On Overseas Players
In the Amateur Era players only had one choice if they wished to use there talents to earn a living Rugby League.
To use the phrase Going North, when we got into the Professional era Union players, usually near the end of there
Careers.Came North or to Japan for cash, more recently players in there prime are moving for cash including more
and more League players.
Clubs in the Uk are moaning about the salary Cap and being unable to compete with the Top14.Whose League is
manned almost half are Non-France Qualified. Now UK based players are going to the French Clubs for cash there
is talk of Non-Selection by England and Wales in this case.
Sanzar until PDV in 2008,did`nt pick overseas based players,SA did so since then with poor results, the Pace
of the game being different. Also any player outside the main training camp would be unfamiliar with tactics etc.
Nz and Australia flatly refuse to do it,the rush would be such that ALL Test teams would be picked from abroad.
One cannot blame a Player for making the most of his talents,a playing career seldom lastes more than a decade
at best.
It will be interesting if the New Bok Coach does so,it seems unlikely now, what are thoughts about picking them
England/Wales especially.
In NZ there is a line in the ground, cash or a possible Test Career you can`t have both, same with OZ.
Usually players come for 3 reasons, established ones a pension,Unestablished ones unable to get game time
or 3 just chasing the Cash a`la SBW.
Thoughts anyone?

Re: On Overseas Players
Alan I think SBW was all 3 reasons...
SA have been ok so far in that theyve players like Steyne back and in 2011 it worked (in 2010 it didnt). Though even with Steyn I think it was this stubbornness of relying on the 2007 formula and players wherever possible.
If that works why not? Oz brought Vickerman back didnt they?
NZ has a unique position because its side is based on the sxv standards and can afford to be strict on the matter. As a rule, our players dont get 'better' than they were here even though thats largely untested. Its an assumption we make, or at least prefer to make using anecdotal evidence- McAlister being the primary test case.
Do whats best to produce the best team I say. Picking overseas palyers makes the management of that so much harder and SA have enough problems to add that in the mix.

Scotland would be happy to accept any players looking to move abroad.

Frankly I am getting fed up of critique of my Prose style.I am here to debate Rugby no English Language which I hold certificates at both GCE and CSE also
English Lit.
My knowledge of Rugby is pretty profound,so you have a choice read my
thoughts or not YOUR choice.!!
