First topic message reminder :
just to show how welcoming a bunch we can be, here's a thread for us to welcome new members to the golf section. i found when making my first few posts that it could be a little awkward trying to find my feet with some of the regulars here - so here's an opportunity for you to say hey and get a cuddle in return

Re: new members love-in
Handicap - 13 (really, it WAS lower ... tough year!)
Club - Aronimink
Favorite Course - Merion/Pine Valley, throw a towel over the two
Course I would most like to play but haven't - Cypress Point/Royal Dornoch
Favorite Architect - Donald Ross/William Flynn/Harry Colt
Favorite Player - I like viewing excellence in competition - Woods over the years, McIlroy/Donald this year
Least liked - I honestly don't know any well enough to dislike them.
606 Nemesis - I'm sure I rub a bunch the wrong way!
606 Best Buddy - Never met one ... wait, I MAY have met Kwini and just didnt' know it (Kwin - Did you ever have a drink at Targets on Burrstone Road or the Brewery -- I worked as a bartender at both for a stint)
Favorite Major - US Open over Major Tom by a smidgen
Links or Parkland - For the record, I have never had a bad time on a golf course
Length of time playing - Seriously 12 years

Sr,
Targets? A name from the past. But can't remember exactly where it is/was.
On two occasions I spent months living in the Ramada before it was turned into dorms and the bar there was my BR hang-out!
Otherwise, usually Riley's/Killabrew or Who's On First!

Kwin - Target's was officially in New York Mills, right across from the High School. Killabrew, great place. In my "watering hole" days, I spent a fair amount of time at the Bearded Dolphin (the BD golf league STILL plays every Tuesday at Newport), the Auburn and Prop's Inn.

Sr,
That's what I thought.
A late friend of mine lived his final years at the BD bar (initials SB, you might know him - he of the: "I've made three fortunes in my life. My first wife has one, my second wife has another, my third wife the last." Used to know Newbridge Networks' and Celtic Manor's Terry Matthews a fortune or two ago! Died apparently penniless (tho' one wonders about that) of self-neglect, among other things. A regular companion at the GCofN and Carvallo's.
Utica Rugby Club used to hang out in the Auburn when I played a few games for them, and I stopped going to Props after a female acquaintance was asked to leave for dancing on a table and slowly removing her clothes!!

Yes, I think so. More's the pity. I think they've turned down ex-Presidents and the PGA Tour before so simple wealth doesn't cut it and there's a huge (>10km?) driveway to the course so they can see you coming. They sound a bit stuffy but I'd kill (well, almost) to get a round at CP. The last few holes are legendary, particularly 16/17 I think. Search Google Images for "cypress point golf" for a taster of the terrain.gaelgowfer wrote:NBS ... isn't Cypress Point the one which only a member's invitation will get you onto the course?

The clubhouse is only a couple of hundred yards of 17 mile drive. I know as for a joke I decided when doing the usual tourist drive around 17 mile drive (well the bits i could be arsed with) that I would drive up into the cypress point car park.
When I got to the clubhouse this guy dressed in late 19th century golf gear came running out the clubhouse brandishing a large rifle…..
Not really, I just got to the car park, my girlfriend panicked and started saying we would get chassed so I performed a u turn and drove back down the drive.

Would any girl really follow anyone around to gaze at golf course architecture?
I always feel sorry for the poor girl who gets dragged round the course by her boyfriend.

Super
We were on 17 mile drive because she loves wildlife and wanted to see the birds, sea lions and sea otters. We also saw these awesome beach squirrel things.
I actually have a cool photo of some sea otters bathing at the bottom of the rock which the cypress tree used on the pebble beach logo.
So super what will you be getting your girlfriend for Christmas, just curious as hearing other peoples ideas is good for inspiration.

A girlfriend that follows round to look at sporting venues is a keeper! Whenever we go on holiday, any sign of floodlights i dragged the GF (now wife) to check them out. Meaning random photos outside Belenenses Fc and Pisa Fc. And Trips to the Stadium of light, and recentley a tour of Fenway Park. That sort of GF is a keeper!

This (if it's successful) will be my first post on any electronic message board ever -- I'm not very techy but mr plunky gave me an I-pad for my birthday so here goes! I've lived on long island for the past 22 years since marrying mr plunky (who is American) but i grew up in plymouth,Devon. I love to follow all the news over there and have enjoyed the to and fro on this site for quite a while now. Been playing golf for about 10 years mostly at Bethpage (not the black yet). We cross the pond once a year and always take the clubs with us. Favorite moments are always those spent post-golf, savoring a decent pint in the late summer evening sun watching stragglers coming down the 18th fairway. Oops, feeling a bit homesick now!
Favorite golfer Luke Donald, favorite course port royal Bermuda but never met a golf course I didn't like, least favorite golfer has been tiger ever since I saw him on a practice day at Bethpage us open a few years ago.
Will prob be looking for advice on where to play once we've chosen our destination for the next trip.
P.s. I spell the correct way but my I-pad keeps correcting it so I sound American.

Hi plunky
Would be interested to read a report on the red course at bethpage as it seems a lot of people rate it nearly as highly as the black.
Have you played any of the other long Island biggies like, shinnicock, NGLA, maidstone sebonack etc?
As for advice on a trip back across the pond which area of the country have you not visited which has a golfing reputation?

Bethpage
Hi McLaren !
Have to say we've only played the red once or twice. Bethpage can be very crowded so we tend to go out late afternoon and play 9 holes. Red and green don't come back to the clubhouse after 9 so we stick to blue and yellow (which are challenging enough for me). Some say front 9 of blue is similar to red as it's long and you never seem to be hitting off level ground (or maybe that's just the way I play ?). They're all good, well looked after courses at Bethpage but they're also understandably popular . I personally find them all long from the front tees -- theres something wrong if I'm teeing up just a few feet in front of mr.P on a par 5 !
We will probably visit the Oxford area next year as my niece just started at uni there. We were in the area several years ago and enjoyed kirtlington but any other recommendations would be appreciated. Have to say that each time we've played over the pond we've never had to wait to get out and play, never had an issue with the pace of play, and have always had a great time. On long island we either have too many golfers or too few affordable golf courses -- you guys are lucky.

I often check out the BBC website in my lunch hour at work ( BBC to catch up with news and dailymail to guiltily catch up on gossip), so i found the old forum there some time ago and followed it here. I don't really have much interest in any sport other than golf. There's a discussion board on the website of the US golf channel over here but it seems to attract people who have a talent for bringing tiger woods into every single thread. I've enjoyed the variety of topics here !
P.S. Don't want to offend anyone re tiger -- he's an amazing golfer but he doesnt need to be in every discussion !

keizo is our resident weirdo so dont worry about upsetting him. I honestly dont know how to read the bloke. He seems nice enough if a little unbalanced.

Re: new members love-in
Sorry, last post was a bit abrupt. Just had time to put the template together before taking my wife to church. Not a normal event on a Sunday morning because I would normally be on the golf course. Today however is Carol Sunday so we don't tend to play but start the festive season with a few carols accompanied by a brass "ensemble" and a convivial Xmas lunch to follow!!

'Threeoffthe tee' Great to hear that your club is still going strong. It is the first club I ever stepped foot on,illegally I have to add.In the 1950's I lived at 52 Kelvington road which forms the eastern boundary of your course and our back garden backed onto the course. From the age of 7 or 8 my pals and I would hop over the brick wall to play on and around the edges of the links not having a clue on what was going on with all these guys hitting balls everywhere. It was great fun for us to lay in wait on the slope of grass and dare each other to dash out and pinch the ball and run like hell.! Oddly enough we never ever thought to find out more of what the game was, allwe really wanted to do was open the balls up with our pen-knives and disebowel them, great fun in those days of 1.62 balls getting the cover off the cutting and stripping the yards and yards of wound rubber to expose a little sac of rubber.Great fun

i'm quite partial to a toblerone myself, but a big bag of giant buttons can also be dangerous to have around the house.
