Source? Or are you gonna do a D4 and act like you have inside info?
If true then Barker will get destroyed, out of his depth.

Hope not, barker may still not be 100%, he has no chance against matinez. He isn't on the same level as Martinez and none of barkers opponents have been top 10 in the middleweight division. Martinez in 8 rounds

Re: Barker v Martinez - October 1st
Seen a couple of things on Twitter, BoxingScene and so on, much the usual. Doesn't mean it's definitely on as we know from previous experience.
If this fight does happen, then I'm a mixture of both happy and excited for Barker, as well as being worried for him. I think of all the Brits still on the domestic / European scene he's the pick of the bunch along with Brook and Gavin, but this would be far, far too soon for him in my eyes. Would hate to see him get outclassed and have his confidence wrecked. Still, bigger upsets have happened.
I said the other day that, given how bereft 160 lb is of big names and proven talent, Martinez may just have to bite the bullett and give a (relative) unknown such as Barker a crack at him. Didn't truly expect it to happen though, was convinced he'd be holding out for that 'showdown' with Chavez Jr.

Exactly. As much as i like Barker - this is a step too far and too soon. Good on him for stepping up though.

I dont really think it will happen, but I do believe people are going over the top with Martinez. Sure, he is a good operator and near the top of the p4p rankings, but that is more down to the lack of talent around these days. People are getting to excited over the KO of Williams. At times he struggled with Pavlik.
For what it is worth, he stops Barker late.

Re: Barker v Martinez - October 1st
Barker cant win this one, for a start he doesnt have the power. But if he canhang tough show some grit and make it passed 8 without getting KTFO Pwill style then the networks in America may want to match him against someone else, the division is poor so damage limitation and some British steel may get him a audience
but he may just get flattened inside 4, thats always possible

So let me see if I understand this correctly. Barker, you claim, has "NO CHANCE", but it will still take Martinez eight rounds to dispose of this no-hoper? At that rate he'd win if you gave him half a chance!
Also, if Barker goes three rounds, does this make him better than Paul Williams (FYI this would be the Paul Williams many predicted a while back would give Floyd Mayweather his toughest challenge)?

You've got a bee in your bonnet about the whole bandwagon thing these last couple of days Dave. Hope this isn't going to be an indication of your moods for the full duration of your good ladies pregnancy because you don't have the sunniest disposition at the best of times old chap.

Re: Barker v Martinez - October 1st
T'is a shame really, cos at home, I'm loving, caring and attentive to my wife's needs. (I'm hoping one of her needs is for me to go out at the weekend and drink several pints). However, I do feel it says more about the proliferation of people hitching a ride on various bandwagons as opposed to me being somewhat miffed about it.
Whaddya mean I don't have the sunniest of dispositions, you cheeky wart?

Dave the opportunity is there to be ahead of the curve and get off the Alvarez bandwagon now. Is a win win if Rhodes does it you look a genius if he doesn't you say heart ruled head as he is a Yorkshireman (Rhodes not Alvarez)

Re: Barker v Martinez - October 1st
Rowley, your sound advice is based on the supposition that I was ON the Alvarez bandwagon in the first place. I think Ryan stands a good chance but like Limond vs Morales, I think the elements may do for him as much as the opposition. However, I'm hoping for good things.
"What's that up there?"
"That's t' sun, Ryan"
"By 'eck, that's warm innit? How long's it gonna be there?"
"About 12 hours today and t' same again tomorrow."
"Bloody 'ell!"
I could start my own bandwagon of not being on a bandwagon.

No I feel has he next to no chance. Barker doesn't have the power, skill, workload or stamina to beat Martinez. I feel barker wont go past 8 rounds. He is a tricky costumer and hard to catch clean, and martinez won't bulldoze him. But as the fight goes on barker will tire, Martinez will land more and get him out about rounds 6-8 with a few knockdowns in the fight much like Martinez last opponent.
If e goes past three rounds he isn't better than Williams. Williams got hit with a shot which would take out any middleweight atm. Williams did go 12 rounds with martinez in their first fight and won so I don't see how barker managing to stay around for 8 rounds is better than that.

Now i may be going out on a limb here. But i do not believe DAVE was serious when he asked if going 3 rounds would make him better than Williams. Just saying

Re: Barker v Martinez - October 1st
Whilst I'd humbly suggest that, "with child" is a much nicer turn of phrase, the answer is yes....we still haven't had the scan confirming the presence of alien life with my wife yet, but all the other tests have come back positive and, despite her eating fresh fruit and veg, she's still expanding.
We don't go for the scan until next Friday, by which time we believe she'll be about 12-13 weeks.
Oh, by the way, it is our first!

i would of taken the fight in an heartbeat if i was him, what does he have to lose? he's a young fighter who is at european level and is better than that level, the next step is the world and he may only get 1 title shot, if he does well and competes before losing, etc he may get a name

Re: Barker v Martinez - October 1st
Agree with Towzer (Lord, what's wrong with me?!). Barker would have been a fool to turn this fight down. It's a given that he'll earn by far his biggest purse for it, of course, but even forgetting that, who's to say whether he'll ever get another chance after this? There are no guarantees in a sport like boxing. If a chance like this comes along, you've got to grab it with both hands.
Of course I'm worried that he'll be totally demolished and that it will ruin him as a fighter - but on the other hand, who knows? Even if he does lose it could be a real opportunity for him if he performs admirably. There have been a few British fighters who have been plucked out of nowhere, matched against a top fighter and, even though they lost, impressed enough people to secure title shots off the back of that performance. Cornelius Boza-Edwards was given his Super-Featherweight title shot off the back of losing valiantly against Alexis Arguello, and Clinton Woods was barely established on the European scene when he put himself in the shop window with a gutsy losing performance against Roy Jones Jr.

This is a brave decision by Barker (and Hearn) and I hope it pays off for him. We'll know a lot more about Darren Barker on Oct 1.

Not heard much about Barkers chin. Don't think it's a Froch (granite), but it's certainly not a RJJ (china).

I hate it when promoters throw a relative novice into the ring against a wrecking machine.
Why not stick Barker in with someone half decent on the world stage before this. Of course we do know why.
