Most Hated Songs
First topic message reminder :
Following on from Aberdeensteve's thread about your most favourite tunes, is there a song or maybe a list of them that just drive you mental when you hear them - a bit like someone scraping fingernails down a blackboard. Let's form a list of the songs we all should avoid for the sake of our sanity. You'll be doing the public a service. Here's some suggestions from me to kick things off:
Lady Gaga - Bad Romance
Rihanna - Any of her songs cause it's her nasal voice that is GBH to my ears.
Jessie J - Do It Like A Dude
James Blunt - You're Beautiful
Robbie Williams - Angels

Good call on the 4 Non Blondes. Talk about a vague protest song!

A lot of musical dogsheet came out in the '90s - I particularly hated that stupid fake reggae bollix that came out such as "Informer" by Snow, Chaka Demis & Pliars, Shaggy etc Absolute rubbish...and insulting to the good proper reggae that exists.
Also Michael Bublé - who the feck buys that sheet!?

This might ruffle a few feathers, but I hate all Beyonce's stuff. She is the least subtle singer around. She blasts out the notes from the first line of the first verse. Destiny's Child, fair enough, But her solo stuff it awful.

Lucky - I don't like Beyoncé. Firstly, she blatantly copies Tina Turner's moves and mannerisms on stage. Secondly, she doesn't sing - she shouts and warbles the notes which is truly awful. I'm sure there's a decent voice in her somewhere but she spoils it but trying too hard. I'm sick of these (predominantly female) singers who just won't sing a note, they have to show off and go up and down the scales just to sing one note.

There's nothing worse, is there? It's like those godawful guitar solos you used to get in the mid-'80s that were more about showing off how fast your fingers moved than playing something that sounds good.

The names Mariah Carey and Leona Lewis spring to mind...
Add another to the list of rubbish - Celine Dion and the Titanic song. Just seemed that they went into the studio and decided to put every effect they could find into that one recording. There might be a decent song under there, but the production is more over-blown than anything Meatloaf and Jim Steinman did (and I always assumed there was a certain amount of tongue in cheek with Bat out of Hell...)
Agree regarding the mock reggae - totally undermines the brilliance of Marley, Jimmy Cliff etc.

Believe by Cher - primarily for those bloody awful vocals, but also because its a naff song.

Bad comparison.
I take it you also view violin, sax or other instrument solos as nothing more than showing off?
Theres a BIG difference.
Yes solos are indeed a showcase for a musician's skill, but they also serve the song, enhancing it, as well as giving the singer a break. Some of the best songs ever recorded feature beautifully crafted guitar solos...and I'm not just talking about 80s metal.
When soul and R&B singers hang on to a single word, going up and down the scale, as Cari said, its irritating because it doesn't do anything for the song. All it does is show off their vocal range and lung capacity.

Re: Most Hated Songs
dyrewolfe, I thought I was making clear that I was referring to a particular type of guitar solo that, while showing that the guitarist could move his fingers quickly around the fretboard, just did not sound good, which should be the point. For your information I love jazz and a sax solo by, say, Sonny Rollins, can be wonderful, just as a good guitar solo can be. George Harrison's solo on 'Something' is the most eloquent guitar solo I've ever heard.
How dare you assume, based on your misreading of a single post, that I don't know the purpose of a solo, and that I think all solos are showing off!

Beethoven's Ninth, complete rubbish whereas Cher Lloyds Swagger Jagger is, as Guru Lord Simon of Cowell might say, sheer genius. They will be singing this down in the Staines Massive for the next 200 years, assuming the world doesn't implode.

For crying out loud! I didn't say all '80s guitar solos are awful, just the ones where the fact that the end result sounded awful didn't matter as much to the guitarists as the fact that they were showing how fast they could play.

Re: Most Hated Songs
May I then point you in the direction of such virtuosos as Joe Satriani and Steve Vai?
They're two of the most famous "shredders" ever and most of their stuff is perfectly listenable. Okay, if you're not into that kind of music, you won't like it anyway, but they're proof that fast guitar music can sound good.
Eddie Van Halen is another good example. The most recent exponents of this kind of stuff would be Dragonforce (ridiculously fast solos but still very listenable if you're into metal music).
Just out of interest, have you listened to any bluegrass country music or flamenco? They have very fast guitar playing too.
Anyway, back on topic.
Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On.
Come to think of it, anything by Celine Dion, period.

dyrewolfe, I'd like to be able to give you examples of the kind of solo I mean, but I can't. I agree that some fast guitar solos can be great: John McLaughlin's stuff with Miles Davis, for example.
I haven't heard that Cher Lloyd's single, but by all accounts it's terrible. Once I hear it, I'll add it here no doubt!

Musical masturbation. BB King can emote better feeling with one held note while Satriani, Vai, Malmsteen et al give the fret board a hand job.
Flamenco... Now yer talking!

Feeling is all well and good, but I appreciate some fretboard fireworks and the technical ability / dexterity required to play legato runs, pinched harmonics and sweep picking etc.
Me, I'm pretty good with solid, chugging palm-muted riffs and on a good day can manage simple solos, arpeggios, hammer-ons and pull-offs (insert your own jokes here) but thats about it.
Would never even attempt to play bluegrass or flamenco.
Anyway, back to songs we really hate:
I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston
Don't Want To Miss A Thing - Aerosmith
Funny how many awful songs are used as film soundtracks...

Re: Most Hated Songs
Ah, now Whitney Houston's singing on that song is no better than warbling all around the given note. Her approach is to bellow a single note for a long time. That doesn't demonstrate that you have a good voice, it demonstrates that you can shout in tune.

Ahem, I would class that as a hated cover version. The original was perfect and not overplayed.
I appreciated good fretwork, but I find fretwork for the sake of fretwork all technique and no art. When it comes to excellent guitar playing I'd rather listen to Richard Thompson than the likes of Vai.

I concur... the original I think was one of the most perfect vocal songs ever, before she lost her voice.
Now songs I dislike, generally female vocals from last few years that came via the talent shows on telly, and am not keen on rap, else I think most songs are good.

Joss Stone's new single (that they're playing far too often on Radio 2). It's embarrassing. She's not a fifty-year-old black woman from the Deep South, she's a twenty-something white girl from Devon. She's making a fool of herself and no one's told her.

You just did. To be honest I haven't heard any Bieber songs except a bit of that one that goes "baby...baby...baby...ooh" and that was dogsh it.
Kaiser Chiefs "Ruby" - not their best song and yet it seems to get the most airplay. It's really annoying as well.

I agree about 'Ruby' Cari, it's annoying as because that song gets the most airplay people get annoyed with them and say they don't like Kaiser Cheifs when they have a load of better songs than that which people don't bother listening to.
'I predict a Riot' and 'Ruby' are their two most well known, but two of their worst ones IMO.

I liked "Riot" and Oh My God...until Lily bloody Allen ruined it soon afterwards...
Hope she's a better fashion guru than she was a singer.

"Unchained Melody"-the vile Righteous Brothers version. Matt Monro's version is sublime and a template to all the dross that have followed and are found wanting.
"Big Yellow Taxi"-Joni Mitchell, I could strangle her over that silly bit at the end. Is this really the same singer that did "Coyote"?
