I'd read it rick, but I blocked superfly some time ago so if he posts anything it's just for the sake of his own mental wellbeing as far as I'm concerned

***CRANE FLY UPDATE***
Still got millions of them on the lawn.
Now we are in spider mating season, we we will shortly be inundated with newspaper reports about false widow bites. I have pithily renamed it - the season where no one dies from "lethal" and "poisonous" false widow bites despite panic, hysteria and misinformed newspaper reports that they are invading our homes with the sole intention of biting and killing our children.
I hope Galted likes the snappy, punchy season name. I came up with it for him.

I did take a lovely picture of a shield bug on a tree on Sunday. It was a really vibrant red. I haven't seen one that bright before.

Not sure Jules. I blocked him ages ago for being an irritant.

Re: Music Section Morning Tea Society
I was just opening the door outside this morning when I thought I saw what looked like a cricket at first glance... from directly above it on the side of the door threshold. Turned out to be a huntsman in a strange position. Anyway, I got a plastic take away container and an A4 piece of paper to do the usual manoeuvre into the container... expecting it to quickly react and give me a fright. However this one was slightly sleepy. Reminded me a bit of Joe Biden. It walked into the container all by itself and sat still. Didn't have to use the paper to cover the top.
I took it around the side (near where the spider killing wasps hang out... but none there this morning) and encouraged it to go through a gap near a brick vent... and back under the house, which it did with apparent eagerness. Better to have it there picking off cockroaches and silverfish. I'll sleep soundly knowing it's there under the floorboards doing its job.

I wouldn't sleep soundly with one of those b@stards in the vicinity.
Although I did once share a shower with a cane toad and two huntsman spiders and the spiders behaved well throughout. The toad lacked correct shower etiquette and wouldn't stop staring at my hampton.

Such an Aussie thing to say.
Huntsman are pretty unnerving actually and I say that as a spider owner and enthusiast.

Re: Music Section Morning Tea Society
I might add that I woke up early this morning with a pain behind my shoulder blade, down the back of my arm and partially on the forearm too. Took a panadol and tried stretching (throughout the day) but it still feels uncomfortable. Put some Deep Heat on earlier today but still quite a bit of pain all day.
So I'm not sure if I (i) just slept the wrong way (don't think so but I possibly may have?), (ii) got bitten by my arthropod friend (it did look like a 'flatter' specimen of huntsman but it was discovered at the opposite side of the house) or (iii) whether it's first symptoms of a stroke (I feel OK everywhere else though). If it's not better by the morning I might go and visit the Doc. Have a feeling I may have pinched a nerve so probably a bit of (i).

Uncanny, I have an intolerable pain in the elbow. Took a couple of painkillers to help me get through taking jr to the playground. Am thinking of starting heavy drinking again, helped me through my twenties and thirties so I'm sure a sore elbow and a multitude of irritating kids will be no problem.

Meanwhile, believe some of you folk are Pointless viewers. Just enjoyed the opening round on 1960s Oscar nominated films. Thought I would get the lot (he said immodestly) but mucked up with A Thousand Clowns - not one I know at all. Help me out?

Saw that a couple of decades back, it's about a man hanging out with a young boy before such things were suspicious.
One memorable quote, something along the lines of 'the only thing you should expect from life is a good excuse for all the things you don't get'.

Fresh (Antipodean) fist.
Just cleaned the pool and went for a swim. Quite invigorating.
Tino, this beauty must have been floating near the borderline tiles and got splashed out.
Any ideas what it is? A baby huntsman of some sort... only 55-60mm leg span and a nice olive colour tending to light brown. Nice patterning too.
Enjoy.
Think it's a juvenile Holconia immanis... it has that conspicuous black stripe and appears dorsoventrally-flattened. Not by me.

Not bad, apart from a swollen and painful elbow, unfortunately we don't have any villainous spiders round these parts to blame it on.
How are things with you? I did have to suppress a pang of jealousy when you said you'd been for a swim.

Oh I did, PJ. Nothing like some early morning porn to get the juices flowing.
It looks like what we would call a cardinal spider. Generally on the bigger side of UK spiders so quite often found beneath Galted's Hi-Tec or down someones hoover. Not in the Windows household, obviously, but seeing as Brit's are a bunch of softc*cks in general when it comes to bugs, cardinals are too big for our liking.
I think they were called cardinals because Cardinal Wolsey was terrified of them but that could well be b*llocks.
