Re: Top 10 Middle Order Batsmen Of All-Time
I give more weight to batsmen who score well 1) on the road, 2) against stronger opposition, 3) on pitches of varying nature, and 4) in difficult weather conditions, 5) scoring when most of your team batsmen have failed, and 6) in high pressure situations (4th inning of match to save).
Not that ABD passes all the above with flying colours.
I can recall only two or three occasions when Bell has scored well in difficult circumstances. Mostly he has accumulated runs when a few others ahead of him had already scored centuries.
I don't mean to berate Bell. He is a classy player whose batting is beautiful watch. He makes it look easy when in form. As for the above comment about scoring when others have also scored, I hope he will make me eat my words. But, those are my thoughts about him at this stage of his career.

My point exactly. AB has played the match winning knocks when others around him have failed. He scored a brilliant 176 vs England at Headingly, which all but won the series for them in 2008.Leff wrote:I give more weight to batsmen who score well 1) on the road, 2) against stronger opposition, 3) on pitches of varying nature, and 4) in difficult weather conditions, 5) scoring when most of your team batsmen have failed, and 6) in high pressure situations (4th inning of match to save).

Then he scored that brilliant 100 in Perth when SA chased down 400 vs Australia.
Bell often dips his bread after others have done the hard work. His poor record at 3 shows this, until he flogged the hapless Indians around for scores of 159 and 235. The attack in those innings wouldn't even to classified as village green standard.

Dizzy could have flogged this Indian attack.
