Unusual Rugby Facts
First topic message reminder :
Thought this would be a good long term topic that could maybe run and run.
I’ll start it off with this.
Did you know that Nigel Walker apparently he never missed an international tackle?
I find it hard to believe but apparently it’s true.

Rubbish!
14 minutes 55 seconds, he attempts a tackle on a player, bangs his head against his knee and knocks himself out.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQeX60neNGU
That's not a completed tackle.
How on earth did come across this Shifty? Tell me you didn't trawl through old footage to check?
In his defence, he still gets the guy down. I think it's a completed tackle.
Dont be so silly thats my youtube channel, lol.
I'd argue Walker showed awful tecnique and used the side of his head in the tackle, while the Scotland player actually lost his balance and fell over.

You don't need a Welsh granny to play for Wales, either.

Shifty wrote:In the past Wales and England have teamed together to defeat Ireland and Scotland on special occasions.
All Four Unions wanted to do these games however both Scotland and Ireland agreed they'd be together before Wales and England had entered the discussion. Neither Scotland or Ireland were prepared to team with England under any circumstances.
Wales and England had the last laugh though as they have beaten the Ireland and Scotland team on every occasion the teams faced off!
The first game was played on 31st December 1955 in Landsdowne Road, Ireland to celebrate the opening of a new stand. The final score was 18-15 to Wales and England.
The second game was 17 October 1959 to celebrate the Twickenham Jubilee, England and Wales won 26 - 17.
Whichever team sided with Wales was expected to be victorious as Wales enjoyed their first "Golden Era" in the 1950's!
They did it again this year, half the Welsh team was born in England

I've been inspired to join the forum on the weight of it, the Alexandre Dumoulin story is a belter!

Re: Unusual Rugby Facts
I'm sure most of us here know this story, but I'm posting it for the benefit of those who don't.
In 1863 Blackheath Rugby Football Club was a founder member of The Football Association which was formed in London with the intention of deciding on one definitive form of "Football" which would be played by all.
At that time it wasn't certain which code of rules the FA would adopt. They had narrowed it down to either the Cambridge Rules (soccer) or Rugby Rules.
Mr Francis Maule Campbell of the Blackheath club was a member of the committee and at the meeting he argued that hacking was an essential element of 'football' and that to eliminate it would "do away with all the courage and pluck from the game, and I will be bound over to bring over a lot of Frenchmen who would beat you with but a week’s practice."
Campbell withdrew Blackheath over the hacking issue and other rugby clubs followed his lead and did not join the Football Association. This was believed to be the decisive factor in the FA adopting the Cambridge Rules and thus Association Football was born.
The RFU was formed separately in 1871.
