Just looks kind of French but maybe it's bonafide I don't know...

It's the plural of mercy, as far as I know. I googled it and it was recognised, so if it's an error, I am not the only one to make it. I probably used it out of context, though!

I can't remember having had cause to use it and it seemed to look funny written down...

I'm sure it's probably right....
