First topic message reminder :

You asked and I delivered. Here we can discuss all things World Handicap System. Like it or not, it comes into effect on Monday November 2nd so we’re going to have to get used to Handicap Index, Course Handicap, Playing Handicap, Slope Rating, Course Ratings and everything in between Smile

Anyone with particularly strong feelings - or maybe not - about WHS might be interested in the R&A’s survey asking for golfers’ opinions. We received the link from Scottish Golf and others via their clubs. Oddly enough I can’t find it on the R&A website!

I’d be quite interested, my number one observation would be simply that it’s too volatile but that’s just me. One of the other things I struggle with and I know I’ve said it before is the concept of R/O has basically disappeared. Finally and this one is quirky and related to my old home club. For years they’ve run a Tuesday night 13 holer, I’d always seen it (and I believe in line with its original conception) was that it was effectively competitive practice and a beer afterwards. £5 in the kitty and payouts for 1st,2nd ntp at the par 3 11th and ntp in 2 at the short par 4 5th. It’s been moving away from that concept for a couple of years now.and getting too serious. Rejigged handicaps I.e. 13/18ths of you allowance and applied in order of the stroke index of the involved holes. This year they’ve even got them as qualifiers (yes over 13 holes). Thing is the courses bite is all in the last 6 holes. So playing 20 Tuesday nights over the season in theory will end up with the regulars being on artificially low handicaps. I just don’t agree with it. I understand the R&As efforts to make golf more accessible and accept. 9 hole and now other scores but really some thing are just best left alone.
Quirkiness aside would I like to go back to the old system? Yes & No. Yes I think it was better however if the rest of the world keeps the current system then no.
