Re: 1872 Cup ∣ The Auld Acquaintance
Thanks bsando
HoweverI'm slightly confused, I shall adopt a Cruella Braverman tone here, ALL RIGHT THINKING DECENT BRITISH PEOPLE ARE APPALLED by your misappropriation of The Annual Slaughter Of The Effeminates as your sub-title.
Even more confusing is your cultural misappropriation of that son of the west, Robert Burns.
Everyone knows that,
"When chapman billies leave the street
And drouthy neebors neebors meet
As market days are drawing late
And folk begin to tak the gate.."
Is a description of Ayr toon cennar on a Friday as the shops shut up and everyone grabs a chippie on the way home to enjoy the Warriors match on the telly.
"Nae man can tether time or tide:
The hour approaches Tam maun ride"
You don't want to be five minutes late; miss kick off and Hornito's first two tries.
If the General can bring himself to opt for a 5:3 split then we could see some fireworks from Glasgow.
Bhatti-Turner-Ragnar (Macbeth- Scouser-Sordoni)
Gray-Cummings (Samuels)
Big Shona-RichieV2-Darge (Mullet)
Hornito (Brimful)
Thompson
Injuries mean that Rowe and McKay will be the wingers. However The General could surprise us all; he could look at using Jordan, Wee Shona, Shug AND Stafford.
Jordan- Wee Shona as centres and Shug at 15.
Or
Shona-Shug and Jordan at 15.
Or
Stafford-Shona and Shug Or Jordan.
The Luvvies almost conspired to throw it away against a totally chaotic 14 man Castres. Aldi Price will have a huge target on his back. There is no recognisable full back for The Effeminates. Nel is 74 years old; and that is not in dog years. Henry Healey won't know what has hit him...it'll be Rory Darge.
Whoever is selected for either side...we are Warriors.
Bring it.

As you spotted, bsando, as well as being a great poet Burns also engaged in missionary work: taking culture to the godless heathens in the east was one of his nobler acts. Many an Edinburgh maiden was more than grateful for his missionary position.

Two strong sides but I think Edinburgh should have enough to win this one. Thompson will be relishing the opportunity to get one over Healy but I think Healy may well be the hero of the day given his form of late.

Re: 1872 Cup ∣ The Auld Acquaintance
Dimples Jones at 14!!!
6/2 split Peterson, Williamson and Venter.
Huw Jones starts on the wing as Glasgow welcome back three Scotland stars in the forward pack for the first 1872 Cup fixture against Edinburgh.
It is the first time in his senior career that Jones has played out wide, although he featured plenty at full-back. The move also allows Franco Smith to welcome Stafford McDowall back at 12, with Sione Tuipulotu continuing to captain from outside centre.
Ally Miller keeps his place in the team after his try-scoring performance against Bayonne, although he shifts to blindside flanker. Rory Darge comes in at openside, with Sione Vailanu in at number eight.
The other changes come in the boiler room, with Scott Cummings and Richie Gray replacing Greg Peterson and young Alex Samuel.
It's a six-two split on the bench, with Peterson, Max Williamson and Henco Venter all named. Ben Afshar is the replacement scrum-half.
There's no place for the injured Matt Fagerson, while Ollie Smith is potentially out long term after a knee injury sustained in France.
Glasgow Warriors: McKay, Jones, Tuipulotu (c), McDowall, Rowe, Thompson, Horne; Bhatti, Turner, Z Fagerson, Cummings, Gray, Miller, Darge, Vailanu.
Replacements: Matthews, McBeth, Kebble, Peterson, Williamson, Venter, Afshar, Jordan.
When will The General start listening to me?

A bit random that Thomson is thrust isn't this having barely played all season. Baptism of fire eh.
. Glasgow to win first leg, Edinburgh second and win the cup - heard it here first!

Was it apparent how much of an effect Thompson had on the team against Bayonne? The General acts in mysterious ways but maybe he's realised having a 10 with a decent kicking game is a Plus

Re: 1872 Cup ∣ The Auld Acquaintance
Bad news for Glasgow and Ollie Smith in particular
The knee injury is as bad as it looked at the time and ligaments are gone. That is his season done unfortunately, he is likely looking at a 9 month lay off.

As much as I've criticised him in a Scotland shirt, thats very unfortunate for him and Glasgow.
Whos left in the back 3 that can cover fullback this season?

Mckay mainly, but Shuggie has also played there very well for Quins in the past, despite being on the wing tonight.
No doubt there will be some positional switches during the game, that is how the general likes to play things

Och aye, so not as bad as all that then
He's not a fullback but i feel Glasgow could really use Steyn coming back soon. I think his stock has gone up since the world cup - super dependable

Is that Kyle Rowe on the wing for Glasgow. Has he managed to refind his form after his torrid time with injury and LI going under?

It is and he has been playing very well.
He will likely be back in the Scotland squad when it is announced in the new year.

Well, pre match nerves beginning...
Maybe some medicinal alcohol
As W C Fields said, " I carry a bottle of whisky with me at all times, to act as a stimulant in case I am ever surprised by a snake. Which I also carry with me."

Glasgow make a solid start
Scrum penalty, lineout leading to penalty and a successful kick at goal.

Strong Glasgow defense - Edinburgh stayed patient though. Amazing the ref didn't see fit for any penalty after so many phases.

Strong start indeed Glasgow but the ref is making it up at scrum time. Those two penalties both then led to Glasgow points.

Glasgow defense incredibly strong. That combined with very few Edinburgh penalties is making it difficult to see where the Edinburgh points are going to come from. Definitely need a spark in broken field from Darcy.

Re: 1872 Cup ∣ The Auld Acquaintance
Big momentum shift - Edinburgh try, Glasgow kick restart out on the full then Edinburgh penalty scrum. We need to capitalise on this purple patch.
Not sure taking a 50m shot at goal was the right decision in this weather particularly given the momentum shift.

Edinburgh make a right mess of the maul and it's halftime
Score is probably fair - Glasgow's much the better team to begin with Edinburgh came back into it.

Re: 1872 Cup ∣ The Auld Acquaintance
Well, I don't think either side looked that good.
Glasgow playing the better rugby but Rowe has only received one pass (which he scored from) and Jones hasn't received the ball in space. The Luvvies are pretty much sticking to one out rugby. Are they scared that if they open up then Glasgow will run riot in the open spaces?
After the first scrum the ref told the Glasgow front row that they had done really well and to keep that up: Nel then messed up the second scrum and the ref's mind was made up for the rest of the evening.
