evocative of a president and far too great an observation than that we can expect from the incumbent.

I watched the roasting he got off Obama and Meyers in 2011 the other day, I think in that one evening we may have created a monster who wanted revenge on the club he can never be part of. Even Jeb bush has called him out as the chaos president and I fear of for the world when it seems we will be subjected to his pinball style of conflict for at least the next 4 years. I actually think Joe Biden would be the next best move for the Dems but secretly hope the GOP will say enough is enough and run him out of town, assuming he hasn't moved to Moscow by then

Re: The Trump Presidency
When he doesn't deliver - which is inevitable - though he will go for the low hanging fruit in nafta and the wall; the Canadian are banking on a soft landing and a good sign is the appointment of professional trade negotiatiors for the Nafta renegotiations. Canada has also recently signed CETA and has strong trading links with China so the inevitable effect on primary industry in Canada can be offset somewhat however a tariff war with the USA is something it can ill afford. The other thing he may try and do is build a wall; that may cause such a ruckus in the US that the GOP might be forced to intervene, but how I don't know. I do predict massive social upheaval though because it may push Liberals to protest and we'll see some real clashes. His base may want a wall and want immigrants out but what they really want is the $$$ hr jobs they used to have in manufacturing which no longer exist. Anyway, Comey is testifying, there is an investigation into the whole affair and the Russians are helping with choice Trump quotes while the press is out for his head! Could be he doesn't see out the year.
