Alot of the time thats true however i did my zoology thesis on capuchin monkeys at in a zoo, i was studying the behaviour patterns and social interactions of the group.....basically the alpha male monkey was this tiny nuts wee monkey, he was partially blind in one eye, had half a tail and covered in scars....but was totally mental, any grief from the larger male monkeys and he'd take them down monkey style.

So in the animal kingdom while alpha males are usually the biggest, sometimes it aint the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog. (change dog to monkey where applicable)

sirtidychris, although I have not done a thesis on the subject, I watched the movie instinct and in the wild it is a different story.

Zoo animals tend to lose their spirit and react mostly different than those in the wild.

I just need to look at my mates here in SA when we have a golfing weekend or biking recce. When the Alpha females (our wives) aren't around we are all alpha males.

So are we saying that Harry Ellis might have been a gay monkey ?

To me, often the most effective rugby players look the least likely of physical specimens. If you see a player without a neck and arms the size of most people´s legs, that player is often one-dimensional at best.

Players like George Gregan or Conrad Smith wouldn't make the cover of Men's Health but they sure tackled like they were roid abusers. In life, often a really ripped guy is making up for some deficiency in his general life. These atrocious infomercials with guys screaming in a high pitched voice, let´s work on your abs, usually make you retort, no, let´s work on your personality. I go to the gym so I can drink and eat whatever I like.

I was thinking about this actually. McCaw, Read, Kaino are all amazingly athletic but they are no gym monkeys. Yet they are such good players, and don't overdo the whole size thing. Totally agree with you.

Bulk that hampers mobility and agility is useless to a rugby player.

But yeah definitely Haskell is probably the most well-built rugby player in the world. However, I think he focused far too much on the gym in his early career, and that is why his rugby playing suffered. Lately, he has probably focused more on his game, as the size is now already there, and that is probably why he has been playing much better.
