Re: Group D Discussion
Can still see Argentina escaping this group, and beating an inconsistent Nigeria. Croatia would still need a point vs Iceland in the last game, just to make sure of winning the group

Re: Group D Discussion
Croatia just have to avoid being spanked and Nigeria spanking Argentina to win the group.
Nigeria through with a win.
Iceland and Argentina need to win and probably end up scoring a few

Re: Group D Discussion
Now tonight (Tues Jun 26) should see some real drama, with Nigeria (possibly) and Argentina (definitely) needing to win to progress. Will Messi step up?

Re: Group D Discussion
Messi, wonderful goal. Great ball and Finnish.
Might bring Nigeria out now.
Though Di Maria diving is getting worse.

Sorry to be a bit negative.
But the amount of diving and falling over at the slightest touch, is ruining this WC for me.

Argentina 1-0 up at half time. And at the moment are going through.
Though apparently Iceland are dominating the last 20 mins of the 1st half. Iceland score and it could all change.

Re: Group D Discussion
Agree
Definite pen in my opinion. Moses scores, Nigeria going through.
Croatia go 1-0 up at the same time. Iceland out of it.
Is there something against giving yellow cards at this tournament. The mess just before the penalty should have seen someone get one. Then Di Maria dives try a get a penalty .

Re: Group D Discussion
Sometimes the referee has to be a sergeant major with a revolver in his pocket. Some players might lose their heads such is the pressure. In an earlier friendly between Nigeria and Argentina (without Messi), Argentina led 2-0 in the first half and lost 2-4.
Croatia have taken Iceland out of the picture: so the Nigeria v Argentina match will determine who will go second.

Gonna be honest, don’t think he actually fouled him. Can’t believe he’s be so dumb to have hands on though, the ways things have been going! Daft

Can see why you think that. Either way he's just idiotic putting his hands on.
Neither him or Di Maria are playing well.

Head on to arm. No chance that’s a penalty, or deliberate

Re: Group D Discussion
Iceland 1 v Croatia 1 - so Iceland come back into it. Everything back in the balance.
And it was a penalty to Iceland.

Re: Group D Discussion
Argentina have just not turned up this half.
Iceland get a goal back with a pen. Still need 2 more to be in contention. 1-1.
Nigeria with a terrible miss, now going for VAR on possible handball. No pen, right decision not a deliberate.

Aguero is the type of person you need in this situation. An all out potent striker.Just John wrote:Head on to arm. No chance that’s a penalty, or deliberate

Re: Group D Discussion
Argentina have conceded 5 goals and scored 2 goals. I doubt they are going to be much of a threat even if they get through to the knockout stage.

Looks like the round of 16 could have some cracking matches. All the "top" teams are making it through but not necessarily topping their groups.

Re: Group D Discussion
Croatia 2-1. Iceland pretty much now out. And Croatia win.
Messi booked for time wasting !!!
Argentina win 2-1. They may have just scrapped through, but the important thing is they're through.
France v Argentina. Will either be a fantastic show of football, or a massive disappointment.
Croatia v Denmark the same.
Got to say this has been a thrilling night, even if the football's not been brilliant. But the tension.

Well done to Argentina. They made it through. I think that means they play France in the Round of 16 - and France haven't looked too convincing.

Re: Group D Discussion
I know I'm looking ahead which I said we shouldn't do.
But the QF at the moment. Will be the winners of Uruguay/Portugal v the winners Argentina/France.
If Portugal and Argentina get through, will any of the pre match talk be about anything other than Ronaldo v Messi?

No
Couldn’t call either of those last 16 ties. The other half of the draw looks a relatively easy Spain v Croatia QF.

Re: Group D Discussion
Argentina were good in the first half and although less dominant in the second just about deserved to win. But Nigeria with a bit more composure could have qualified themselves.

Re: Group D Discussion
Hard to really pick a winner so far. None of the favorites have hit the ground running. I'd tentatively say Brazil have another gear to reach, France do, but no idea if Deschamps can ever reach it.

Re: Group D Discussion
For me Uruguay, Croatia have looked quite impressive as have Mexico and Columbia (despite a first match loss). Brazil look like they have another gear to go to. Belgium and England look okay but as yet haven't been tested. I think a South American team are looking like favorites to go far: Uruguay, Brazil, Columbia.

Not sure, I didn't watch them yesterday and they were apparently much improved, but they were bang average the 2 times I did see them

Re: Group D Discussion
Uruguay are gonna be tough to beat, in a World Cup where teams have struggled against average sides with good defences, a good side with a good defence could be a nightmare.
They have the Atletico about them, not just cos of the centre back pair, but it does stem from there too.
Croatia have the potential but they’ve had that before.
Brazil and France seem set to improve.
Love the drama tonight, I’m enjoying this World Cup immensely

Re: Group D Discussion
Gutted for Nigeria.
Really wanted them to go through.
They have some young players who are decent.
Maybe 4 years time can go further.
