SURREY VS ESSEX LV= COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE 2023

Surrey have named a 15 man squad for LV=Insurance County Championship game away to Essex.
Sean Abbott returns to the squad after being rested last week against Warwickshire, and Will Jacks in named in a squad for the first time this season after recovering from injury.
Again there is no place in the squad for Ben Geddes, Connor McKerr, James Taylor or Amir Virdi.

You would expect Jacks in for Steel and Abbott in for Lawes but you could see Patel being left out and one of either Roach or Worrall to have a breather it's a lovely dilemma for Batty to face.

Assuming all are fit, I would expect Jacks and Abbott to come in with 2 of Patel, Steel and Lawes dropping out. If you push me, I'll say Patel keeps his place but am far from sure. So very much in line with your thoughts. 

As Essex are genuine title contenders, I don't think Roach or Worrall will be given a breather for this game.

Btw, I saw the stiffs against Middlesex in my neck of the woods today. Blake scored a particularly impressive century, consolidated early on and then fired hard later. Stewie was also watching. Blake will probably be in the frame when/if we lose Pope and Foakes to England.

If the intention was to rest Worrall, why name him in the squad?

I would've settled for 314 when Essex were 218-3, but that 62 for the 9th wicket is infuriating! Very well bowled from Atkinson, surprisingly replacing Worrall, hopefully the weather won't ruin this as it's well set

An extremely good return from Atkinson. A useful 2/24 from Jacks also. 

Their 9th wicket partnership was annoying but I would have more than settled for 314 all out when Essex were 218/3. 

Pleased that we survived the last 2 overs without loss. A wicket then would imo have made it Essex's day. As it is, it still remains to be seen ....

Decent start to day 2 for Surrey as Burns and Sibley take us to 44/0. However, play currently stopped due to rain.

No Harmer yet this morning. He bowled the one maiden last night to end the day. Important we get the balance right in playing him with respect but not being petrified and going totally into our shell. Easier said than done of course.

I am at Chelmsford today chaps - fairly muggy and think it's going to be an on and off day weather wise all the time, pitch looks good even if overhead conditions aren't fantastic for batting though

That boring idiot Don Topley totally jinxed and goofed saying we were well on top when we we were about 100/1. Not only did Sibley get out the very next ball but with us more than 200 behind it was far too soon to making that sort of comment.

163/6 at tea with Steel out in the last over before the break. Lot resting on Foakes and our bowlers to get some more runs.

Nice enough day had, a lot more cricket than I thought I'd get to see - think Surrey got a bit of a raw deal today with the on/off nature of play, and then when we really started going a flurry at lunch seemed to inject some life into the wicket! Essex took advantage, thought Bracewell was the pick of their bowlers

I'd have opened with Jacks, Pope, Smith, Clark and had a go, saved Burns and Sibley for later if we need to shut up shop

Harmer hasn't even bowled and we've made another right mess of this innings, shut up shop now

With the exception of Jamie Smith who played with a maturity beyond his years, no one on either side batted particularly well today. That actually helped Essex who got us to the crease sooner. However, they then weakened their chances by holding Harmer back too long. 

Other than really Pope, we never seemed sure whether we were chasing the runs or not which led to a poor batting display and the fall of too many wickets which put us in a dangerous situation until rescued by Smith's excellent rearguard action with some support from Steel and Clark. Like JimBob, I would have parked the bus from the start and saved my nerves!
