SURREY VS LEICESTERSHIRE/ DURHAM/ WARWICKSHIRE/ MIDDLESEX ROYAL LONDON ONE DAY CUP
Surrey have named a 12 player squad for the game against Leicestershire on 2 August at Guildford.
Rory Burns is currently unavailable as he is recharging before the final games of the County Championship season, Ben Foakes is no doubt doing the same.
Hashim Amla has retired from white ball cricket.
Matt Dunn has recovered from the injury on Sunday whatever it was.
James Taylor remains on the treatment table.
Every one else is playing in a competition called the hundred
Ben Geddes will skipper Surrey for the first time in a classified game.
FULL SQUAD:
B Geddes (c)
N Barnwell
J Blake (wk)
M Dunn
N Kimber
T Lawes
Y Majid
C McKerr
R Patel
N Reifer
C Steel
A Virdi
Absolutely ridiculous that Burns and Foakes have to recharge before the final games of championship and (England in Foake's case.)
Would leave Virdi out after Sunday but probably will be Kimber or Barnwell.
Over to you chaps

Is Jamie Smith injured, or playing in the 16.4? What about Amla? I take it Worrall is also injured. That squad/team is an absolute joke, what an insult to cricket fans and team supporters

If Sunday's game against Bucks is anything to go by, we're going to be beaten to a pulp in this competition. That's more like abuse than development.

Dunn dropping out of his second spell against Bucks was apparently due to a touch of cramp and more precautionary than serious. Lawes didn't play then as he got tonsillitis late on in the Warks match.
So who misses out? Amongst this sickly lot, it'll be staggering if all twelve are still fit by the morning! If by some chance they are, I'll say Virdi will be on drinks duty but I doubt it'll make much difference.
I'm one of the two thousand with a ticket for this game. Surrey have let the Guildford ground badly deteriorate and I fear this could be one of Surrey's last games there against a first class county.

Cheers for the info Guildford seems sad if that will be the case, once stewie said he didn't want a championship game being played there maybe then the writing was on the wall.guildfordbat wrote:Anyway, thanks for setting up the thread, JimBob.

Leics win toss and field. Cloudy and a bit muggy now, suspect very hot later.

Totally see what Guildford said about the ground going to ruin on the stream, where have all the stands gone?

Yeah, a few years ago they used to put in temporary raised seating along the Woodbridge Road side of the ground. After that and until now, two or three rows of wooden benches and/or plastic seats all the way along there. Now zippo! Just an empty area with a steward at either end stopping anyone trying to sit or stand there to watch the game.
Why? Well, and no prizes for guessing what the PA announcer blamed it on ... 'Elf 'n Safety! Some worries about a batsman smashing the ball that side of the ground into a spectator - possibly sounds understandable. However, ... that's only the Surrey CCC take on things. The decision didn't stem from Guildford council or Guildford cricket club apparently. Guildford cricket big wigs didn't agree with it and were very unhappy with the reduced attendance allowed (and reduced income although I did my bit to help ) as were a few locals I know who aren't Surrey members and so couldn't get a ticket even though they've been going to watch Surrey play there for donkeys' years. Several spectators and Guildford officials reasonably pointed out that as the wicket was pretty much in the centre of the ground, anyone watching on the Wharf side of the ground (where there is permanent tiered seating) were just as much in the firing line as anyone along the road side would have been. Madness!
Perhaps a truer reason is that Surrey (and Alec Stewart, in particular it's said) don't like playing there and are looking for ways to claim it's not fit for purpose. The outfield was poor as well. Bumpy and uneven in places. Part of that's down to the extreme heat this summer at a ground which traditionally dries quickly. However, if Surrey / Lee Fortis (head groundsman at the Oval and now Guildford since the groundsman there died a couple of years ago) had cared for it half as much as our London base, fielding wouldn't have been a lottery at times.
All very sad and made worse by an extremely ordinary performance.

That's good going but we have to factor in that Rushworth will pick up 3/33 from his 10.

Yeah and I can’t understand the obsession to give Steel the ball. Maybe the plan is the Durham batsmen will get confused being unsure whether to milk him for singles or bash him for boundaries!

Yep, they are real stars travelling that distance, especially given the players Surrey didn't have available and the stuffing we got on Tuesday.

Don't disagree with that, JimBob, but gave up on the dreadful stream and had to go out anyway before Durham were all out and so didn't see enough to properly judge. Fair to say though that it was a good team bowling performance.
Although you'll think I'm plugging my man here (and you may be right ), powerplay bowling at the start of these games is bl**dy difficult. Just two fielders outside the circle for the first 10 overs. Leics won that part of the game hands down on Tuesday and never looked back - we were 32/2 off 10 [Hendicks impressed and was particularly on the money] whilst they were 64/1 at the same stage. Although Dunn got some tap yesterday, he took two wickets whilst Lawes was very tidy with one to leave Durham up against it at 51/3 after their opening 10.
Majid has impressed for someone so young, bowling sensibly and with composure. However, in very different ways, he's been helped by the other Surrey bowlers. Yesterday he joined the party after others had set things up nicely with 4 wickets and continued their good work. On Tuesday, Leics were so ahead when he was on, their main aim was to keep things ticking over without the need for any big shots and daft risks. None of that is to criticise Majid. Just emphasisng it's early days and we still need to see him bowl when the game is evenly poised and could go either way.
Virdi appears to be a concern. Poor on Tuesday - too much down the legside and despatched to the boundary. I could have understood - and expected - him being left out against Durham. However, once picked, I'm puzzled he wasn't one of our seven bowlers to turn his arm.

Clearly his future doesn’t lie at The Oval but I believe he could do a job for another county with a coaching team that believe in him.

Would be horrendously sad if he did leave the game - his treatment the last 12 or so months is already a big blot on this Surrey coaching staffs book in my opinion, if they've pushed him to the point of not wanting to play the game anymore, then I would be lost for words.
A microcosm perhaps of why we struggle to develop quality spinners in this country.
