Name a good rugby journalist
Andy Howells and Stephen Jones regularly cop abuse on these boards for the drivel that they appear to come out with. In Scotland, we must have the most negative journalist in thw world in Ian Morrison who week after week (thankfully, he seems to take summer off) in the Scotland on Sunday says how bad things are for Scottish rugby, we're doomed, blmaes the SRU for the E-coli outbreak. Ok, he maybe has a point in some cases but there are some successes but, be it Edinburgh, Glasgow or the national sides' success, he never acknowledges this. If I was cynical, I would say that he has a hidden agenda.
Hand on heart what can any of the three journalists I have just listed, say that they have done positively for the game.
On a more sane note, do we dislike these guys because we think that they talk guff or are we, in a dark corner of our minds, scared that they are coming out with the truth but it is just a truth that we don't like or want to hear?

You know i think Eddie Butler has actually been pretty good in the Observer, he is honest, knows a reasonable amount but is quite humble, doesn't direct too much personal opinion, more informational. Likes to find interesting stories too...
To be fair though I really had to think about this question as the quality of journalism when not just pragmatic fact is appalling.

The problem with Eddie Butler's articles is that he writes like those god-awful monologues he reads out before the 6 Nations about 'bygone eras where mud-splattered leviathons engaged in gladitorial combat...'.maestegmafia wrote:You know i think Eddie Butler has actually been pretty good in the Observer, he is honest, knows a reasonable amount but is quite humble, doesn't direct too much personal opinion, more informational. What are people looking for in journalism. Thats a better question.
To me the point of sports journalism is twofold:
1) To give an account of the games or events that took place so that those who missed it will be informed
2) To generate discussion and debate by expressing subjective opinions on the games/events that take place.
Both are vital jobs. We need both.
