Scottish Football, What's the point?
First topic message reminder :
With the SPL unable to attract such "superstars" or rather deadbeats as Neil Danns and it looking increasingly unlikely that any Scottish team will ever qualify again for the first round proper of the Champions League, not to mention the deplorable skill levels and poor entertainment returns is there any point in this tinpot and frankly laughable league continuing?
Discuss.

I don't think anyone has said there has ever been a bias, the best players in the national team are always those who played down south, however although it was only against Cyprus it's good to see the Levein wasn't afraid to pick the majority of his players from outside the Old Firm and SPL, I don't think McLeish or Smith would have been brave enough to do that, the Daily Rangers or Celtic Courier would be all over him.
Perhaps there is some truth and reason in omitting so many players from the SPL.

JDandfries, the major difference between the SPL and the EPL,is that if SKY got bored(which it wont,as the EPL is what sells sky),ESPN would jump straight in,they'd see the numbers of asian viewers and fans of EPL clubs and the advertsing streams potential...where as the SPL has CELTIC and RANGERS(for now at least),who appeal to a few aussies, new zealanders, canadians and americans.....mainly in boston.the major problem for the majority of foreign owned clubs is they are used as cash cows to pay the debts of foreign sports clubs.if they were'nt foreign owned...they'd be huge..liverpool without the yanks, man utd,arsenal,spurs,chelski....and if and when scottish football does fold DO NOT EXPECT THE ENGLISH TO PICK UP THE PIECES,YOU'LL BE INDEPENDENT,GET ALEC TO GIVE YOU SOME OF THE OIL MONEY......

Come on shaun..admit it ..you are just a bit upset that you probably have Mcleish, the inventer of Auntie Football, as your manager.
I see what is happening in Scotland as a positive. Hopefully the SPL will re-invent itself as a competitive league.

Truth be told if you put Cardiff and Swansea into the Welsh football premiership youd have the same situation you have with Scottish football, 2 teams totally dominant winning lots of trophies but none of them worth anything outside their own country, with no one really caring.
At least Cardiff and Swansea did it right from the start and gave themselves a chance of being the very best and competing against the very best. Even though they might not win many trophies.

Totally ignorant or oblivious to Celtic's World Wide fanbase
Scottish Football can't help the fact SKY plow the vast majority of it's cash into English football, in 1992 before the major cash injection their wasn't much of a difference between the top sides, in 2003 Celtic had the 6th highest wage bill in British Football but the introduction of foreign owners sky rocketed player wages and with it more money from SKY, Scotland is tiny compared to England but has two football institutions that if on a level playing field would be as monumental as Manchester United in terms of their World Wide appeal

Re: Scottish Football, What's the point?
My theory of Scottish Football being rubbish/dead is coming home to roost.
I find the "Global Support" thing hilarious though, as they (if they even exist) hardly contribute to the coffers of the Old Firm in any significant way do they? They are only "plastic" fans holding on to some historical connection.
Like all those Man U fans in India etc, they might be numerous, but their "support" means nothing because they contribute nothing.
Being proud of a wage bill isn't very clever either, look what it did for Rangers and Leeds. It's a millstone if you aren't getting the money in the support it.
The OF/Scottish Football is going downhill very fast indeed, and it's hilarious.
Hopefully Levein will see sense and ban Scottish based players from International selection

Re: Scottish Football, What's the point?
I'm actually coming round to the idea that you might be right SR. I don't think there's another nation in the world that wields the sporting self destruct button with quite as much aplomb as we do.
I don't find it quite as amusing as you pretend to though. 140 years of wee team jealous bile is being poured all over the Rangers corpse at the moment and it's not very appetising outside the wee team psyche. The lunatics have been left to take over the asylum and negotiate Scottish footballs marketability for the next few years...oh dear!!
What I would dispute though is that the "plastic fans in foreign lands" probably DO contribute more than you think especially via merchandise purchasing.

Re: Scottish Football, What's the point?
How many of the plastic fans buy from official merchandise stores where the money finds it's way back to the actual clubs?
This "worldwide fanbase" didn't help Rangers dying on their backside did it?

Re: Scottish Football, What's the point?
Why's it funny to see the problems that scottish football is having? Such a narrow minded view point. Scottish football isn't fantastic, but it obviously means a lot to the fans of those clubs.

Re: Scottish Football, What's the point?
It's funny because Scottish football deserves to be in this situation.
A poor quality , overpriced product played at the wrong time of year with dismal overpaid underskilled players, who think they are better than they are who play for clubs who are deluded that they are big and important when in fact they are small insignificant and irrelevant.
It's the best thing that could happen to Scottish football as change might actually come out of it. If it stayed the way it was it was just going to be another Welsh or Irish league.
