Let's have a poll on who we think will win The Open Championship

I'm limited to the number of names I can put up here but I'll start with a list of the first 10 that come to MY mind (I'm sure I'll forget someone) - I can edit the poll if people think of someone I've forgotten

So - who will lift the Claret Jug this year

What does a Guardian journo know however? Just a margin more than the average reader usually.

Can't see it being Poulter, his form is terrible. Then again, I don't think many would have predicted last years winner!

Head says Donald or McIlroy.

Heart says Westwood.

What's wrong with that? Poulter is in possession of a fantastic short game, much under rated, not sure him being that straight though.

They know how to get offended on other peoples behalf and how to be wetter than Graham Norton's handshake.

I have no problems with Poulter winning it. He deserves something like that as far as I'm concerned... but that said I still say Guardian journos talk out of their brown, smelly, star shaped exit wound.

No arguments there LJ, I know it's trendy to knock the Daily Mail, but in my opinion The Guardian and it's miniscule circulation is an equally bad rag.

Hobo. The thing is I think you talk as much rudey poo as you think I talk.

The difference is what I say is my opinion, offensive to your liberal sensibilities though that may be, rather than just spouting the populist nonsense that a guardian journo or yourself seems to produce.

In addition it seems that the mod/admin team would like to be insulting, or at least supportive of those being insulting, today. Care to comment on the breach of the rules you no doubt helped set and enforce (but ignore whenever you feel like it)?

LJO - this is a thread about the open championship. Could we please discuss who you think is going to win and not your views on me, the Guardian or anything else off topic.

The Daily Mail is a great paper if you want to learn about air/food/water giving you cancer or anything at all to do with Princess Diana.

As for the Guardian, it's useful with it being a broadsheet. Whenever I'm doing some painting or anything that could ruin the carpet it comes in really handy to lay down on the floor.

Who still reads newspapers these days anyway? Hopefully this latest NotW piece of scumbaggery will drive their numbers down, along with the rest of the rubbish who've given the story little or no coverage in the hope we won't notice, simply because they've probably done just as bad or even worse.

Charl Swartzel will win The Open

Donald. Fiver says so.

Kaymer for me. Played so well the 2nd half of last year and has to find his form at some point...

KJ Choi because I reckon I'll get decent odds...Won the Players this year too, and a good 3rd place in the Masters.

Other than him I think Jason Day is in with a shout. He's shown great major form this year, and if he keeps getting there or thereabouts it will happen for him.

Tend to think it will be another first time winner this year.

I've voted for Westwood (if only votes were sufficient!) but I think another young player will come through; having already won regular events, step up Matteo Manassero or Jason Day.

With the smile back on his face and a good placing in the US Open I can see Sergio seriously contend. Worth a few sheets each way.

Sergio is one of my fancies, but his price is a bit of a put off, as low as 20's in some places.

No value when you consider you could have got 100/1+ for him at the previous two majors

I have a sneaky feeling that it could be another 'semi outsider' again like Quiros or one of the Molinari's. Not a rank outsider but not a superstar either.

How about young Matteo for an outside bet? Won the Amateur so knows his way round links courses.

I thinks its to open to call. anything could happen. But i do think it will be someone unheralded. The Open seems to have a bit of history with surprise winners. I say an American with little history or a random european.

And whoever said the Daily Mail gets Diana headlines, that is wrong its all the Daily Express, and thats a shocking paper, as is the Mail. Put the term Be careful because - in front of each headline, it works quite well.

Any idea of likely weather conditions for next thurs/fri.
Remember what happened last year.I suspect another good showing from Rock maybe top 20 but its anybodies

Rock seems to be gathering a lot of support lately. Suspect putter and much will depend how tricky the pins are but he's worth a quid each way at 125/1.

I'll probably pick a random Septic or too, probably a Saffa and a couple of Brits/Europeans at long odds. Form and rankings count for very little in The Open.

Ill back them to win on Betfair - also thinking of adding Stewart Cink to the list, not a daft bet at 180/1

Voted for Westwood out of those listed mainly for the reason that it'd be nice to shut those haters up.
Equally would like Sergio to win it.

In the end it'll probably none of the above.

Shame there is no other option ie Padraig Harrington dare I dream. It really is there for someone to grab like Rory did at Us Open

Would love Sergio to win it. Think he will threaten but ultimately a top 10 finish is more realistic.

Day and Schwartzel stand out for me.

If it's calm and sunny, then an in-form ball-striker with length, favourites being McIlroy and Westwood. If it's wet and/or windy, then anyone at all... I'd go for any randomer outside the world top 50, but who knows which one.


As for papers... the Guardian is rubbish, but the Observer is much better, has its own opinions without being either in-your-face preachy or bland. Bit like The Times/Sunday Times in reverse, it's the weekday one of those which is good.

I'd love to see Westwood win it but i have a sneaky feeling for McDowell so have voted for him

Doesn't seem that there's much support for Martin Kaymer, I'm no mega-mind in golf, but surely he stands a great chance, no?

I'm a little surprised too that there isn't much support for Kaymer. Also surprised that Lee is so far ahead of Luke in the poll at the moment

Me three. Luke's short game on this quirky course must count for something? Another who similarly has a great short game just now is KJ Choi. Good e/w'er I reckon.

I just think that with the dry weather the fairways will be even more bouncy than usual... and that only the straightest of drivers will be in the very short grass. As a result I tend to favour Westwood and McIlroy at this event.

If ever there was a player whose game was set up for an Open course this is he....

I've a question, if for example you were to say that say you thought Robert Rock wasn't going to win the Open and gave a few reasons as to why...., does that make you a Robert Rock "hater" and "doubter" or do those terms only apply when certain posters talk about certain players?
Donald, Kaymer or McIlroy for me but there will be at least one yank in the mix as well. Johnson or Watney maybe. If you were just talking about who your best e/w bet was then Westwood would have to be the man.

It'll be interesting to see if McIlroy has the up and down game to win this. He wont have soft greens to throw darts at in this Open so I doubt his GIR will be as high. So he'll have to rely on his short game a little more. Its not a bad short game but its not quite as good as his long game.

As a lad from a links course background who shot the course record at Portrush whilst still in short trousers I reckon he has the game for it.
