Australia v India Test Series Tipping Competition
First topic message reminder :
2020 Border - Gavaskar Trophy Tipping Competition Rules:
Changes since last tipping competition
- Omitted the "Overall Test Prediction", so just pick your winning team before each Test. Or go for a Draw if you like.
- Simplified wicket keeping - select who will take more caught behinds and stumpings combined. Paine or Saha. 50 points for the correct pick.
- If they both take the same number of dismissals - then we all get only 25 points each. Or nominate "the same" to get 50 points.
1.
Pick 2 (two) batsmen and 2 (two) bowlers from both Australia and India who you think will score the most runs and take the most wickets.
You get both batting and bowling points per innings so a bowler who scores runs has both batting and bowling scores added together.
e.g.
Wade, Smith, Starc, Cummins
Pujara, Kohli, Shami, Bumrah
2.
Pick 1 (one) fielder from each team; excluding wicket keepers for most catches in the Series.
It can be a bowler (for c&b) if you want.
e.g.
Labuschagne, Rahane
3.
Select which wicket keeper will take the greatest number of catches, stumpings and run outs combined for each Test.
If a wicket keeper is injured then the replacement keeper's figures shall be used.
e.g.
Paine or the same
4.
Predict the Toss:
a) Who wins the toss?
e.g. Australia
b) Winning captain's decision - bat or field?
e.g. Bat
5.
a) Predict the 1st Test result.
e.g. India
Selections must be posted a minimum one (1) hour before the commencement of each Test. No PM reminders shall be sent.
Scoring:
1.
1 point for every run scored by your nominated batsmen. Add together for each Test.
Bonus 20 points for 100 runs.
extra 25 points for 150 runs.
extra 40 points for 200 runs.
extra 50 points for 250 runs.
extra 60 bonus points for 300+ runs.
Note: the batting & bowling score bonuses accumulate so;
Batting:
100 runs = 120 points. A player scores 127 + 20 = 147 points.
150 runs = 195 points. A player scores 176 + 20 + 25 = 221 points.
200 runs = 285 points. A player scores 243 + 20 + 25 + 40 = 328 points.
250 runs = 385 points. A player scores 282 + 20 + 25 + 40 + 50 = 417 points
300+ runs = 445 points. A player scores 309 + 20 + 25 + 40 + 50 + 60 = 504 points.
Bowling:
20 points per wicket with a bonus 50 points for a 5-fer.
An extra 35 points for 6-fer, 40 for 7-fer, 45 for 8-fer, 50 for 9-fer.
An extra 100 bonus points for a 10-fer.
5 wickets = 100 + 50 = 150 points
6 wickets = 120 + 50 + 35 = 205 points.
7 wickets = 140 + 50 + 35 + 40 = 265 points
8 wickets = 160 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 = 330 points
9 wickets = 180 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 + 50 = 400 points
10 wickets = 200 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 + 50 + 100 = 520 points
Caught and bowled = 20 points for the wicket + 25 bonus points for the catch = 45 points.
2.
Fielder catches: Your nominated fieldsmen earn you 25 points per catch and 25 points for a run out.
3.
Wicket keepers: 50 points for correct selection. eg. Paine or Saha.
Or if you think they will take the same number of total dismissals per innings - then nominate "the same" = 50 points.
If they take the same number of catches and stumpings (combined) and you've picked either one of the keepers - then 25 points only.
4.
a) Correctly predict who wins the toss = 15 points
b) Correctly predict what the winning Captain decides to do = 15 points - only for those with part a) above correct; no points if your a) was incorrect.
5.
a) Correctly predict the winning team for each Test = 75 points.
b) If you guess all 4 Test Match outcomes correctly then there is a further 125 point bonus = 300 + 125 = 425 points.
Note: Correctly predict a "Draw" = 75 points
If one (or more) of your selected players gets injured during a match or is dropped from the Test side after a match, then you’ll have the opportunity to select replacement players – either as it happens - for the injured player or before the next Test commences (for a player who gets dropped). Doesn’t have to be the actual substitute player – it can be somebody else already in the team. However, you don’t receive any of their previous points – you must start accumulating points from scratch with them.

Jesus, Gooseberry. You can back off mate.
Think we need to stop the count for JD. He is running away with it.

Just like to point out I was in the top 3 in the early days of this competition so just writing the wrongs that Vihari heaped on me in the middle tests of the series.

The annoying thing is, I have had Marnus from day one but had to ditch him in a (futile) attempt to catch JD.
I need a double ton from Paine, him to take 15 catches in the Indian innings and a triple century from Pujara and Rahane to secure a draw. Easy.

Tino and JD - I see you both have Washington Sundar next in your queue. OK?
Guildford - please let me know your next Indian bowler choice just in case Saini doesn't return.
Hi Joey - sorry, only just picked this thread up now. Given my scores, was hiding behind the sofa! If necessary, I'll go with Sundar. Trust ok, cheers.

I do think we are going to get a ‘redemption’ ton from Paine and the fawning sycophancy we are going to get from the Aussie comms and media is going to be far worse than any pain of losing this comp!

You may be in luck, Alfie. That was a smart move I thought at the time. I still think you and Tino could get that one right and reap the reward.
I tinkered with the same idea myself (given that I knew there would be more rain later in the match... and even posted the 7-day forecast up on the 'rest of the world' thread... for everyone's benefit) but I didn't have the balls to put my money where my mouth was... virtually speaking of course.
KP_fan is roaring up the chart and Goose had a very good day as well. Well done both of you!

For me to win this in 2 days....Shardul must get a 5-for and either rohit or Gill crack a 100 to win India the test

JD has a 211 lead over Gooseberry with Tino nipping at Goose's heels.
So you'll need to pick up at least 509 points somehow. I'm not saying it can't be done but it certainly would be a great achievement!
JD has Lab, Smith, Cummins, Hazlewood, Gill, Pant, Sundar and Siraj - Paine and Oz
Goose has Lab, Smith, Cummins, Starc, Pujara, Rahane, Sundar and Siraj - Paine and Oz
Tino has Wade, Paine, Starc, Lyon, Pujara, Rahane, Sundar and Siraj - Pant and Draw
James has Warner, Smith, Cummins, Starc, Pujara, Rahane, Siraj and Natarajan - Pant and Oz
I've got Lab, Smith, Cummins, Starc, Gill, Rahane, Sundar and Shardul - Paine and Oz
Guildford has Warner, Smith, Cummins, Starc, Pujara, Rahane, Sundar and Siraj - Paine and Oz
You've got Green, Paine, Cummins, Hazlewood, Rohit, Gill, Sundar and Shardul - Pant and India ....is that right?
Alfie has Lab, Smith, Cummins, Lyon, Pujara, Rahane, Sundar and Siraj - Paine and Draw
Olly has Smith, Green, Cummins, Lyon, Rahane, Agarwal, Shardul and Natajaran - Paine and Oz
Soul has Wade, Green, Cummins, Hazlewood, Pujara, Rahane, Shardul and Siraj - Paine and Oz
Duty has Smith, Wade, Starc, Lyon, Pujara, Rahane, Siraj and Natarajan - Pant and Oz
Then just add 25 points for your catchers and the bonuses for centuries and 5-fers, etc.
Should be quite an interesting finish. There's so much movement happening all the time... when the runs are flowing and wickets are falling.

Re: Australia v India Test Series Tipping Competition
Not sure how JD has managed this, despite me leaping up the table like a randy salmon he's extended the gap again, sterling show across the 4 tests from his chaps.
Still an outside chance for me, we have one bowler different and both Indian batsmen . James will struggle to catch me having pretty much the same picks, chance Tino could pull back. The draw is still on the table, and the keeper still up fro grabs although looks like Pant is in a strong position there. Third place seems the most wide open of the medal positions but still a big day tomorrow.

It's the difference between Hazlewood (9) and Starc (1).... so JD increased his lead over you by 8 points.
Nice work from Soul today - picked up 50 points for Rohit's two catches as well as the bonus 20 points for Siraj's 5-fer.

Yes sorry, I meant Siraj. I was hoping for Shardul to get his fifth too.
So many S's in the Indian team - and they've all played very well. Except Shaw.... and Saini who toiled away not looking 100% today.

JD, Tino and Guildford - I'd already replaced Saini with Washington Sundar for you guys... so I hope you don't mind 'forfeiting' the 5 runs he made.
Let's hope Saini doesn't make a ton tomorrow... if he gets to bat.
It's great that the match, series (and trophy) is coming down to the last day. I haven't checked the forecast yet but thought I heard someone on the radio say there'll be heavy rain overnight but it will ease by mid morning.

Joey - that's fine.
Whilst goose leaps up the table like a randy salmon, I'm the tin of out-of-date supermarket salmon being cleared off the shelf.

I'm pretty much on a similar supermarket shelf to you, Guildford.
One good thing going for us though - at least we're not a tin of custard or dare I say - condensed milk.

Re: Australia v India Test Series Tipping Competition
Points Table
4th Test, Day 5:
3849 JDizzle [302]
3535 Gooseberry [207]
3488 James [235] *
3438 Tino [192] *
3421 Pal Joey [244]
3354 KP_Fan [368] # *
3271 Guildfordbat [207]
3256 Alfie [247]
2850 Soul Requiem [207]
2776 Olly [155]
2546 Duty [170] *
Average score: 3253 [230]
# India win = 75 points
* Pant 4 dismissals = 50 points (Pant: 4 caught behinds; Paine: 3 caught behinds)
First figure - accumulative score / accumulative average score
Second figure in [brackets] - daily score / daily average
Firstly, congratulations to both JDizzle for winning this tipping competition by 314 points over Gooseberry and of course, hearty congratulations to KP_Fan - who not only must be celebrating the magnificent win which clinched the Border-Gavaskar Series for India - but also picked India to win on here as well as guessing that Rishabh Pant would collect more dismissals behind the stumps. And he also scored a massive 368 points today!
It has been quite a whirlwind series both on the field and on here. It never ceases to amaze me how much the table can fluctuate in the space of 24 hours. I've been lucky enough to have spent more time at home since the series started back on 17th December with Covid restrictions making it perhaps more easier to turn my attention to doing this in between doing my usual day-to-day job in the home office. (keeps me a bit more sane too...)
I can't really say it's like a second job but I can probably say it has become second nature running the comp - once the sheet is all set up and the toss is carried out. After that I just enter in a few scores now and then (every 5 minutes or so)... or like this afternoon... enter every single run or wicket as it happens... keeping an eye on the TV and Cricinfo scoreboards to make sure it all tallies up. I'm always very happy when everything matches up!
It has been a pleasure doing this - and I really appreciate all of your efforts too - to get your selections in on time (often when none of us are the wiser as to whom will actually be playing) and then juggle things around after each Test match or when a player needs to be replaced mid-match. We've had no shortage of that occurring have we?
In addition to the daily tally board I also compiled a Special Team Score - based on runs and wickets (mainly) and catches but without any bonus points (it's sort of my special sauce formula!) - by adding up all the individual players (past and present during the series) and then dividing the overall "Team Score" by eleven. I tell you it was quite tricky trying to stitch it all together with batting orders getting swapped around, new players added, etc.
It ended up:
India:
3117 - average player score 283.4
Australia:
3074 - average player score 279.5
A bit weird huh? It was even closer up until the last session of play.
It's a bit hard to compare players from India who only played one or two tests... and one would need to extrapolate their scores perhaps... but here goes the Top 7 Individual Player Scores:
556 Cummins
514 Pant (3 tests... sure he would have challenged for player of the series if he had played 4)
463 Labuschagne
438 Smith (his catches helped his score somewhat)
418 Rahane
408 Hazlewood
346 Pujara
Pretty sure a fit Bumrah, Ashwin, Jadeja would have been up there if they played all 4 Tests. So too Sundar and Shardul if they had played more tests than just the one.
Anyway... thanks once again everyone. You're a great bunch of guys.
Hope you've all enjoyed participating and all the best for your teams in the near future!

Great stuff, Pee Jay and thanks for running it. This is a model of how to run an online competition effectively and efficiently. Some of us could learn some lessons from you! Thanks for putting it all together.
Congratulations to the podium posters and a special congratulations to JD. Lead from the start pretty much and a deserved winner.

Many congrats to JD. For winning obviously but, more importantly, preventing goose from doing so!

Re: Australia v India Test Series Tipping Competition
Thanks Tino. The day is not so depressing after reading your comment. Blue Tuesday here! Thanks Guildford... always a pleasure.
Yes, JD had an outstanding performance leading the table on 13 out of 17 days... and kicking even further ahead today to cross the line in fine style.
Cheers Ollie... was trying to will you along as best I could! Glad you enjoyed it.
Alfie, as you said recently, Lyon didn't produce the fruit when so desperately needed... his basket was pretty much empty throughout the series. Maybe all the talk of the "400th" approaching got to him and the Indians took him to town on several occasions.
I can probably safely say it now - but all the talk in the lead up predicting a comfortable home win... and then more of it after Adelaide. You could feel the inevitable falling into place after Melbourne and then Sydney... and then Brisbane. Perfect for India who behaved more like sportsmen with intent (as Kohli would say) compared to our collection of immature sore losers (apart from Cummins, H'wood, Green and a couple of others... who behaved decently) with over-inflated egos... most of them.
I'd even add the coach and most of the commentary teams into that category - only Hussey and Gilchrist were dignified... the rest of them are poor excuses for 'comic relief'. (Isa not included) Embarrassing really. Had to switch over and listen to Ch 7 - Punter seemed serious and kept to the script... whilst on radio Ian Chappell was a head above the rest I thought. Most of the others were over-animated and almost disrespectful when they thought Australia would 'bring it home'.
Maybe I missed a few good callers but honestly... a lot of them were almost sanctimonious (Mark Waugh early today when he said "ask the same question at lunch" when talking about how many wickets India would be down) which sounds really awful to the fair and impartial ear!
I know I predicted Australia to win in all 4 - but that's heart over head, right? I seriously had question marks for Sydney and Brisbane but went for glory... only to get shot down in flames!
Just realised - this should be on the main "Rest of the (uncivilised) World " thread but this is just between you and me, OK?

Re: Australia v India Test Series Tipping Competition
Walk in the park for JDizz in the end. Spent the whole tournament thinking I should put Hazelwood in and not doing it because batting points, foolishness! Also got stung trying to be smart with Vihari early doors, should have listened to the Indian experts who didnt want him in the side at all. KPFs detailed knowledge of the form of Indians payed dividends for him at the end.
Great contest, great series.

Cheers all but especially PJ. A masterclass in how to run a comp. I still haven’t mastered the scoring system so to be on top of it and get results up as quick as he does is some effort.
Somehow managed to end up selecting every centurion of the series in my side I believe? Maybe bar Rahane. That and getting Gill and Pant in at the right time worked a treat.

Thanks a lot, JD. Very kind words.
You always kept ahead of the curve and held all of the centurion aces (bar Rahane as you say... but most of us had him too) for the duration.
You were very early onto Gill and Pant which gave you the boost to kick ahead from the rest of the field. It was a pleasure watching you accumulate big scores day after day.
Well done Mr Dizzle!

Funny you asked, Tino. I was thinking of running another competition for the India - England series. I'm very interested and happy to do it.
Only problem for me is the time zone. India is about 5.5 hours behind AEST so I'll probably last until around midnight here... then flake out.
The day-night one in Ahmedabad starting 24 Feb is even more severe for me.
So if you don't mind me posting the scoreboard not immediately after the day's play... but next morning here, say 8-9am, which would be 10-11pm your time. I suppose if everyone's really keen I could post the daily results up a bit earlier... 6-7am here or 8-9pm UK time.
Does that sound OK to you and everyone else?

I was only joking but if you're serious, then that would be super. I don't think any of us are in a position to complain about when scores get posted seeing as you're literally doing all the hard work.

No, I'm serious. This is serious sport!
I feel bad that I couldn't give JD a decent winning prize... like a virtual island in the Whitsundays with private airstrip, fully-stocked beach bar with an in-house reggae band.
Of course I'll do it. It will be a great pleasure to dust off the still warm spreadsheet, scrub and then thoroughly disinfect all traces of the Australian team... then replace them with some true gentlemen champions of sport - otherwise known as the England cricket team.
February 5th is the 1st Test so I'll aim to get the thread up on the Monday... the 1st.
