Adam Jones has been warned he might not make Wales’ World Cup cut if he doesn’t keep his weight under control.
The hair-bear prop has been told in no uncertain terms he could miss out on September’s tournament unless his fitness improves.
The Wales camp have a graph that shows when Jones' weight increases his mobility suffers and his tackle count goes down.
He missed the start of this year’s Six Nations Championship because of an elbow injury sustained last January and only started against France because Craig Mitchell was out with a dislocated shoulder.
Mitchell is in pole position to wear the Wales No 3 jersey during the World Cup opener against South Africa in Wellington on September 11 and in the warm-ups, with England and Argentina.
Exeter Chiefs-bound tight-head Mitchell posted a staggering successful tackle count of 10 against England, 13 in Scotland and 10 in Italy.
“He had a great campaign and has given us the depth we were looking for,” enthused Wales coach Warren Gatland.
Jones managed just four tackles in Paris against France, and with only six scrums having taken place in that heavy loss, Gatland has to weigh up the pros and cons of what type of front-row player Wales need to take to the World Cup in New Zealand.
There’s understood to be concern about the weight of Jones with insiders claiming he was about a stone heavier towards the end of last season than he was when he tipped the scales at 19st 7lbs for the autumn internationals.
Thirty-year-old Jones has had long-standing issues with his weight and fitness, but had rectified those problems in recent seasons. The Lions and Ospreys rock has admitted in the past being a chocolate lover.
Gatland was on his case after being appointed Wales boss in December 2008 and only last season threatened to banish him if he turned up overweight for the clash with France.
“Hopefully Adam has been training and his weight is OK and we’ll be able to keep him in the squad,” Gatland had said, before warning: “He knows if he turns up and he’s overweight then I’ll turn around and send him home.”
Jones was known as the 30-minute man at the 2003 World Cup, because that’s how long the renowned scrummager was kept on by then Wales coach Steve Hansen.
Now, with the declining number of scrums in most matches highlighting the need for athletic props, Jones needs to be fitter than ever.
WRU fitness guru Adam Beard stressed 69-times Wales-capped Jones, knee injury victim Shane Williams and television game-show contestant Gavin Henson had to pass rigorous tests on June 30.
“I’ve given them each specific programmes. They can’t slacken off. If any of them do, it’s going to be to their detriment because we have got a lot of competition for places,” warned the straight-talking Australian.
“When they come in, they will be tested to see if they are of standard that they can go to our training camp in Poland. That’s D-Day for them.
“We’ve set them targets and they have to meet those targets. If they don’t, then they don’t come to Poland.
“And if you don’t come to Poland, then you are trouble in terms of not coming to the World Cup.”

Isnt he on his honeymoon at the moment?
It looks like the honeymoon period is over!

looks like there's a few of the Welsh squad that are being monitored closely then! But then that's how it should be. They're professional athletes and should have the discipline to maintain the highest levels of fitness I say. Pies should be banned!

There's no way he wont make the plane, he's too good to be left out and we have nobody else bar Mitchell.

Back to being a scrummaging option as opposed to a mobile tighthead alternative?
Though to be fair, there are no dates on the Gatland quotes, which i think we heard before relating to Adam Jones a while ago after he was recovering from the injury sustained on the Lions tour...! In Particular this one, I think it comes from last season.
“He knows if he turns up and he’s overweight then I’ll turn around and send him home.”
This is after all constructed by Andy Howell, therefor not really an article, more of a mish-mash of Howells bizarre headline creating fantasy world.
The Article also makes it seem as though Adam Jones, Gavin Henson and Shane Williams are the only players on the fitness priority list, which considering the injuries many of the squad have had and more importantly those who have recently had surgery, i would imagine that the three are part of a 40 man list on the medics desk.

Oh cmon, another nothing story. The last the 'stories' from the western mail have all been from the same interview (Henson's training...etc..).
Plus, Adam would have to be on crutches not to make the plane.

It really is a non-story. Adam Jones will be going to the World Cup. If Craig Mitchell is playing better than Adam when the time comes, fair play to him, but Adam Jones will definitely be going too.
He's a big lad, but that's not a revelation, is it?

Before he got injured he was the best THP in the world - even if hes gained some weight since, he will be on the plane.

When you read a headline, and see the name Andy Howells underneath it take nothing seriously.
I just can't understand why the bloke can't leave his desk for five minutes and go and find some great, interesting and worthwhile stories.

It's because he's got it made. He doesn't need to write 'great, interesting and worthwhile stories' - his editor is happy with what he comes up with. He doesn't even have to write well. It's a cushy little number.

Maybe his wife is a 'feeder'?
Seriously though, doesn't Adam get warned about his weight on an annual basis? I'm sure he'll shed any excess pounds in time and I think the days of him being a '30-minute player' are over. He's a very important player for Wales and much more professional these days.
Having said that if he ever gets to look like Duncan Jones in that photo in his suit in the car park then he's in trouble...

Just seems like the rag that WM is, is just trying to put some sort of story that will get people talking.
If WG really said this he's a fool. Comments like this should not be going into the public domain and he should be telling adam Jones in private

Absolutely right - this sort of thing should be kept in-house.

Adam Jones will be fine and he will be on that plane.
Even if he is a bit overweight so what.
I often look at other countries front rows and just see a row of toby jugs.

How can they say Mitchell is in pole position? he hasnt played any rugby since the 6 nations. They love to stir things up dont they.
Also i thought players weight got checked on regularly by the Welsh staff so if he has put on a stone towards the end of the season surely there partly to blame for not keeping an eye on it.

This article, or something similar was banded around when Jones first returned from injury.
He knows he struggles with it and after throwing of the tag of a 40 minute player under Hansen and getting to be one of the best T'heads around I very much doubt he is going to risk that for the sake of a few pies.
Rugby journalism is of a very poor standard these days and they look to blow anything they can out of proportion.
As for Mitchell in pole position as much as I thought he played really well while Jones was out Jones is still our 1st choice T/Head

Ok so we get a fishing rod with a choclate bar attached as bait and get Adam to run after it while doing laps round the field, and if he's a really good boy he can eat the choclate at the end?

Its a very sad scenario, the Western Mail used to be a decent paper but the current mafia of journos have really written it off. I no longer buy it, its worse than the English papers for coverage on Welsh sport, at least they research articles.luckless_pedestrian wrote:maestegmafia wrote:I just can't understand why the bloke can't leave his desk for five minutes and go and find some great, interesting and worthwhile stories.

Thankfully the internet keeps rugby alive.
