Back to T20 - Middx, Essex and Kent
First topic message reminder :
Stuart Meaker has replaced Jade Dernbach in the only change to the last T20 squad for the first 2 of these games, Middlesex tomorrow at home and Essex on Friday at Chelmsford. I am not sure how effective he will be in the format for us but it is excellent to hear he is fit again, how we could have done with him against Gloucestershire. I would imagine the team will be the same except Meaker for Dernbach, although I would be tempted to play Schofield instead of Wilson as he is a better batsman at the moment! I still think we need an extra batsmen though, surely Harinath would be better than Wilson at 6, I know it's not his ideal format but he might surprise people!
I think we need to win 2 out of these 3 matches to keep up our push for the quarter finals.

Just hope Depressed isn't in the portaloos when Schofield hits a 6

Good response, Corporal.
I don't begrudge Ansari his varsity match. I'm just slightly surprised that Adams felt so benevolent. I hope it's not part of some sinister conspiracy to play ''he who shall not be named'' and provoke Depressed ....

The opening partnership that was so good last year is consistently firing blanks this year.
Worth a punt on Roy at the top? with RHB/Davies dropping down to three?

Re: Back to T20 - Middx, Essex and Kent
Well the fact we are a batsmen short is going to be highlighted again by the fall of early wickets.
I can't think of many occasions we have been less than 3 down by 10 overs this year!

Re: Back to T20 - Middx, Essex and Kent
My theory is that our batsmen are good at going a consistent 6-7 an over, which is very useful for 40 overs. But we fall apart when attempting to go faster than this in T20s. - Could explain our good showing in the 40 over comps this year, but a relatively poor T20 campaign.

Churchy says they keep doing requests over the tanoy at the ground. I hope they don't broadcast one from Depressed!

150 - 4 off our 20 overs.
Disappointing last 2 overs for Surrey. I would have expected The Brain to accelerate the scoring given the time he had been in and that we had wickets in hand. Always easier though from the keyboard.
I wouldn't have thought our total is enough. We're certainly going to have to bowl and field well ....

Listening to radio it sounds as though pitch is not the easiest to score off - (either that or the Brain was not engaged on the task in hand)

Re: Back to T20 - Middx, Essex and Kent
We were doing well but then disaster for Meaker! He drops van Jaarsveld off the last ball of Arafat's 5th over and then goes for 15 in his first (the 6th) over!
Now Schofield comes on- oh no, Depressed - don't ....

Re: Back to T20 - Middx, Essex and Kent
Well beaten by 6 wickets with eleven balls to spare.
Never thought 150 was enough. We really should have pushed for more even if it meant losing wickets. As JimBob said earlier, The Brain played a Championship type holding innings which prevented Wilson and Schofield getting a bat. Wilson is dreadfully out of form but Schofield is a basher and we could really have done with him in the last few overs.
I said at the interval that we would need to bowl and field well. Nannes got off to a flyer and had Kent 8 -2. Then the wheels came off despite, for once, good bowling from Arafat. Meaker dropped van Jaarsveld early on and then to compound matters bowled some - at best - ordinary stuff.
As for Schofield - well, I suspect someone who was actually at the ground might be commenting later ....

Re: Back to T20 - Middx, Essex and Kent
Has to be the worst ever T20 batting by De Bruyn
Maynard 76 of 46 balls
Mahmood 49 off 36 balls
van Jaarsveld 62 off 39 balls
de Bruyn 25 off 45 balls
Should've been another 35/40 runs in a 'normal' T20 inns

Re: Back to T20 - Middx, Essex and Kent
Performance today serves to strengthen case for giving Ansari a decent run in the team for limited overs matches (despite my willingness to let him play for Cambs as mentioned earlier in the thread).
He top scored for Cambs today batting at No 3 and then bowled 10 overs for 19.
He probably wouldn't have batted today if had been in the Surrey side - but he might well have bowled at less than 17 an over. In which case we might have been in with a shout...
I'm sure I heard Churchy in the commentary today talking about the Brain leaving several deliveries alone - and I'm pretty sure this was in the last third of the innings when we had seven wickets in hand.

Re: Back to T20 - Middx, Essex and Kent
Just noticed a minor classic on the Surrey website, talking in advance about today's match:
"The Lions head into Sunday's tie in good shape, having won their last two matches (in which play was possible) in the competition. Surrey will be keen to continue this rich vein of form when they face the Spitfires on Sunday, as both sides look to make headway in a very competitive Southern Group."
"Winning 2 T20 matches in a row" = a rich vein of form.

Corporal - you must appreciate that this rich vein of form would have continued had it not been for today's ''slip to defeat'' (tonight's website headline) ....

Well we're still in with a shout, only 3 points behind the leaders and played a game less than 3 teams.
Did you lot see Gloucestershire's score today? Mental! I bet our best friend Chris From Stroud is a happy bunny this evening!
