Tino will know better but spiders are incredibly efficient when it comes to eating. As cold blooded ambush hunters they use hardly any energy when waiting for prey. In general they also 'eat' by sucking out juices instead of consuming the body so a single hairy leg isn't going to get them very far.
When we had stick insects they would occasionally loose legs. If they were not fully grown they would often start to regrow the legs between moults, but it did mean they would have mini legs between the original full grown ones.

Tino, I have an arachnid question. I found another large spider inside the front door yesterday. We've had some heavy rain so maybe it was looking for a safe refuge. I noticed it only had 6 legs... do they just drop off through injury or is it possible they eat them when food is scarce?
I've never heard of them eating their own legs but there is something tragically funny about that.
More likely lost them to injury.

Precisely this.
I mentioned t'other day that ours is either the laziest spider in history or she is permanently watching her weight. I have literally seen a cricket walk directly over her front legs and she didn't even flinch. This has happened loads of times.
She'll eventually go for it but is bone idle most of the time.

You'll find that even some long standing members will get all bent out of shape trying to get the thread split, LiW.
Not me, though. It is beneath me.

Don't worry - I've been posting on here for years and I still haven't got the hang of the split - doesn't help that I have never bothered to take the time to work out (or ask) how many posts you get on each page.

Re: Music Section Morning Tea Society
Fascinating stuff.
We used to host families of blue-tongue lizards who would just appear out on the lawn on sunny days. Our cat, Tiger, befriended them and would often 'kiss' them, give them a gentle tap with the paws... then lie alongside them for a spot of sun baking together. Hilarious. Have photos of it somewhere.
One of them had part of its tail missing (not from Tiger... more likely from a kookaburra) so we came up with the name Stumpy for him... we were very creative with names. Eventually it grew back somewhat but you could see the new growth looked different to the rest of the tail.
Also had a fast-moving eastern long-necked tortoise who we named Speedy Gonzales. Turn your back and it would be 2m along the way to somewhere. Ernie was another one... he seemed a bit slow. We built elaborated enclosures for them featuring ponds and rock caves. In late autumn we chucked down some hay inside and around caves and they hiberated for a few months. Then on the first warmish day you'd see a long head suddenly appear from their shell with what I swear was a smile. Their bites were funny. Sort of like having a wooden clothes peg snap on the tip of your finger but hardly any pressure in the jaws obviously. We had about 8 of them at one stage.
Eventually took them down to the creek across the road at Seven Little Australians Park (named after the author Ethel Turner's novel... she lived there for most of her life) and it was fantastic watching them swim towards the reeds and rock ledges overhanging a large pond. (could be the one in the second photo in the link below) The descendants of that family would still be there probably as it's very remote and secluded. Like a miniature Jurassic Park only about 8 miles from the city.

Many lizards do have that neat trick of dropping their tails if they absolutely have to, and will grow them back. My understanding (and I have seen such a lizard) is that they don't grow the bones back, so go from being 'stumpy' to 'floppy'.

Just sent out a bulk PM invitation for the India v England Tipping Comp to about 25 people... so don't be shocked if you see something from me in your inbox.

I know the pressures of running a hugely successful, efficient and wildly popular 606v2 competition. It can be a lonely place.

Flipper.
Sent an invite out to him.
I'm really worried he might have encountered those nasty bullying kids kicking his ball(s) over the paling fence at the estate again. I told him not to go outside unless it's really necessary. The cricket tipping comp is a timely safety device for him. Perhaps his only chance for survival out there...
