Sorry, but no.
But then I had optimism before 2007, look were that got me! Maybe my honest belief that QF's is best we will do will inspire fates to make me look stupid again.

Yes fake nottins, everything you disagree with is a WUM.
To the OP; Probably we won't win. You are putting accolades on this team, talking about them being second only to NZ, that they have done nothing to earn over the past two years. They have not delivered consistent performances over a period of time since 2009.
But I really believe that the players and supporters shouldn't be too negative. World Cups are unpredictable. It is something that can be accomplished if luck is on our side.
Let's just not run ahead of ourselves and hype the team up, because we have achieved nothing yet. All of this has echoes of 2007 when an Irish public expected miracles of a team that had failed to deliver a Six Nations trophy; that had failed to win when it really mattered.
This Ireland team haven't won when it really matters since 2009 either, so let's not blow that trumpet too loudly.

Do I think we will win? No Do I believe we can win? I don't see why not. Also yor comment that NZ are the only nation better than us is ridiculous, nothing over the last 2-4 years has shown this.

If is a big word and on paper we have a great backline but they were awful for parts of the 6N mainly against Wales. There are too many ifs and maybes around this team. Apologies for the Nz comment I misread your post.

Depends what piece of paper you're looking at. If you're looking at the iRB rankings piece of paper, there are three teams better than us.

Love it to happen but no chance - happy to get out of the group and see from there. Once it's the knockout stage anything can happen. There again "anything" will probably be losing by a point to an "unfancied" side

Wow Notch, not like you to get so touchy. I thought the article was poorly written and can't really tell if the OP is being serious. No I don't agree with him that Ireland can win the world cup... Or win it on paper, whatever he's getting at. I don't class everything I disagree with as a WUM, try staying on topic to the discussion will you?
I suppose you have a point though; i:e if luck is on your side. Avoid New Zealand and France like the plague and you could be in with a shout but lets face it you're not a world cup team. I also think Aus and SA to be better teams and have a better chance at winning the tournament than Ireland.

Except our actual record against them is nowhere near as good. We've won 3 out of our last 10 against them, all in Ireland. I think we can beat Australia or South Africa, definitely. We should be targeting a win against one of these and a semi-final place. Italy could also turn us over if we're not careful. Let's just not get carried away.

Last time out was different we had too much expectency on us and with any good irish team we cant handle the expectency also our whole regime leading up to the WC was poor we went on to the field like body builders but nothing else

IM goin to go out on a limb and suggest only 3 northern hemisphere sides will make it to the quarters ireland france and a 50/50 call between england and scotlandnottins_jones wrote:Notch wrote:Yes fake nottins, everything you disagree with is a WUM.

Really no. Sorry.
It's possible i guess. Anything's possible or i'd not be interested in sport. But i would be amazed to see the team reach the final myself. And astonished to see them win the thing.
Yes we have some wonderful players, yes our team can play fabulous rugby but where do you get the idea that Ireland are about to beat New Zealand in New Zealand? And i do believer that NZ will be in the final.

Seriously?
I've been to 12 Ireland games since the last World Cup, I'm always the only person cheering in my section. Wanting your team to win, isn't the same as ignoring reality. I believe it's possible we win the World Cup. I also believe it's possible we exit at the group stage. We might click and if we do i seriously believe we have a very good team. If we play like we did in the first four games of the Six Nations, we'll make no impact at all.
Your posts just come across as being a bit arrogant and dismissive of other teams.

Eh? You think Wales were where now? And is there a particular reason you're mentioning Wales in a discussion about Ireland winning the world cup?
I think France, England and Scotland will make the quarters. Not so sure about Ireland. They'll be blown off the park by Australia and could slip up against the Italians.

And we will beat Aus by 3-5 point

You can't seriously think you are contenders for this world cup after a 6N performance that saw you narrowly beat Italy and Scotland. Fail to beat France at home and conjure nothing against Wales.
You played well against England but you can't think one performance is reasonable grounds to bet 100 quid on winning the world cup? Surely not?!!

I find your implication that I can't be a proper fan because I dont think Ireland will win the world cup rather insulting!
I can assure you that in my years of following Ulster, Ireland and the Lions home and away I have been a very vocal and loyal supporter, but that support hasn't caused me enough brain damage so believe you £100 isn't as good as lost. Sorry!

Either way, it does not look good. Where's Declan Kidney when you need him...
Its seriously like we learnt nothing from 2007. We were nearly beaten by Georgia!
Ideally we'll keep quiet, fly in under the radar and by the time the other teams realise we're a threat... it's already too late!

I have seen this phrase used a bit "we are due a..."
I'm not sure but it appears to be used by the Irish / Welsh more than anyone else. Is it a local phrase in rugby?
Why do people use it? Do they seriously believe that they are due anything? On what basis are they due this thing?
Surely NZ, if any team could be said to be due anything, is due a good RWC tourney based on their consistently high ranking over the years.
I think Ireland are a little past their best and don't have much chance of winning the RWC. I think in NZ, Australia will be too strong (they do play here a lot as a team and as individuals probably have 2-4 games here a year.) Personally I would love Ireland to beat Aus as I see them (Aus) as the biggest obstacle to NZ winning it

Re: My Fellow Irish Fans Do Any Of You Really Beleive We Can Win It This Year
Honestly, I think it would be quite delusional to even dream that we could beat New Zealand for the first time ever in New Zealand in, or for if it's the final, the world cup. Believing in your team and cheering them on no matter what the odds is one thing but putting €100 (or £'s) on us winning it is just plainly a massively poor investment.
However, I would say that "if" we beat Australia in the group I would fully expect us to get to the final after that owing to the likely obstacles of Wales and England and our recent good results against them. Whether we beat Australia is another thing but I'd say we'd have a good chance due to our very close games against them in past world cups and recent games between our sides. In saying that, no doubt Australia would be favourites.
As Notch said, it seems some people learnt nothing from four years ago. There are far less people as insanely optimistic as back then but there's still a few. And at least back in 07 the delusional had a very good six nations and autumn 06 victories against SA and Australia to back up their beliefs. What does the 2011 vintage have? An average six nations including a terrible and utterly clueless performance against Wales (illegal try or not) and an even worse performance against South Africa in the autumn. OP, to my mind, the only thing you could possibly be basing your unflinching belief that we'll win the world cup is surely on that England performance? As impressive as it was, it was at home, was 1 of 5 games against the six nations (and the rest we were average at best) and it was to stop England winning the grand slam in our back garden and there's no better motivation than that.
I hope I'm not coming across as too negative. As I said, I can easily envisage a situation where we "could" get to the final but I think it's more probably than not that we won't, and I think it's delusion to think we could beat New Zealand in the final (and if we got to the final, it's them we'd meet)!

No, I think someone pretending to be Irish whilst making ridiculous posts is suspicious . Especially when a pattern emerges of the poster saying something along the lines of "I'm Irish I think we will win the WC" or "I'm Irish I think the hardest player in the world is Irish" or "I'm Irish I think the standout player at the WC will be Irish"

Re: My Fellow Irish Fans Do Any Of You Really Beleive We Can Win It This Year
Obviously the OP is a WUM but I'll bite anyway
I think we are capable of beating anyone except New Zealand who are simply too good for us if they play anywhere near their best. On that basis we certainly can win it IF we play to our full potential and some of the other results go our way. Certainly this is the most confident I've been going into a WC since 2007.....
Being realistic though it is going to be extremely tough to break our duck against the SH teams away from home although we have pushed Australia very close in recent times and have faired well against SA. This is also our strongest ever squad of players so we certainly have as good a chance as any of the other NH teams.

The OP is English. Why?
I have never heard an Irish person saying "Come on you _____"
Its a distinctly English thing to say / chant / sing.....
