Re: IRB World Rankings ... Part 1
Informative thread Portnoy. So, how much would Wales need to beat Australia by to cause a significant upwards movement in these Rankings? (forgetting all other results for a moment). Just curious as we will not get points from Samoa, Arg or NZ. Also my apologies for being too lazy to work it out myself at the moment.

Portnoy was unceremoniously dumped into a void for speaking out of turn on v2 mickey.
However as each game has five alternative RWC outcomes, it would be extremely complex to take it more than one game at a time. So best wait until the the Wales v Oz game.
Its a complex game what with twelve or so teams competing competing over a number weeks and building in allowances for non-official internationals soon makes the calculations complex.
Wales v Australia? If Wales win they'd certainly get ranking points.
Just curious as we will not get points from Samoa, Arg or NZ.
Confuses me a little. But I guess that means a lack of confidence rather than anything else.Or a lack of understanding of the way the process works.

Re: IRB World Rankings ... Part 1
Samoa and Argentina are lower than Wales, I was under the impression we couldn't gain any points from winning, but of course lose points from losing to them?
And Portnoy in the black hole, really? I'm guessing he peed everyone off by talking up Leicester too much.

Wales have loads of points to lose in the rankings as well as those to win. The rule of thumb is that so long as if team a is more than ten points ahead of team b then they can't gain points but they can lose them. But team b can gain.

In other words, settle for nothing less than 10 points wins, against all 4 (although against NZ we'd be lucky to lose by 10). Ta.

Re: IRB World Rankings ... Part 1
Perhaps I should tell you a joke.
A Welshman, South African and Englsihman walks into a bar.
The Welshman says "we are going to be number 2 in the world,"
The South African says, "That's nothing, we will be number one in the world."
The Englishman sit down and looks rather downbeat, so the Welshamn asks the Englishman what is wrong.
The Englishman says "Nah, we are still holding on to past achievements"

Well if you are suggesting 4th or a possible 3rd is it that unreasonable for someone to suggest that a GS winning team that has beaten you on the last 2 occasions to finish 2nd
In reality whichever one of us gets a SH scalp is the one that will get 4th

I think the 4th placed bit is a bit overated - The only team you need to avoid in the RWC is Samoa. If every team p;lays to the best of their ability none of us will get 4th place

Re: IRB World Rankings ... Part 1
Irl v SA result could be interesting. Any win by Ireland will move them up one to sixth and leave Argentina where they are. A win by SA consolidates their position and Ireland rooted in 8th.

Looking forward to the Ireland game, they seem to play well against the Saffers.

Mentally, Ireland are starting the game 60-0.
Another poor loss today and they'll be lucky to retain second seed ranking.

Re: IRB World Rankings ... Part 1
France are 23-6 up against the Aussies. I presume that if it stays like that France will go above England and Australia will possibly drop below South Africa?
