Re: Have you played with anybody famous?????
Are we talking celeb famous or golfer famous.
If were saying Celeb famous the nearest I can count to thatis Alan Brasil in a charity event couple years back.
If were talking Golfer famous, Matt Haines, Phil Archer, Ben Barham, Paul Way and a couple more, but the most famous would be 3 holes with Sir Nick Faldo as a 15 year old junior playing in the Faldo series when he held a golf clinic with us

If that was in the same 4 ball that'd make interesting conversation.

Unfortunately it wasn't at the same time.
I played with Nick Price in 1994 at RSG, a couple of weeks before he won at Turnberry. It was the most amazing display of ball striking I have ever seen.
I played with Steve Redgrave a few years back in one of his charity days. My old company payed a fortune for me and a couple of colleagues to play with the man himself.
I played with Barry McGuigan around 4 years ago at Broome Park in Kent, where he is/was a member.

Major James Hewitt was in the same tournament as me whilst I was holidaying in the Costa Del Golf a few years back. Had a chat with him on the practice green and at the tee box. He won.... bandit.

I know he was a member there, but I have no idea if he still is. I'm sure if you stalk him for long enough you'll get a game with him.
Broome Park is a decent course. It doesn't drain very well in the winter, and the greens could be better, but it does have some really good holes. The par 5 18th is a really enjoyable risk/reward finishing hole.

One guy I played with at St.Andrews in a medal had once made up a fourball containing Bill Clinton. While I've also heard of a guy who turned down taking out a man and wife who turned out to be Michael Douglas and Catherine zeta Jones.
Personally the most 'famous' person I've played with Stuart Wilson, ex walker cup, silver medal and amateur champion.

Played with Frankie Dettori a few years back in Abu Dhabi - not a bad golfer and a great laugh. I knew him from doing some work on the radio for Dubai Racing Club and he kindly agreed to play a round for a charity auction our golf society held

Re: Have you played with anybody famous?????
Played with Richie Ramsey at West Linton in a competition back in 2003 (which was won by the above-mentioned Stuart Wilson); had never heard of him at the time and thought he was bang average. The next year he won shedloads of titles in Scotland then went on to win the us amateur so it shows how much I knew!
Also played with ex-motherwell midfielder Jamie Dolan a couple of times in county comps (he was a member at Shotts GC) before he tragically died of a heart attack while out running aged only 39. 1 of a number of the Motherwell cup-winning team who died young (Davie Cooper, Phil O'Donnell, Paul McGrillen); he was a top guy actually, very down to earth.

Ralph....That's quite spooky with the Motherwell players when you think about it.
Gary Player once waved our match through and played the hole up with us. Does that count?
Played with Celtic 1967 goalie Ronnie Simpson who played off 2 then.
A couple of Ryder Cuppers and quite a few Scottish amateur/pro champions.
Ladies Tour developer Vivien Saunders
Barry Mason who wrote Deliela's lyrics
Bob Anderson [Darts]

Played with Ron Noades (football club manager and owner, I think) when I was a member at one of his golf clubs (Westerham in Kent). Also played in the same charity event, but not with, Karl Howman (Brush Strokes) and Gareth Hale (Hale & Pace). Was suitably underwhelmed each time

Re: Have you played with anybody famous?????
Doon could be the only one on here who is likely to recognise this name. I once played in an exhibition match at St. Andrews with Laura Baugh in 1972. I think she was at that time the youngest ever american Curtis Cup team member which took place at Western Gailes that year. The team made the pilgrimage to the Old Course and dem wot knew one end of a club from t'other were drafted to show them around. It was the only time in my life I'd ever been asked for my autograph although I rather think that had more to do with the coincidence of me wearing the same colour of trousers as the americans than my golfing ability!
Laura has crammed a lot into her life including alcolholism and seven children! She was offered an academic scholarship to Stanford but turned it down because it didn't have a golf team. Turn pro and I think that's when the problems with alcohol began. She recovered and since then has amongst other things dabbled in golf commentary.

In all honesty, is playing golf with a celeb "all that" as LP says suitably underwhelmed each time.
Playing with Alan Brasil, former international footballer and now Talksport presenter, can't say I found that round all that interesting.
The rounds i'ev played with Tour players totally different seeing how they work the ball and make the game so easy then I was in awe.
I know my brother has played with several footballers and tv personalities through his company golf days and not once have I heard him say any of them were interesting

Re: Have you played with anybody famous?????
Not played with anybody famous, but followed several groups in a celebrity pro-am at Bowood about 14 years ago. Nigel Mansell - top bloke, loads of banter with the people who followed his group. Jasper Carrott - nice guy - took his golf seriously (looked a bit nervous), but between shots came out with some good one liners. Jimmy Tarbuck - thoroughly miserable, a lard-arse who thought he was Tiger Woods.
Sometimes get to play my course with a lad who played The Open in 2009, has played Challenge Tour and a few European Tour Events. Not famous, but I do find it fascinating to see how the course should be played! Try to pick up a few tips on the way round too.

Surprised she had time to play golf with seven children. Now that's a lack of discipline. ,although perhaps a very good reason for being a drunk.

I once followed Tiger Woods, Steve Williams, Mark O Meara and his caddy for almost 18 holes in a practise round the week before the British Open
we were the only 5 people on the course and i bumped into them on the second hole on an evening dog walk. Will never forget it.

Gareth if you are getting @rsey that was a pretty pointless reply.
Gail
I remember Laura she was the Michele Wie of her time, very good young player who never fulfilled her potential. A bit like Bobby Cole in the mens game of that era. I played a few practice holes with him once and he was massively long for his frame, same as me at that time 5'10 and less than 10 stone.
I have been asked for my autoghrph a few times only to be met with the boys whispered comment 'Who's he'.

Your contribution to this thread so far is infinitely more pointless than Gael's comment, which incidentally was quite interesting to me, as although I had heard the name before, I wasn't aware of her background story.

I really like Nigel Mansell and find it a real shame people tend to take him less than seriously. He may not have led the playboy lifestyle some fans feel F1 drivers should be he loved motor racing and was just a bit of a geek about it. I would say so what, he loved his sport and gave his all to something all the fans are equally passionate about.
I can imagine he would be great to play a round with for me as I could ask him loads of geeky f1 questions and he would have the patience and interest to answer them.

I'm with gael and Doon regarding Laura Baugh - she was golf's pin up girl, married Bobby Cole and has crammed more into her life than most nominees on here.
I thought the criteria was "fame". She certainly had it, and from my experience following Bobby Cole for 18 holes once, was a pretty nice lady also.
Gareth and s_r are a touch out of order with your comments - ignorance no excuse.

M O Meara was pretty pleasant as was his caddy and SW (surprisingly)
TW was just starting to develop that complex about himself (it was 2003 i think) and he didnt acknowledge me. without any prompting MOM took a ball out of his bag signed it and tossd it over to me on the 18th and said something friendly.

This is getting a bit tenuous! I went to the Open and followed loads of famous people round the golf course... does that count?
Have I played with anyone famous? No. Have played with a few Tour Pro's from Challenge Tour over the years but that doesn't count as famous, especially as none of them have "kicked on" to the main tour. Have seen quite a few famous people (actually mainly sportsmen) while playing golf but not actually played with them.

Although some of the responses may be a bit tenuous, I have to admit I aways enjoy hearing of people's experiences of getting up close with famous players. Especially when their personality away from the spotlight does not entirely match up to their public persona.

Clyde Drexler, HOF basketball player and a 3 handicap with one of the loopiest swings you'll ever see. The only really bad shot he hit was when I asked him what Charles Barkley's swing looked like in person.
Wayne Levi and Sean O'Hair. A long time ago and more recently.
But - I was offered a trip to Latrobe PA to play with the king (4 years ago) and had to turn it down for a work commitment. Bad decision on my part. And, one of my close friends played a round with Jack Nicholson, and his pro v's were personalized "Batman". He said he was a pleasant enough guy, but a bit strange none-the-less.

There was nothing @rsey/snidey intended, the point of the thread was whether you'd play with someone famous, hardly a trait of being an alcoholic or having several children.
However, if Gail or anyone else is/was offended then apologies.

I've played with many of Wales International Rugby Union past players (they regularly holiday in my neck of the woods), Garin Jenkins, Derek Quinnel, Jonathan Davies, Neil Jenkins and many others.
No aires and graces and not great golfers but really top, top blokes. In fact Garin is Captain of one of the local clubs round here.

Re: Have you played with anybody famous?????
20 years ago the company I worked for sponsored the English Open at the Belfry and I won the quali comp to get a place on the pro-am team. Was teamed up with Eamonn Darcy and we had the fortune to go on and win it (-21).
Never thought to get him to sign a card for me at the time but was at the Seniors Open at R.Porthcawl a couple of years ago and saw him finish up the 18th so went and said hello. Mentioned how the Belfry experience was about my greatest golfing day but he didn't remember it at all never mind me. Possibly not quite so high on your memorable days when you've holed the putt to win the Ryder Cup I guess.
Nice guy though didn't ask for swing tips but his caddie was great with all 3 of us in the team at the pro-am.
