SURREY VS SOMERSET LV= COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE 2024
Surrey name a 14 man squad for the visit of Somerset, with Gus Atkinson the only addition from last weekend.
Dan Worrall misses out due to a neck issue, with Conor McKerr missing with a groin injury.
Again there is no place in the squad for Ben Geddes or Amir Virdi.
Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Will Jacks and Reece Topley are still at the IPL.
Full Squad:
Burns (c)
Atkinson
Clark
Dunn
Foakes
Lawes
Lawrence
Overton
Patel
Pope
Roach
Sibley
Smith
Steel
Fair to say no one needs to be rested after the last game so the only change I can see is Atkinson in for Lawes, with Dunn and Patel joining him on drink duties.
Over to you chaps

Cheers Jimbob, hoping for more play this week!
Atkinson definitely in, and Dunn & Patel on the bench. The last place probably comes down to Lawes/Steel depending on how the pitch looks.

Of the six seamers in the squad, Dunn is almost certainly intended as back up. However, why include him if we're only planning to play four seamers? That question makes me think we plan to play the other five and that Steel might be for the chop.
There again, that could just be me overthinking it. If Steel does play, I agree that Lawes is the one most likely to miss out although it could be Overton.
Bashir is in the Somerset squad and likely to play along with their new South African signing Pretorius, a paceman who apparently likes to give it a biff when batting (I'm sure Olly approves).

Greenish pitch, but makes no difference if you bowl utter dross like that, going to have to rely on Cameron Steel

That’s Lammonby’s 7th FC 100, but he only has a high score or 116 - a weird quirk.
Not managed to watch any yet - but some naive cricket has let Surrey back in. A run out on Day 1 is criminal, especially when set, and then Lammomby getting out immediately after bringing up three figures.

Looks like the bowlers took heed of the 'constructive criticism'!

Found that a strangely disappointing response! After starting well, seemed to fall in a hole when Bashir came on, apart from Smith, no-one took responsibility to get us to maximum batting points, the pitch did nowt so I can't understand the maiden after maiden, suppose we need to bat on til lunch at the same pedestrian rate to get a lead of over 150 then hope the bowlers have enough time to force a victory

Goochie - I was there yesterday and you are spot on, mate.
Following a very decent morning session, we were right not to try and go ballistic after lunch which could have seen us crash and burn for, say, 250. However, for too much of the time, we played in second gear when it should have been third. As a consequence, we're in a ''non losing'' match position but not necessarily a ''match winning'' one, especially considering Monday's poor weather forecast.
Bashir generally bowled accurately and well to his field emerging with 1/63 from his 31 overs. Although he bowled 4 of those on Friday, still a mammoth spell which may go a long way to saving the game for Somerset. I would much have preferred us to have taken Bashir on more and him taking, say, 3/110. Other than Smith and Steel later on we were too pedestrian.
I accept you can't base your total game play on a weather forecast 48 hours away but, particularly with the improvements in radar forecasting etc, you should still have some awareness of it. We didn't seem to enough.

Definitely, JimBob. However, it's not a surprise that the weather is yuk as I type this! As Goochie and I said about Saturday's play, we should have looked to push the game on more. The same was also true of yesterday morning. Steel showed a touch of aggression in the final stages of Saturday but went totally into his shell yesterday morning. At least there was a bit of biffing from Olly's man Overton.
Our bowling was weird to put it mildly. The seamers clearly don't like the K ball but hey! Just one spell and 4 overs from our overseas fast man Roach whilst Clark and Atkinson respectively bowled 10 and 11 overs in two and three spells. Meanwhile, Lawrence (who opened the bowling) and Steel sent down 40 overs accounting for 5 of Somerset's 6 wickets. [What Virdi might think about that is shown beautifully by King Carlos on the Championship thread. ] Steel was noticeably getting turn and bowled less bad balls than in the past whilst Lawrence is all arms and legs which seems to bamboozle the batsmen as he takes wickets!

On a rain affected final day, Captain Clueless wastes 11 overs allowing Somerset's lead to reach over 100..with 4 wickets still in tact, to get to the new ball, then they fanny about setting a field, wasting even more time!
I actually forgot about the new bonus points rule change, so we only got 3 batting points as well

The win is in real danger of drifting away.
They lead by 151 with 3 wickets in hand and 49 (or 46 if we lose 2 and a bit on changeover) overs left.
Annoying, bl**dy annoying.

Never looked likely at all today Guildford, even when the 7th wicket went down, no attacking or urgency

Absolutely. If only we could have shown over the weekend the tiniest fraction of the urgency we brought to the game in the final hour.
As well as the Kookaburra ball, the poor weather today with the loss of 19 overs contributed to the draw. No doubt about that. However, ultimately we only have ourselves to blame. We knew in advance there was a likely chance of time being taken out of the final day and should have batted with some awareness of that rather than too regularly crawling along in our first dig. By way of example, immediately after reaching his half-ton on Saturday, Foakes faced 25 further balls in which he scored just 5 runs (a two and 3 singles) before being dismissed on the 26th. Get your 50 and then up the tempo - surely?! But no.
On a positive note, I did like Jamie Smith's cameo this evening (45 off 25 for a SR of 180) and wonder if word of it might have reached England's management.
Only fair as well to commend the resilience of Somerset in successfully fighting for a draw despite being behind for most of the game. Gregory's captaincy and two innings were very valuable whilst Aldridge was the best bowler of both sides across the game imo and deserved his 8 match wickets. The stats don't obviously reflect it but Bashir also played an important role. Just 12 runs from his two knocks and a return of 1/76 from our first dig, the only one in which he bowled. However, his 10 not out on day one contributed to a more than handy partnership of 49 with his skipper for the last wicket whilst his bowling return came from a mammoth and very tidy 36 overs which used up so much of the game when Somerset were already on the back foot and would have snatched a hand off for the draw.
